Fourth of July Weekend Brings Two New Winners To The Lane Automotive Michigan Traditional Sprints
By Trevor Hollis
Some of the best non wing sprint car drives in the area helped celebrate the birth of our great nation with racing action over the weekend. On Saturday, the Lane Automotive Michigan Traditional Sprints invaded the Crystal Motor Speedway on Saturday and with them came the non-wing debut of Grand Ledge native Dustin Daggett. The all time win leader in Sprints On Dirt history sure didn't look like he'd never raced with out a wing on the car as he was lightning fast right out of the box. 24 sprint cars representing 3 states and canada were on hand to put on a fantastic show for the fans. With 21 cars in the feature event problems were bound to happen. A couple of early spins kept the field tight but Daggett was able to pick up a couple of early positions and put him in a good position to pick up the win. The first major incident of the night involved the canadian invader of John Watson. Watson drove the car a little bit too hard into turn number one and the car was greeted by the crystal front stretch wall. Watson's car bounced off the wall putting all 4 wheels in the air before rolling a couple of times and eventually coming to a stop well off the racing surface. John was ok. A couple of laps later the number 8 of Tim Champlin got upside down as well in turn one in a violent wreck in turn one as well. Tim was also Ok. With all of this happening Dustin Daggett was able to get a good handle on the car, and eventually take over the top spot. When the final flag fell it was Daggett out front with Greg Dallmann second, Indiana native Donald Smith third, fourth went to the 1h of Kevin Hawk, and rounding out the top five was the 7 of Nic Rogers. Heat race wins went to Keith Love, Dustin Daggett, and Joe Bares.
The very next night the sprints took the the bullring that is cherry raceway up in Fife Lake. The 17 drivers that checked into the pits for this one were all a little bit concerned about the rough track but they all went right to work finding a set up that would allow them the best chance of picking up a feature win. As the 25 lap feature rolled out it was Donald Smith that was the one to beat. It only took smith a couple of laps to make his way to the front and around Mike Austraukus to take the lead. Once out front Smith was walking away with the feature until he hit lap traffic and the 5k of Randy Kreple. Kreple lost the back end of the car and went around right in front of the leader forcing smith to take evasive action and ultimately blowing a tire on the 61X. That handed the lead over to the hometown man Joe Bares who never looked back. Bares was able to hold off a charge from Ohio's Chad Wilson, Mike Austraukus, Chuck Wilson, and rounding out the top five Nick Landon.
The Lane Automotive Michigan traditional sprints will be back in action on Sunday July 10th as part of the co sanctioned event at the Millstream speedway as part of the road to the Hewitt classic. Please check out www.mtsprints .com for all of your scheduling questions and we will see you at the track.

18-year-old Middleville driver continues winning ways at Berlin Raceway
By Steve Ungrey | The Grand Rapids Press MLive.com
MARNE — He wasn’t around at the start of the season, but Jordan Dahlke is making up for lost time.
The Middleville resident has gotten hot in recent weeks, and the hot streak continued Saturday night when he captured his second victory in four weeks at the 50-lap USA Modified feature at Berlin Raceway.
Dahlke, an 18-year-old who is the third in his family to race cars, hasn’t been concerned about his standing in the points race, even after capturing his second race of the year. He entered this week’s races in 11th.
“I’ve started to do pretty well within the last month,” Dahlke said. “I really haven’t been following the point standings because I haven’t been around all year. I didn’t run the car at the start of the season and, then, I decided to come back and start racing every week again.”
Dahlke won his first Modifieds race of the year on June 11,when he beat Billy Eppink by 1.7 seconds for the checkered flag. On Saturday, Dave Lake was behind him by a half-second, while Brian Bergakker and Eppink were less than 1.5 seconds behind.
Dahlke took fifth in last year’s point standings, while Bergakker
won the championship. When Dahlke didn’t start the season, car owner Mark Flairman began racing both his No. 44 car and Dahlke’s No. 99.
Larry Dahlke Sr., Jordan’s grandfather, started racing in 1954 and retired in 1982.
Jordan’s father, Larry Dahlke Jr., started with dirt bikes in 1977 before moving to stock cars in 1980.
Like his father, Jordan pursued dirt bikes to start. He began at 8 years old before moving over to stock cars when he was 14, as an accident at age 13 involving his dirt bike resulted in two broken arms and a full-time switch to racing cars.
“I really look up to the both of them,” Jordan said. “When I got hurt, my dad built me a car, and I started racing cars full time. I used to grow up watching him race and, then, he actually quit racing when I was 12 to start watching me race for a while. Ever since the dirtbike accident, I’ve been racing cars and I can’t complain.”
