Mike Garvey Takes the Bounty on Grand American Race Cars

Feuds Were the Theme of the Night as Battles On the Track Highlight Blizzard Series

51 Sports/Blizzard Series PR

Five Flags Speedway put down an extra $513 dollars for a driver who could win the race and stop chassis manufacturer Grand American Race Cars’ dominance at the Pensacola, Florida track in the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard Series. What followed was an amazing race with lots to talk about as Mike Garvey beat TJ Reaid & David Rogers on the race’s final restart to win the Papa John's 100 the $513 bonus when he drove his Port City Chassis to victory lane.

"It's an awesome feeling," said Garvey. "We worked out this deal with Harley Boeve from Port City Race Cars and these things are getting better and better each week. We could sit there and bide time and then pick it up and pass people when we wanted too. The car is great and we are going to keep working on it and see if we can get that (Snowball) Derby this year."

The $513 bonus was added for the Papa John’s 100 to see if any driver could be the first non-GARC chassis to win a Blizzard Series race at the track since 2009, a span of 13 races.

Garvey, like some others, had some minor obstacles to overcome. In the middle part of the race, he and Reiad had a paint-swapping affair that settled down allowing them to run one-two.

"I never touched him," laughed Garvey. "I guess I was hitting him with my rear bumper. It was a little aggravating, but we were able to drive away."

Reaid made one last bid to keep up the GARC domination with his Bill Elliott Racing No. 51, but came up just a few laps short of catching Garvey.

"We were really good tonight and this place is all about surviving attrition," said Reaid. "We have some work to do as the right rear was gone at the end. Garvey doored me a little bit and I wanted to let him know I was not happy about it. All in all we are not here to tear up race cars. We both got good finishes and some others didn't."

Most of the race was lead by Augie Grill or Casey Smith, who both put on a show for the fans in attendance as they traded the lead swapped paint for the top spot for two-thirds of the race. Both ended up having flat tires, but Smith made it back to sixth while Grill ended up 17th.

Behind the top three, Bubba Pollard came home fourth after setting fast time and held off Fort Kent, Maine driver Austin Threiault. The rest of the top 10 was made up of Smith, Donnie Wilson, Josh Hamner, Dennis Schoenfeld and Chris Davidson.

The most serious altercation involved DJ VanderLey, who was second in last year's Snowball Derby, and Grant Enfinger. Several incidents between the drivers during the Papa John’s 100, culminating in a late-race crash under caution, resulted in Five Flags Speedway Officials suspending VanderLey for the remainder of the 2012 Five Flags regular season on Monday.

The next round in the Buddy’s Home Furnishings Blizzard Series will be on Friday, May 25th. This will be the third race of the season and fifth overall for the Gulf Coast Championship Series.

The five Blizzard Series’ and five Miller Lite Series’ events at Mobile International Speedway (AL) will make up the Sunoco Gulf Coast Championship series, where drivers competing at both tracks are eligible for an overall Championship.

VanderLey Update

VanderLey Releases Statement & Plans to Regroup With Off Time

Drivers - 5/2/12

Two-time Five Flags Speedway (FL) Pro Late Model Champion DJ VanderLey spoke to Speed51.com late yesterday evening and wanted to release the following statement after the penalty was handed out from the track on Monday following last Friday's incident in the Papa John's 100:

"First I'd like to publicly apologize to everybody involved in this altercation. I apologized to Grant and to the Braggs Friday night at the track. My actions were uncalled for and I shouldn't have acted the way I did. While I do not condone some of Enfinger's driving tactics as well, I took it too far. I have spoken to all my sponsors and my affiliates and they stand behind me and will support me in my future endeavors. We are going to take some time off to reevaluate our racing program and where we are headed. We started racing when I was only 5 years old, and from the very beginning we have done this as a family; we do it because we love it. It should never have come to this, and we will make sure that it never does again. I willingly accept the actions taken by 5 Flags Speedway dealing with this matter. I made my choice, and I am dealing with the appropriate consequences. I love being at the racetrack, and can't wait to get back out, but I need to get myself and my program back on track first. Lastly, I'd like to say thank you to all the people who stand behind me and support me. This is a rough spot for us right now, but we're not letting it get us down. We will come back better than ever. Thank you."

