Prayers and Support Needed for the Peery Family

The loss of a loved one is one of the most trying things that can ever happen in life. When it is a child that is in the prime of their life the sadness is compounded.

On July 15th local Warrior Driver Jim Peery lost his 15 year old son Zach in a tragic drowning accident in Lake Missaukee in Lake City.

(Lake City High School Principal and varsity football coach Tim Peterson said he knew Peery as a student but more as an athlete as he was a three-sport star and ready to spend his first year on the varsity football team this fall.

"He was truly an amazing kid. He was so well-liked, so polite and such a competitor," Peterson said. "I’m having a hard time with this. It really questions your faith when something like this happens.")

Accident Report

It is my understanding Donations to help the Peery Family will be taken at Winston Speedway on Friday and Thunderbird Raceway on Saturday.

Losing your temper: Who could be the loser and Who should be the loser?

The past two weeks has seen a couple of local race car drivers lose their tempers and lose the respect of many fans. While racing is one of the most adrenaline rushed passionate things you will ever do, the harm that can be caused in an instant can be irreversible.

To be paid $50 a night as a corner worker is not worth what could have happened Saturday night at Thunderbird Raceway. Regardless of racing incidents, the past history between drivers it is inexcusable for a driver to put an innocent bystander at risk.

Watch the video below as the #27 of Eric Spangler uses his car to take out his frustrations on #34 as he is being assisted by a track official.

A couple years ago I reported on a death that occured in the pit area of a track down south. A top late model driver was working under his car when a disgruntled driver left his race event after arguing with officials over a call. The driver sped in the pits and collided with the stationary car knocking it off its jack stands and killing the innocent driver who never saw him coming.

For those drivers who think winning at the local track is a life and death situation, they could be right.

Crystal Motor Speedway Storyline July 10th

July 10th 2010 Results!

Another night of great racing was put into the books Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway Saturday night on a beautiful summer evening. All six divisions were on hand and the night was sponsored by Family Electronics of Alma.

The night got rolling with the Engine Pro IMCA Modifieds. On the first lap, Chad Wernette jumped out to an early lead while points leader Bowen blew a motor coming down the back stretch of the first lap, ending his night. Brad Roberts moved up to second with AJ Ward and Flinn III following. Most of the race was all Wernette and he went on to win over Roberts, Ward, Josh Borton, Joe Fowler, Brody Bowser, Roger Flinn III, Melvin Allen, Greg Wiles, and Chad Burke. Borton took the B Main with heat gold going to Bowser, Buzz Lawrence, and Ward

The Kentucky Fried Chicken sponsored Late Model feature got off to a rough start with two major accidents, highlighted by Justin McNeil ending up on his roof in turn one. Brock Cogswell was also involved in that incident and was shook up but both were unhurt. Kurt Mesman led most of the early race but had to battle Tom Dusen nearly every turn. Dusen finally got a good run on Mesman and was able to get under him to take the lead. Ryan VanderVeen rolled to second leaving Mesman to fight with Matt Pickard for third. Mark Andersen began to push for position and Dean Huizenga came on hard with a strong run at the end. Dusen went on to win VanderVeen, Huizenga, Pickard, Andersen, Mesman, Bill Beardslee, Mickey Carman, Jr., Liz Patterson, and CJ Reisbig. Carman won the B Main and heat wins went to Mesman, Reisbig, and Rusty Seaver.

The Smokers Club of Mt Pleasant Street stocks saw the top three points leaders rise to the top again and take the top three positions. Mike Vandermark Jr. took the lead about lap seven of the event with Jasen Wiley and Kyle Prochazka tight behind. With three to go, Kyle Thomas was about to be lapped and he spun right in front of the leaders. Vandermark managed to avoid him completely and Wiley just brushed him but was able to continue. Vandermark won, followed by Wiley, Prochazka, George Wease, Robert Town, Brook Ann Brasington, Mike Chlebek, Luke Sickles, Tim Buskirk, and Al Kiester. Roger Stewart won the B Main while heat wins went to Vandermark and Kevin Rohn.

Cory Burch grabbed the early lead in the Races On The Web 24/7 Flinn Stock division but Richard Melton came charging forward and began to push him for the lead. Chance Allen and Lee Zahm followed in a hard battle for third. A continuous dog fight ensued right to the end as Burch, Allen and Melton came nose to tail right down to the checker with Burch winning over Melton, Zahm, Allen, Austin Bean, Ryan Paradise, Chris DeCamp, Neil Zeigler, Melton, Matt Kammers, and Taylor Daniels.

