VanDoorn wins Klotz Synthetic Lubricants 100 Presented by Spray Power at Toledo Speedway

Johnny VanDoorn muscled his way to the lead with 37 laps to go passing Scott Hantz to earn his third CRA win of the season.

After being knocked out of a third place finish at the Redbud 300 on the last lap of the race Johnny VanDoorn was not going to let anyone stand in his way to victory in the Klotz Synthetic Lubricants 100 Presented by Spray Power. On the 64th lap Scott Hantz was blocking down on VanDoorn as Hantz was trying to maintain his lead when VanDoorn used the chrome horn to knock Hantz loose to slip under him for the lead.

VanDoorn then ran out to a large lead as Hantz battled Joey Miller for second. Miller took second, Hantz third, Nick Gullatta fourth and Brian Campbell finished fifth.

"Scott and I have raced together a lot in outlaws and in these cars since I was 17 years old, and he has been doing it for a very long time." VanDoorn stated. "He holds his ground and doesn't give in. I poked my nose in there and he didn't move and I got to do what I got to do."

Kenny Wallace going from Nationwide Series race at MIS to Late Models at I-96 Speedway

Kenny Wallace going from Nationwide Series race at MIS to Late Models at I-96 Speedway

The most challenging race veteran Kenny Wallace was going to have to run Saturday wasn't the NASCAR Nationwide Carfax 200 at Michigan International Speedway.

It wasn't the evening's Super Late Model race at I-96 Speedway, either.

The problem facing Wallace was how in the world was he going to get from the Brooklyn-based two-mile superspeedway to the three-eighths mile dirt track in Lake Odessa in time for the drop of the green flag?

Fortunately, Wallace has it all figured out. Wallace will park his No. 28 Federated Auto Parts Chevrolet in the MIS garage once the checkered flag waves there, then catch a helicopter ride to his next race.

"It's not that I am spoiled, but I will have a helicopter waiting after the Michigan race," Wallace said. "There is no other way we can make it because the Nationwide race starts at 2 p.m., and it is probably going to be a three-hour race. It will get over at 5 p.m., and I won't have enough time to drive over.

"I will have plenty of Pedialyte for the flight and a cold towel."

The 46-year old Wallace enters the Michigan race 18th overall in the season points standings. He made his Nationwide debut in 1988, and his 468 career starts is second all time only to Jason Keller (509).

Wallace will have a pair of challenges facing him at both races. The Nationwide Series will be using its new car for just the second time and the first since the July 3 race at Daytona.

He raced at I-96 a year ago and won the Modified feature after spinning out early in the race and having to go to the back of the pack. He will take on area Late Model standouts when he returns this weekend, and Wallace said he expects the going to be tougher this year. He will be running a Late Model provided by I-96.

"I don't think I have a chance to win this year (at I-96) for the mere fact that it is not my car," Wallace said. "When you jump into someone else's car and you are racing someone else's equipment, you just don't know what to expect.

"I don't run Super Late Models that much, either. I did run the Prelude to the Dream at Eldora, but I only run about three to five races a year. I have raced 30 Modifieds races and won four of them this year, but I'm a little rusty when it comes to the Super Late Models."

This marks the third time that Wallace will race at I-96.

"I'm excited to come there Saturday night and I love the fans and that's the reason I'm coming," Wallace said. "I will sign autographs until everyone is happy."

ONE TO GO
Drivers scrambling for a spot in the National Hot Rod Association's Countdown playoff will have one more race to qualify, and don't write off the drivers who barely sneak in at the last race, either. A year ago, Robert Hight qualified in Funny Car in the final race and went on to win the championship.

The series heads to Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota for this weekend's Lucas Oil Nationals. David Grubnic is hanging onto 10th place in Top Fuel, leading Terry McMillen by 19 points. Tony Pedregon is 10th in Funny Car points, and he is trying to fend off Jeff Arend, who is 33 points behind him.

GOOD LUCK
Mike Quick of Grand Rapids has been selected to sing the National Anthem prior to the start of Saturday's NASCAR Nationwide race at Michigan International Speedway.

Quick was asked to sing the National Anthem for MIS Camping World Truck race two years ago. I asked Quick if he was nervous about this weekend. He said to ask him two minutes before he steps up to the microphone on Saturday.

Check out his previous MIS performance on YouTube.

CANCER SURVIVOR TO BE HONORED
Sprint Cup's Carl Edwards and his sponsor, Aflac, will induct Donald Selfridge of Big Rapids into its Crew of Courage program this weekend. The program honors individuals who have overcome illnesses, accidents and injuries.

Selfridge, a cancer survivor, will have an opportunity to meet Edwards this weekend, and his name will be placed on a feather-shaped sticker that will be applied to Edwards' racing helmet for the remainder of the season.

Wyoming's Brian Campbell holds his own in ARCA event before late-race difficulties at Berlin

Wyoming's Brian Campbell holds his own in ARCA event before late-race difficulties at Berlin

Steve Kaminski
The Grand Rapids Press

MARNE -- Brian Campbell expressed joy, frustration, pride and disappointment after Saturday night’s ARCA 200 at the Berlin Raceway.