Michigan Domination In The Buckeye State; Brian Campbell & Terry Senneker Win 7-Up Twin 100s

In one of the more unique race events seen anywhere in the United States, the ARCA/CRA Super Series and ARCA Allegiant Air Gold Cup Outlaw Super Late Models Series co-headlined the 7-Up Twin 100s at the famed half-mile high-banked paved oval of Toledo Speedway in Toledo, Ohio. Both Template Bodied and Outlaw Bodied Super Late Models were the main events of a beautiful Sunday afternoon in Northern Ohio in one of the rare times that both classes of cars are together in one show.

A packed house on hand was treated to a Michigan domination - more specifically West Michigan - in the form of Brian Campbell in the ARCA/CRA Super Series and Terry Senneker in the ARCA Allegiant Air Gold Cup Outlaw Super Late Models Series as both drivers, from the suburbs of Grand Rapids in Wyoming, MI and Wayland, MI respectively, took their machines to victory lane. Both races were dominated by drivers from the Western Michigan area. A whopping seven positions within the top five in each event were occupied by Wolverine State drivers from over on the west side of the state.

ARCA/CRA Super Series – 7-Up 100

In the ARCA/CRA Super Series portion of the 7-Up Twin 100s, Campbell and fellow westsider, two-time Series Champion Johnny VanDoorn (Coopersville, MI) were the class of the field throughout the afternoon before Campbell would eventually pull away to score the win. VanDoorn finished third while another West Michigan pilot, Alec Carll (Grand Rapids, MI) came home in fourth giving West Michigan three of the top four finishing positions.

“The car was good all day long and especially on long runs, but we had some trouble on the restarts,” Explained Campbell after climbing from his #20 K.B.R. Development Ford. “That was a lot of run racing with Johnny (VanDoorn). We rubbed a little from time to time, but that’s just hard-nosed racing and I had a lot of fun today.”

Earlier in the afternoon, the 33-year-old broke VanDoorn’s three-year-old Track Record in EDCO Welding Qualifying.

Terry Fisher Jr., and Eddie VanMeter brought the 28-car field down to Chief Starter, Brian Duncan’s green flag and it would be Fisher Jr., grabbing the lead early on before VanMeter regrouped and surged past the fellow Hoosier State driver to take the lead on lap five. VanMeter brought VanDoorn and Campbell, who started fifth, with him. On lap eight, both drove by VanMeter to take over first and second spots. On lap 13, Campbell made the pass for the top spot with VanDoorn settling in behind him.

For the next 50+ laps Campbell followed VanDoorn’s tire tracks all around the half-mile. On lap 63, Campbell reclaimed the lead forcing VanDoorn to chase. The most serious of the nine cautions that waved throughout the afternoon came on lap 89 when Kenzie Ruston and Nate Caruth got together coming out of turn four on a restart forcing the field to take evasive action. Chad Finley, a regular in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by GM Performance Parts, slowed to avoid the wreck in front of him when several cars slammed into the back end of his machine, and in turn, sent Finley’s machine over on its roof on the front stretch.

Everyone was ok after the incident and in all total, six cars were done for the day. The ensuing restart allowed VanDoorn to make a run at the leader and they touched several times when two green-white-checkered restarts slowed things down. On the final restart, Campbell was able to get away cleanly leaving VanDoorn to battle with 2011 Winchester 400 Champion, Boris Jurkovic. As Campbell crossed the stripe first, Jurkovic was able to slip by VanDoorn to take the runner-up spot.

“We had a good car today, but I didn’t have anything for those guys up front,” The 42-year-old Jurkovic, who started 12th, stated as he stood next to his #53 Reliable Recovery Service Chevrolet. “If it wasn’t for those last two restarts, I wouldn’t have had a shot at Johnny (VanDoorn). But it was a good day, the car is in good shape and we’ll take it.”

“That was a lot of fun, some good old fashioned beating and banging,” VanDoorn said after climbing out of his #61 JEGS.com Chevrolet . “That was some good hard racing. We didn’t get a flat with a few laps to go like the last race, the fenders are all on the car and I couldn’t be happier. We’ll go to Berlin in a couple of weeks and hopefully Brian (Campbell) and I will battle again in front of the hometown fans.”