Rick Edmister was the early leader of the Port City Racing Pro Stock event with Jake Headley tight behind. Edmister was running a good line but ended up spinning and handing the lead to Headley. Brian Craigmyle picked up second and began to challenge Headley but Chaney Newland had worked his way forward and began to work over the front two cars. Newland slipped under both of them and took the lead and began to pull away. Ryan Kent also began to work forward and with just a few laps to go, he was running third. Newland went on to win over Ryan Kent, Barry Rinard, Headley Rodney Heikkila, Todd Bush, Jimmy Hale, Jr., Doug McKeown, Sr., Scott Bouck, and Bret Hollenbeck. Rinard and Edmister took heat wins.

The Port City Racing Pro Truck feature was the last event of the night and Dave Peters jumped out to a comfortable lead. He was followed by Gaven Parks, Carl Thayer, and Nate Jones. Thayer finally edged out Parks for second and with five laps to go, Thayer slid under Peters for the lead. A last lap caution bunch the field and when the green fell, Thayer jumped out front once again to win over Verhaar, Parks, Peters, Tim Sooy, Ashlee Scott, Tim Wood, Scott Nieman, Jones, and Gary Dancer. Peters won the heat race.

Next week at Crystal Motor Speedway, the SOD Sprints return to the Crystal clay for their second visit of the 2010 season and this time it will be their mid season championships, sponsored by Papa’s Tackle Box and Crystal Dragon Fly. Late Models have the night off. Gates open at 4:30 PM with racing starting about 7:30 PM. Adult admission to the grandstands is $12 and kids 5-11 are $4. Pit passes are $25. AMA Flat Track Series points leader Joe Kopp dominates at I-96 Speedway

AMA Flat Track Series points leader Joe Kopp dominates at I-96 Speedway

The Grand Rapids Press

LAKE ODESSA -- Joe Kopp of Mica, Wash., won Saturday night’s 25-lap AMA Pro Grand National Flat Track Series race at I-96 Speedway before a crowd of 4,000.

It was the 21st career victory for Kopp, the series points leader, and he led from start to finish after earning the hole shot. He outdueled Jake Johnson of Franklinville, N.J., by 0.215 seconds.

Jeffrey Carver Jr. of Alton, Ill., led all 12 laps to win Saturday’s Pro Singles main event. Brad Baker of Chehalis, Wash., earned the hole shot, but Carver grabbed the lead before the field got back to the stripe.

Heat winners were James Rispoli, Carver, Kopp, Kenny Coolbeth Jr., Jethro Halbert and Zack Palmer. Coolbeth also won the dash for cash.

Consolation race winners were Brian Smith and Brad Baker.

Meeuwsen Grabs Late Model Win at Berlin

Ross Meeuwsen grabs his first Late Model win of the season at Berlin Raceway

Steve Ungrey
The Grand Rapids Press

MARNE -- Ross Meeuwsen has a message for those ahead of him in Berlin Raceway's Late Model points standings.

It might be only two people, but the message is clear: He isn’t going anywhere.

“We weren’t getting it done at the beginning of the year, so hopefully, we’re back right now,” Meeuwsen said. “The car didn’t seem like it had enough power at the beginning of the year and it does now. We put a different motor in it and things have been different.”

Meeuwsen took over the lead from Tim DeVos on lap 70 after leader Nick Szotko and Billy Shotko tangled up on the front stretch midway through the race.

His lead grew to 7 seconds before two caution flags in the final seven laps brought him back to the pack.

RACING AT BERLIN
Winners: Jim Rhodes (4-Cylinder B), Cole Roelofs (4-Cylinder A), Weston Jewett (Pro Stock), Ross Meeuwsen (Late Model)

Key moment: Passing his competition in the 4-Cylinder B 20-lapper, Rhodes grabbed the lead and held it for the 19 remaining laps en route to his second feature win in three years of racing.

On track: Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital night is next Saturday, with a 50-lap Super Stock race highlighting a program that includes 40 laps of Modifieds, 30 laps of Pro Stocks and 15 of Young Guns. School bus races also are on the schedule.
Still, Meeuwsen finished nearly 3.8 seconds ahead of runner-up Barry Hartwell and 4.2 seconds ahead of third-place finisher Terry Senneker.

“I kept looking at the scoreboard and saw Senneker coming at me, and on the last caution Terry’s car sort of gave all she had,” Meeuwsen said.

Meeuwsen is in his seventh season in the Late Model division. He has had the most success the past two years.

After finishing 10th in points and winning Late Model Rookie of the Year in 2004, he advanced to eighth in 2005 before falling back to 11th in 2006 and 16th in 2007.

In 2008 and 2009, Meeuwsen finished in the top five 22 times and won five races on the way to two Late Model titles.

After Saturday, a third title might be on the horizon.

“It’s going to be tough, but we won’t give up,” Meeuwsen said.

He finished third May 15 in the first Late Model race of the year, followed by another third-place finish May 29. Two other Late Model races were rained out.

His biggest rivals this year have been Terry VanHaitsma and DeVos. VanHaitsma held a 73-point lead on DeVos and a 77-point lead on Meeuwsen going into Saturday’s events. Final point standings aren’t verified until early in the week, but Meeuwsen might have enough to pull into second.