On just his third night in a car and during the 2005 season, Dahlke won a heat race at Kalamazoo Speedway. The next year, he finished third in the Pure Stocks point class and won a feature en route to Rookie of the Year status. Dahlke graduated to Outlaw Late Models in 2007 and finished 10th in the standings at Kalamazoo, but won that class’s Rookie of the Year designation.
When Dahlke moved to ASA Late Models in 2008, he picked up two top 10 finishes in seven races. He then raced a few times in 2009 before coming to Berlin for the modifieds.
Dahlke survived repeated caution flags in the second half of the race, eventually taking the lead on lap 38 when Billy Shotko stalled on the front stretch. Dahlke was the last of several leaders during the feature, as Brian Bergakker, Shotko and Ryan Hamm took turns leading during the first two-thirds of the event.
“You just have to learn to ride with the yellow flags and just try your hardest to do well,” Jordan said.
The buzz
Winners: Jackson Walker (4-cylinder B), Jason Scheid (4-cylinder A), Jordan Dahlke (USA Modifieds), Lou Caposey (VROA), Terry VanHaitsma (Late Model), Brian Tillema (Pro Stock)
First-time award: Terry VanHaitsma may be a veteran driver, but the Hudsonville resident hasn’t crossed the finish line in first place yet this season. That changed Saturday when VanHaitsma outlasted Steve Needles and Terry Senneker to take the 60-lap Late Model event.
Surprise, surprise: There were two green-white-checkered finishes during the six races. Jordan Dahlke held on to top a fast-charging Dave Lake during the USA Modified, while Lou Caposey came off the single-file restart and held on in the last two laps to beat Samantha Jansen in the Vintage Racing feature.
Next week: The ARCA racing series brings its popular event to Berlin, along with the Vintage Racing Organization of America and the Premier Boyne Machine Super Lates. Tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the gate.

Destruction, Fireworks, and More Highlight I-96 Speedway's Fourth of July Holiday Celebration
Lake Odessa, Michigan (Saturday, July, 2nd, 2011): The Fourth of July Holiday Weekend Celebration was going on at I-96 Speedway on Saturday, July 2nd as the Lake Odessa, Michigan speed plant celebrated our great nations 235th birthday with a full night of carnage and mayhem as Brand Name Drugs of Grand Rapids, Michigan presented the Fourth of July Holiday Night of Destruction. A wild night of pure excitement and constant action thrilled the massive crowd on hand and the night ended with a HUGE Fireworks display.
The Hudsonville, Michigan based West Michigan Off-Road Derby (WMOR) was on hand featuring cars navigating throughout the grounds utilizing both the 1/2 mile and 3/8s mile as well as jumps and other obstacles constructed throughout the infield for this very special event. 42 entries were on the grounds and after all was said and done, Nick Vliestra took the checkered flag ahead of Mitch Zeerip, Ken Nauta, Brandon Oliver, and Jeff Piccard the top five. Heat Race Winners were; Jason Steele, Piccard, Vlietstra, Katie Steele, and Nauta while Last Chance Races went to Don Oxford, Zeerip, and Mark Spetoskey.
Other destruction events featured a School Bus Race around the 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked dirt oval and after a very entertaining event that went 10 laps, it would be Chief Tech Inspector Chris Beckhorn taking the win over Jeremiah Kirby, Tim Kirby, Phil Traver, and Matt Prieur the top five. Tim Kirby was the winner of the Heat Race.
Spectator Drags were also a part of the action as fans in the grandstands were able to take their personal vehicles out onto the 3/8s mile dirt and go against each other one on one for one lap. The winner moves on, the loser heads back to the parking lot. In all, 13 competitors took the challenge with Jeremiah Kirby in his Cummins Diesel truck taking the win over Tyler Quillan in his Chevrolet Pick-Up Truck. Earlier in the night, a Jay Scott in a GMC Pick-Up truck went over the top of turn four and barrel rolled several times. He was ok but the truck was completely destroyed.
Then the Busses returned and took part in the first ever School Bus Demolition Derby, when that was over, it would be Chris Beckhorn taking his second win of the night. The very special Gauntlet race wrapped up the Destruction portion of the night as the "Gauntlet" in this case a Van had to fight off two other "attackers" who are trying to tip the "Gauntlet" over by any means necessary. In the end, Co-Promoter Mike Mouch and Driver Gary Bowerman, who were in the "Gauntlet" Nick Vlietstra and Brandon Oliver were able to tip over the Van with Mouch and Bowerman in it thus winning the Gauntlet race.