Jurkovic and VanDoorn joined Campbell up on the podium in second and third while Alec Carll was impressive in finishing fourth as Rebecca Kasten, who finished third in the 15-lap Last Chance Race to transfer into the show, started 25th and earned the events’ Hard-Charger Award by finishing fifth. Pole-Sitter Fisher finished sixth with three-time Series Champion, Scott Hantz, seventh. Nick Gullatta, Steve Dorer, and Brent Jack finished off the top 10.

ARCA Allegiant Air Gold Cup Outlaw Super Late Models Series – 7-Up 100

Terry Senneker put on a dominating display of driving in the Outlaw Super Late Models portion of the 7-Up Twin 100s as he checked out on the field once he took the lead on lap 32. From there, it was all Senneker as he proceeded to run away with the race, lapping cars at a rapid rate and in the end, only the top five were safe from Senneker putting them a lap behind.

Four of the top five finishers were all from the West Michigan area as Steve Needles (Berrien Springs, MI) and Mike Root (Grand Rapids, MI) finished second and third for a clean sweep of the podium. Dakota Carlson (Cedar Springs, MI) finished fourth while J.R. Roahrig (Plymouth, IN) was the only non-West Michigan based driver in the top five.

“We had a great car today and I just kept running my race and staying clean the whole time,” Stated the 32-year-old nephew of former ASA Legend, Bob Senneker. “I think if anyone would’ve challenged, I might’ve had a little something to fall back on, but fortunately we didn’t need too press anything today. Great start to the year that’s for sure.” He ended.

Two weeks prior, Senneker’s #37 Senneker Performance Chevrolet was in victory lane at his home track of Berlin Raceway in Marne, Michigan in the tracks Ice Breaker 100.

Marcus Malcuit was scheduled to start on the pole of the 100-lap main for the Outlaw Super Late Models portion of the 7-Up Twin 100s but the Strasburg, Ohio driver’s car wouldn’t fire when the field was sent out onto the track at the conclusion of the ARCA/CRA Super Series race. The revised front row would be a couple of Toledo Speedway veterans, four-time and defending Series Champion, Dennis Strickland and five-time Toledo Speedway Sportsman Track Champion, Ron Allen.

As the green flag waved, Allen and Scott Hantz, one of three drivers pulling double-duty in both races, collided and spun in the infield sending the field scattering. Amazingly, all 22 starters were able to continue. On the restart, Strickland jumped out to the early lead while the rest of the field jockeyed for position behind the Carelton, MI veteran. Strickland paced the field for the first 17 laps until Mike Luberda, Jr., who started fifth and had been methodically passing cars and reeling in Strickland, took the lead away on lap 18.

Luberda brought some stout drivers with him in the form of Terry Senneker who started seventh, Fast Qualifier, J.R. Roahrig, and Toledo favorite, Harold Fair Jr. The quartet pulled away from the rest of the pack, setting a torrid pace in the process. Senneker searched high and low looking for a way around Luberda and would make the eventual race winning pass on lap 32. In the meantime, Steve Needles, who started 12th, had passed Strickland to get into the top five for the first time in the race and was closing in on the top four.

On lap 55, while running in second, Luberda lost a motor coming out of turn two and collected the third place car of Fair, who had gotten around Roahrig for the final podium position. On the next restart, Fair pulled into the pits with too much damage to continue leaving Needles to fight with Roahrig, who had a clearly ailing motor as the car had a very distinctive sound coming from the #16 and would shut off and then turn back on every few laps. This allowed Needles to get by for second with 20 laps to go.

But by this time, Senneker had built up another huge lead and it would be smooth sailing the rest of the way. As the checkered flag waved, he would walk away with his second big Outlaw Super Late Model victory in two starts to begin his 2012 racing season. Needles, the winner of the Intimidator 100 at Kalamazoo Speedway in Kalamazoo, MI the previous weekend, would cross the stripe three seconds back of his former teammate.

“We had a good car, I just missed it big time in Qualifying,” The 27-year-old Needles explained after climbing from his #14 T.A. Gentry Supply Chevrolet. “We started right in the middle of the field and it took us a while to get up to the front. Even if we had something left for Terry (Senneker), I’m not real sure if we could’ve done anything with him. He was pretty quick all day long.”

The third West Michigan representative to stand on the podium next to Senneker and Needles was former ARCA Gold Cup Outlaw Super Late Models Series Champion, Mike Root, who steered his #9 Universal Graphic Solutions Chevrolet to a third place finish after starting next to Senneker on the outside of the fourth row.