“We’re going to stay with the basics, try to do some different things," Meeuwsen said. "We’ve got last year’s motor in there now and it runs smoother. It has a bit more power off the corners. We were getting beaten on restarts and now we’ve got traction.”

Rhodes, Roelofs, Jewett, and Meeuwsen all winners at the Pepsi Summer Spectacular

Marne, MI- It was another great night at the Berlin Raceway. The Pepsi Summer Spectacular treated fans to a fun night of racing! The Coors Late Models were in action with a 100 lap feature. The Burnips 4-Cylinders and the Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks also took the track, giving the fans an exciting night at the track.

First up for the feature races was the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder B class. Paul Ritchie in the #63 and #40 Charlie DeJong started on the front line. Jim Rhodes in the #T11 was out to a quick start. Rhodes had a comfortable lead, throughout the 20 lap feature. The real battle was for second, the #20 car of Tyler Nawrocki, last week’s feature winner, and the #110 of Dan Dells were battling hard. Dells and Nawrocki were bumper to bumper for the better part of the feature. Nawrocki would finally pass Dells during lap 16. With only 4 laps left, Nawrocki wouldn’t have enough time to make a move on the leader Rhodes, who was comfortably ahead of the pack. Jared Lyzenga in the #77, Dells, #20 Jackson Walker, DeJong, #84 Steve Thompson, #07 Clayton Brown, Ritchie, #65a Andy Church rounded out the top ten.

Next for the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinders was the A feature. Starting on the start/finish line were the #2 car of Darrell Holtzlander and #01 Rob Shoemaker. From the start the #100 of Jason Scheid made a move to the front trying to overtake Holtzlander who was in the lead, but lap 3 saw the first caution of the night, as Shoemaker hit the wall near turn 3. Scheid was sent to the back of the lineup as he was cited for rough driving. Out of the restart the Holtzlander, #024 Cole Roelofs, and #7 Ryan Hamm were the top three. From the restart, all three were fighting hard, Hamm would pass Holtzlander on the outside coming out of turn 3. Holtzlander would keep falling to the back of the lineup as #17 Kyle Hamm moved into third. The pass would set up a thrilling three car race for first. Roelofs, Kyle and Ryan Hamm were literally neck and neck until the end of the race. A three wide finish saw Roelofs win by .009 of a second. Kyle Hamm, Ryan Hamm, #47 Don McNabb, #100 Jason Scheid, #354 Chris McKinley, #51 Brad Hastings, #8 Frank Bisacky, #15 Mel Parsons, and #111 Josh Bisacky would all finish in the top ten.

The Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks were in action next. On front row were #36 Ken Smith Jr. and #33 Allen Davis. Smith took the quick lead, but the three time feature winner #51 Weston Jewett was quickly making his way to the front. Jewett’s pursuit for first was halted in lap 8 as #6 Brandon Hermiller and #F1 Randy Veldman slid off the backstretch. Out of the restart Smith, #76 Brian Tillema, and Jewett were leading, Tillema was right on Smith as this had clearly become a three car fight. Jewett made his way into second as he passed Tillema on the outside going into turn 2. Another caution would come out in lap 18, the #22 Darin Niemi spun. The yellow would not slow down the three car battle of Smith, Jewett, and Tillema. Tillema passed both and moved to the front coming out of the yellow, but just as he was getting comfortable in the lead, Jewett passed him with two laps to go. Jewett would never look back and took the checker flag for the fourth time this season. Tillema, Hermiller, Smith, #76 Ryan Gruppen, Davis, #18 Randy Meppelink, #20 Dave Hull, #88 Tony Davis, and #7 Kevin DeGood finished in the top ten.

The final event of the night was the Coors Late Model 100 lap feature. On the starting line were Nick Szotko in the #19 and #22 Josh Slade. Szotko emerged as the leader early. With Szotko so far ahead, the battle for second was the thrilling one, Joe Bush in the #61 and #55 Chris Anthony were riding each other hard. After a few laps of bumper to bumper action, Anthony began to fade and Tim DeVos in the #12 over took him for third. Steve Needles in the #14 who started in the eleventh spot, had moved into sixth by lap 9. Szotko and DeVos both had a comfortable lead, the only thing that slowed Szotko was the caution on lap 38. Billy Shotko in the #222 and Szotko had an incident on the front stretch; this would cause Szotko to pit on lap 42 and allowing DeVos to take over first. Out of the caution, the #32 of Ross Meeuwsen began to make his way to the front. On lap 70 Meeuwsen passed DeVos and over took him for first. Meeuwsen wouldn’t be threatened the remainder of the race and took the checker with a 3.778 lead. Barry Hartwell in the #1, #37 Terry Senneker, #21 Terry VanHaitsma, #12 Tim DeVos finished in the top 5.