“We’re pretty happy to finish strong here,” said Root. “This place is tough and the competition today was pretty darn good.”

Roahrig brought his ailing machine home in fourth just ahead of Dakota Carlson who finished off the top five. Strickland was the first car one lap down in sixth while Barry Hartwell, Claude Plante, Jr., Jack Varney, Jr., and Brent Jack would complete the top 10. For Jack, it was his second consecutive 10th place finish of the day as he also finished 10th in the ARCA/CRA Super Series race from earlier in the day.

News & Notes

Track Record Falls in One Series While Another Was Only 0.097 Seconds Off

Earlier in the afternoon, Campbell out-qualified the 35-car ARCA/CRA Super Series field in EDCO Welding Qualifying by breaking the track record with a 15.370 which measures out to 117.111mph. The previous record was held by VanDoorn who turned a 15.437 back in August 2009. Jeff Lane won the Last Chance Race over, Andrew Morrissey, Kasten, Billy Leslie, Nate Caruth and Ed Szelagowski, Jr., who all transferred into the show.

In Fastime Racing Engines & Parts Qualifying for the ARCA Allegiant Air Glass City Gold Cup Outlaw Super Late Models held earlier in the afternoon, Roahrig toured around the fast half-mile high-banks at an impressive 14.815 which equals out to a fast 121.498mph over the 25-car field that was on hand. Roahrig broke the track record during the 2011 Glass City 200 on October 1st with a 14.718-second lap. Three cars who were on the grounds did not answer the call for the 100-lap race; Malcuit, Chad Guinn, and Paul Pelletier.

Double-Duty Drivers Turn In Mixed Results

Three Drivers pulled double-duty by running in both 100-lap mains with the most high-profile of those being three-time ARCA/CRA Super Series Champion, Scott Hantz as well as 2011 ASA Midwest Tour Champion, Andrew Morrissey. However, it was the third double-duty driver who had the most successful day of the three as Stroh, Indiana veteran, Brent Jack left Toledo, Ohio with a pair of 10th place finishes. Both of his #41 Brent’s Automotive machines left the Buckeye State speed plant with little to no damage.

Hantz was perhaps the most high-profile of the three double-duty drivers as the Angola, Indiana veteran has visited victory lane on numerous occasions at Toledo. After finishing seventh in the ARCA/CRA Super Series portion of the day, he then climbed behind the wheel of his #72 Top Speed Fabrication Outlaw bodied machine. As the field took the green flag, he and Ron Allen collided sending both spinning into the infield. After going a lap down on lap 30, he soon pulled off and was shown 17th in the final results.

As for Morrissey, he had an adventurous time in the ARCA/CRA Super Series race as the DeForest, Wisconsin driver was involved in a couple of mid race cautions in his #139 B&B Racing Engines entry before ended his afternoon early after being involved in Chad Finley’s rollover accident on lap 89. He then went on to make his Outlaw Bodied Super Late Model debut behind the wheel of Dave Klein’s #41 Badger Diversified Metals ride. After battling an ill-handling racecar for the first quarter of the race, he would pull off and was credited with a 19th place finish in his maiden Outlaw voyage.

Chad Finley’s Second Ride On His Roof In Eight Months

A regular in the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by GM Performance Parts, DeWitt, Michigan driver, Chad Finley made only his second career ARCA/CRA Super Series appearance and first since he was just 15-years-old in 2008 at Berlin Raceway. After qualifying an impressive second fastest out of the 35 teams on the grounds, Finley ran in the top five with the leaders for most of the afternoon until a collision knocked a wheel out of balance just past halfway. After pitting for repairs, he came back out and got back into the top 10 before a wild ride he won’t soon forget.

Coming out of turn four on a restart, Nate Caruth made contact with Kenzie Ruston, which sent Ruston around. Finley checked up to avoid the sideways Ruston when several cars piled into the back end of Finley’s #42 autoparts2020.com ride. The momentum from the wave of cars slamming into the back end of the 20-year-old’s machine sent his machine over on its side and eventually on its roof in a lazy roll before coming to rest on the start / finish line. This was the maiden voyage for Finley’s brand new Howe Racing Enterprises machine the team bought only two months earlier.

This is the second time in eight months that Finley has been on his lid. Back in August 2011 in a JEGS/CRA race at Winchester Speedway in Winchester, Indiana, a collision with Eddie Hoffman sent Finley on a wild ride in turn three as he climbed the wall and rolled his machine down the embankment before coming to rest at the bottom the track. Ironically the next race for JEGS/CRA is This Sunday, May 6th on the legendary high banks of Winchester.

Luberda’s Day Ends With A Blown Motor After Leading Early

In the wake of Terry Senneker’s dominance in the ARCA Allegiant Air Glass City Gold Cup Outlaw Super Late Models Series portion of the 7-Up Twin 100s, Mike Luberda, Jr. may have been the only driver on the grounds who could’ve ran with the eventual winner, even after getting passed by him for the lead on lap 32. The AuGres, Michigan veteran powered by early race leader, four-time and defending Series Champion, Dennis Strickland on lap 18 and brought Senneker with him.

After Senneker went by for the top spot, Luberda’s #40 LeClair Fuels machine tried to keep up with Senneker’s torrid pace while at the same time fighting off the advances of Fast Qualifier, J.R. Roahrig, who later had to deal with electrical issues the second half of the race. Perhaps it was the pace that Senneker set combined with keeping Roahrig’s #16 Bobby Blount Motorsports bullet behind him that was culprit for the dramatics on lap 55 as Luberda lost a motor coming out of turn two ending his afternoon. He was credited with a 13th place finish.

Luberda is looking at a full run at the ARCA Gold Cup Outlaw Super Late Models Series Championship as well as making select appearances with the Main Event Racing Series during the 2012 racing season. He’ll have time to replace his broken motor as the next races on his calendar won’t come until Memorial Day Holiday Weekend on Saturday, May 26th at Auto City Speedway in Clio, Michigan for a Main Event Racing Series event, then on Sunday, May 27th at Spartan Speedway in Mason, Michigan for the second ARCA Gold Cup race of the season

Ohio Based Drivers Have A Tough Day At Buckeye State Speed Plant

Ironically, with the two 100-lap main events at Toledo Speedway in Toledo, Ohio, representation from the state of Ohio in both segments of the 7-Up Twin 100s was hard to come by. Only three teams in each century-distance race carried the scarlet and grey colors of the Buckeye State. North Canton, Ohio driver, Nick Gullatta, was the most successful of the Ohio-based teams as he finished an impressive eighth in the final rundown for the ARCA/CRA Super Series. Johnny Jenkins (Lancaster, OH) was 12th while the Buckeye State representative with the most success at Toledo, Jason Dietsch (Edgerton, OH) struggled to an 18th place finish after running out of fuel. Among the teams not making the show out of the Last Chance Race, several were from Ohio as Kyle Jones (Germantown, OH), Justin Alsip (Germantown, OH), Jeep Pflum (Cincinnati, OH), and Dave Carter (Grove City, OH) all failed to transfer in.

In the Outlaw Super Late Models portion of the day, Buckeye State drivers were even more rare to come by as Nick Grodi (Oak Harbor, OH) placed the best with a 15th place showing while Toledo native, Mike Young dropped out in 18th and Open-Wheel Modified stand out, Brian Nester (Enon, OH) was the first car out of the race just a lap into the race. Strasburg, Ohio veteran Marcus Malcuit was scheduled to start on the pole of the Outlaws main, but the car wouldn’t fire when the field was sent out onto the track at the conclusion of the ARCA/CRA Super Series race. A disappointed Malcuit was unable to take the green flag after qualifying fourth fastest and drawing the pole position when the top 10 redrew for their feature starting spots.

Final Wrap-Up

Brandon Thirlby’s 2012 I-96 Speedway Championship Title Chase Begins THIS Saturday, May 5th

Traverse City, Michigan (Wednesday, May 2nd, 2012): The end of April was supposed to feature a nice two races in two nights weekend close to home for Brandon Thirlby starting on April 27th at Mt. The Thirlby Automotive Racing Team went one for two over the weekend after racing at Mt. Pleasant and finishing a solid third. The next day at I-96, Track Officials were forced to postpone opening night until this Saturday, May 5th.

“We didn't do as much racing as we would have liked, but we recorded another top five finish and my brother Collin (Thirlby) did an awesome job in the modified with a second place finish on Friday night.” Stated the Traverse City, Michigan driver. “The car was good, but we needed a little something more and I think we’ll be ok this weekend when we go back to Mt. Pleasant and especially at I-96.” He added.

This Friday, May 4th will see the 24-year-old make a return trip to Mt. Pleasant for UMP DIRTcar Racing Series weekly action and then on Friday, May 5th will offer the only opportunity for Thirlby to get some much needed track time on the fast and newly revamped 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked dirt oval of I-96 Speedway in preparation for the Inaugural Michigan Dirt Cup Late Models Tour race there on Saturday, May 19th.

Pleasant on Friday and tuning up at I-96 for the first Michigan Dirt Cup race.” He continued. “We're definitely getting anxious for the MDC to start up and also the I-96 points chase. There isn’t a lot of show there this season for us, so every one of them is pretty important and hopefully we can start off strong there.” He ended.

Michigan Dirt Cup Modifieds Tour Championship Title Defense Begins This Weekend For Jacob Poel

Michigan Dirt Cup Modifieds Tour Championship Title Defense Begins This Weekend For Jacob Poel

Spring Lake, Michigan (Tuesday, May 1st, 2012): When the formation of the Michigan Dirt Cup Modifieds Tour became a reality on April 30th, 2011 with the inaugural race at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan. 63 Teams answered the call for the brand new series. This was also the season opener at the fast 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked dirt oval and little did Jacob Poel know, that the start of the 2011 campaign would be a race season only dreams are made of.

Now the Spring Lake, Michigan driver hopes a repeat is in the works as all of the same logistics are in place this Saturday, May 5th as I-96 Speedway hosts the 7th annual Ice Breaker / Opening Night 2012. In addition it’s also the 2012 Door Opener for the Michigan Dirt Cup Modifieds Tour. At the end of 2011, the 25-year-old would be crowned both the 2011 Michigan Dirt Cup Modifieds Tour Champion as well as the 2011 I-96 Speedway UMP Modifieds Track Champion.

"The 82 crew has built confidence in their program and is ready to take on the numbers the Dirt Cup will offer," Stated the Reigning UMP DIRTcar Racing Series Michigan State Champion. "We’re excited! The last couple weeks we have been really fine tuning the car and feel it’s going to be the best its’ been so far this season.” He added. In seven races he’s raced in early on in the 2012 season, Poel has recorded Two Feature Wins, Four Top Five’s, and Six Top 10 finishes.

“Having the first Michigan Dirt Cup race at one of our home tracks should play into our favor." Poel continued as he and the entire Jacob Poel Racing Team continue to prepare for the all-important first race of the season for the Flint, Michigan based series. "We want to start the MDC Tour out right and that means with a win and to be on top of the point’s right from the first race!" He ended.

Campbell Wins Wild 7 Up 100

Toledo, OH (April 29, 2012) - On a cool day at Toledo Speedway the sun shined bright and the ARCA/CRA Super Series drivers put on a wild show that featured hard racing up front with Brian Campbell and Johnny VanDoorn racing for the lead for over 80 laps for the 7 Up 100. Behind them things were more traumatic with numerous cautions and a red flag for a ten car pileup that ended with a driver on his top on the 89th lap, with no one injured.

VanDoorn was the fastest in practice nearly eclipsing his own track record of 15.437 seconds by turning a lap of 15.446. Brian Campbell in a glimpse of what was to come was a close second, setting up a battle that was to rage between the friends all day to be the fastest on the track.

Campbell set a new track record to take the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier Award with a lap of 15.370 seconds, Chad Finley was second at 15.646 seconds with VanDoorn third, Eddie Van Meter fourth and Terry Fisher, Jr. fifth. Campbell then drew a five for the invert putting Fisher on the pole. Jeff Lane, driving for an injured Joe Beaver, won the last chance race leading every lap after just missing being the 20th qualifier and locked into the field.

Fisher took off early leading the first four laps, before Van Meter roared past to lead a few laps. As they battled up front, VanDoorn starting directly in front of Campbell stormed to the front pulling Campbell with him. VanDoorn took the lead on the eighth lap with Campbell behind him. Campbell took over for two laps on lap 14.
VanDoorn drove back past him on the 16th lap in a bold move getting the jump on Campbell as they exited the second turn and drove hard into the third turn. The move earned him the AR Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award.

VanDoorn held the lead until lap 62, when Campbell came back past after a caution. From there VanDoorn would pull up beside Campbell, even showing signs he could get around him, but Campbell held him off to get the win, surviving four restarts in the last 11 laps, each with VanDoorn nearly getting past him. Boris Jurkovic passed VanDoorn on the last lap to finish second after VanDoorn was unsuccessful in attempting to pass Campbell from his outside position on the restart. VanDoorn finished third, Alec Carll fourth and Becca Kasten earned her way in from the last chance race to finish fifth.

"This car was phenomenal on long runs." Campbell commented. "It had a hard time refiring after the cautions. The crew did a great job of getting this car ready."
Behind them things were a little more interesting with numerous cautions as drivers fought for every position.

The red flag flew for a 10 car pileup on the 89th lap. As the drivers restarted from a caution caused by a spin, Kenzie Ruston slid up the track as cars on the bottom slid higher coming out of the fourth turn. The car got loose, and as she started to slip, then came in contact with Nate Caruth. Both cars then slid down the track into traffic. In the ensuing melee Chad Finely was completely sideways on the track as Steve Dorer caught him in the right side door as the cars slid Finley's car tipped up on its side and ended up on its top. Finley climbed out uninjured to the cheers of the large crowd.

Campbell took home the Team Construction Clean Sweep Award for earning both the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier Award and the win. He also earned the Ford Racing Award for winning using a Ford engine, and the VDL Fuel Systems Hot Lap of the Race Award for turning the fastest lap during the race.

VanDoorn earned the Turn One Lap Leader Award for leading the most laps and the RaceTrailerSales.com Hallfway Leader Award.

For moving from her 25th starting position to finish fifth Becca Kasten earned the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger Award and one of the Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Awards. Kasten also earned the Boyne Machine Company Rookie of the Race Award as the highest finishing Rookie. Steve Dorer started 20th as last driver locked in through qualifying and finished ninth despite being involved in the accident on lap 89 to earn the second Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award.

The next event for the ARCA/CRA Super Series will be the Berlin 125 at Berlin Raceway in Marne, MI. The .400 mile track has been host to some very close racing for the ARCA/CRA Super Series with the father son team of Fred and Brian Campbell leading all drivers in wins at the track. Each has three wins for a total of six of the 13 ARCA/CRA Super Series races. A strong field is expected as drivers get tuned up for the Rowdy 251 scheduled at Berlin Raceway in June. VanderLey Suspended for 2012 Season

VanderLey Suspended for 2012 Season

Regular Season Does Not Include This Years Snowball Derby

Muskegon's Mike Mike Garvey might have won the race and broke a string of 13 wins by GARC chassis, but all the talk in short track racing has centered around defending 5 Flags Speedway Pro Late Model Champion D.J. VanderLey.

Five Flags Speedway PR
D.J. VanderLey has been suspended from competition for the the remainder of the 2012 regular season. The suspension comes on the heels of Friday Night’s 100 Lap Blizzard Series event for Super Late Models. The action was taken by Track Management following an incident under a lap 96 caution flag period with fellow competitior Grant Enfinger.

“ The actions chosen by D. J. VanderLey on Friday Night were absolutely unacceptable, and will not be tolerated,” stated Speedway General Manager Tim Bryant, “and we believe only a penalty this severe will let D.J. and all other competitors know how serious we are about this.”

The suspension takes effect immediately, and includes any and all race events thru the season ending “Night of Champions” on September 29th.

Garvey Navigates Cautions to Collect Emotional GARC Bounty, Papa John’s 100 Win28

By Chuck Corder

Five Flags Speedway hoped to add some heat to the Blizzard Series this week with a little cash incentive.

The nation’s elite Super Late Models were happy to oblige.

In one of the more heart-pumping Blizzard races in recent history, Mike Garvey rose above the aggressive 30-car field and a caution-plagued affair to capture the Papa John’s 100 on Friday.

Garvey collected the $513 bounty Five Flags put up for grabs to end the 13-race Blizzard streak that Grand American Race Cars had boasted.

“You just have to keep your focus and concentrate and hit your marks,” said Garvey, whose chassis is made by Port City Racecar. “Anything can happen on the restarts. I was nervous at the end. Thankfully, it all worked out.”

Thankfully, despite the 100 lapper being marred by 10 cautions. Garvey managed to avoid the lot of them, making his move on Augie Grill on Lap 75.

Grill was preoccupied with Casey Smith and when the pair couldn’t shake each other, Garvey pounced from his third position.

“Augie and Casey were beating the (heck) out of each other,” Garvey said. “The opportunity presented itself and I was just trying to get to the end of the race.”

Garvey held off T.J. Reaid and David Rogers for the checkered flag. Rogers, the veteran who has raced the Snowball Derby nearly 30 times, was looking for his first career victory at Pensacola’s high banks.

Rogers was running second down the stretch, but gave way to Reaid on the final restart.

Reaid made a valiant effort to catch Garvey on the final green flag dropped with 98 completed laps, but he failed to make it stick in any of the turns.

There were several sets of fireworks on the speedway all night. The first battle between Smith and Grill whet the appetite for drama later from another set of drivers.

Grill started on the pole after fast-qualifier Bubba Pollard (16.713 second) rolled a six to set the invert. Smith wasn’t far back and quickly worked his way to Grill’s bumper.

The duo exchanged some unpleasantries earlier in the week and then exchanged paint all over the track Friday. The lead see-sawed between Smith and Grill for much of the race until Smith, running second at the time, came to pit row because of a flat tire.

“Pensacola one of those places you love to hate it,” Smith said earlier this week. “You almost dread to come here, but you know you’ve got to because it’s like going to Daytona.”

Smith rallied to finish sixth while Grill finished 17th because of tire issues himself late in the race, even having to stop at the top of Turn 4 late in the race that brought out the final caution.

A tactic that irked the night’s big winner.

“We probably should’ve been outta here a half-hour ago,” Garvey said. There was no reason for Augie to stop at the top of the track like that. I almost hit him.

The other ongoing melee that scarred the night came between two-time Allen Turner Pro Late Model series track champion D.J. VanderLey and Grant Enfinger, who boasts a NASCAR deal this season.

The two first got into each other and brought out the caution on Lap 73. Enfinger and VanderLey were in a close race for seventh and Enfinger ended up on the short end of it, spinning in Turn 4. It happened right in the middle of the turn and once again caused a chain reaction of cars sliding all around to avoid the yellow’s catalyst — a running theme throughout Friday evening.

While they were under caution, Enfinger’s No. 82 passed up his assigned spot to reach the side of VanderLey’s No. 4 up Turn 3 as sharing unpleasantries.

It didn’t end there, though. In fact, it only got worse. Much worse.

In the final laps, while the field was coasting under yet another yellow, VanderLey appeared to dive-bomb Enfinger in Turn 2.

“With four laps to go,” VanderLey said, “(Enfinger) was behind us off (Turn 4) and drove us into the wall until he hit us. I spun. I hit back under caution. It sucks it happened. Our car was great. We started 24th and had climbed up as far as (sixth). It was an extremely clean race for the most part for us.”

Things got even uglier between the two as track officials reported that as Enfinger was getting out of the car, VanderLey drove into him again.

“That’s about the hardest I’ve been hit in the back,” Enfinger said. “I was trying to get out from the guard rail and he fires it up and tries to hit me. I guess he was trying to hurt me. I tried to get in at him through the window, but he sped off of course.”

Enfinger, who finished 18th, was able to escape injury. VanderLey’s actions earned the Auburn honors college sophomore a disqualification for unsportsmanlike behavior.

Security had to be called to separate the two crews in the pits.

Garvey’s patience and ability to avoid any of the fracases brought tears to the eyes of car owner Tracy Goodson.

A choked-up Goodson watched his guy pose for photos with the winning trophy from his nearby golf cart.

“I can’t describe it,” said Goodson, who owns several local businesses. “We’ve had a hard couple of years.”

Garvey and Goodson have teamed up for the last three years, but Garvey’s recent relocation to Pensacola has turned things around for the team.

They won the Allen Turner Pro Late Model Series opener at the famed half-mile, asphalt oval last month.

“Mike’s killed himself working on these cars,” Goodson said. “I knew once he got down here full time, he’d get back going. Mike does what it takes to get the car to Victory Lane. I can’t say enough.

“He deserves it and the whole crew deserves it. It’s pretty awesome. He’s the best short-track racer in the nation.”

Garvey certainly backed that opinion up Friday night.