Yeah, it was quite a night for the Wyoming stock car driver.

Campbell was pleased and proud of the D & B Motorsports team, which hired him to pilot its No. 24 Hantz Group Chevrolet for the race. Campbell set fast time in just his second career start, and he had the lead with 50 laps to go and was pulling away.

However, Campbell spun out on lap 150 while trying to avoid the spinning lapped car of Justin Marks heading into turn one. That pushed Campbell back to 10th place on the restart, and he eventually tangled with Frank Kimmel while trying to fight his way through the pack. Campbell settled for 23rd place.

“We take our Late Models to all the big tracks, and we do well with them,” said Campbell, who made his first ARCA start since finishing third at Toledo Speedway in 2004. “To come up to this level and race against guys who do this for a living was great. We couldn’t do it without sponsors, and they let us run up front with these guys.

“It started out with lapped cars not getting out of the way. I know they are all racing for position. But we were the leaders and we were coming and they have to get out of the way.”

Joey Coulter of Miami Springs, Fla., took over the lead when Campbell spun out with 50 laps to go. Coulter went on to beat out Patrick Sheltra and Steve Arpin for his first career ARCA win in 33 career starts.

Don DeWitt of Zeeland, who owns D & B Motorsports, fielded two cars for Saturday’s race. Michael Simko of White Lake finished eighth after starting 11th. It was Simko’s second start of the season. He finished 16th in the Racing For Wildlife 200 on June 11 at Michigan International Speedway.

DeWitt said he is going to start focusing on shorter tracks such as the Berlin half-mile, adding that big tracks cost too much money and are hard on equipment. So, DeWitt put Campbell behind the wheel this weekend in his second car.

“For the first 150 laps, I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe that,” DeWitt said. “He had 150 laps on those tires, and he was leading the race, and guys who had new tires couldn’t catch him. What does that tell you? He is a heck of a driver, and that is a heck of a car.

“I am happy. We had the fastest car, and everybody knows it. We got tangled up and that’s what happens. I’m proud of both drivers. Michael did a heck of a job driving."

Berlin Raceway Storyline: August 7th

Joey Coulter wins the ARCA 200; Brian Tillema also victorious

Marne, MI- The ARCA Series was back at Berlin Raceway this past Saturday night. It was a perfect night and the fans were treated to some great racing action by both the ARCA Series and the Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks. Winners for the feature races included #76 Brian Tillema (Pro Stocks) and first time feature winner #16 Joey Coulter(ARCA).
The first feature of the night was the Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks. Starting on front row were #18 Mitch Meppelink and #22 Darin Niemi. Dave Hull in the #20 took the quick lead from Meppelink, the only thing that slowed Hull down was a caution on lap 8. Meppelink lost control going into turn 2, Brandon Hermiller in the #6 car went off the back stretch to avoid any contact. A lap was barely complete off the restart when once again Meppelink brought out the yellow, he spun between turns 1 and 2. Brian Tillema in the #76 benefited from the restart; Tillema quickly past Hull for the lead. Tillema would fight off Hull and #51 Weston Jewett for the win. Not only did Tillema win the feature, but with his win he would move to first in the point standing’s, leading Jewett by two points.
The ARCA Series was up next, West Michigan native and fan favorite Brian Campbell in the #24 car started on the poll. The #22 Dakoda Armstrong got off to a fast start, it wasn’t until lap 17 that a new leader would emerge. The #44 of Frank Kimmel passed Armstrong underneath, Campbell had moved into second on by lap 22. Armstrong gained a bigger lead as Campbell was slowed by traffic. The first caution of the night flew when #23 Levi Youster lost control by turn 1. On the restart and with no traffic in sight, Campbell began to chase down Armstrong. The #44 car of Kimmel had an extra gear left in him and lost Campbell; a new driver would surface in the hunt for first as Sheltra in the #60 was Campbell’s tail. At the half way mark of the 200 lap feature, Kimmel, Campbell, and Sheltra were all on top of each other. Sheltra finally took the lead as he squeezed between Kimmel and Campbell on the front stretch on lap 103. The outside lane hadn’t been friendly to Campbell all night, but on lap 133 he tried the inside lane going into turn 4 and took the lead from Sheltra. Joey Coulter in the #16 car was also making his move to the front and was gaining on Campbell fast. The action was halted on lap 146, when #32 Justin Marks spun coming out of turn 1 and leader Campbell spun to avoid him. Out of the restart Campbell started tenth and Coulter was the new leader. Another flag flew for Campbell and Kimmel on lap 169; Campbell would pit and not return. Coulter would hold his ground though, not even another caution would deter his quest for victory, on lap 175 the #31 of Tim George Jr. hit the wall coming out of turn 3. Coulter would continue to lead as Sheltra and #55 Steve Arpin began to fight for second. Neither Sheltra nor Arpin had enough to catch the speedy Coulter, as he took the checker flag for the first time in his career.
Up next for Berlin Raceway is the USAC Silver Crown and USAC Midget Series. The Thursday night event will feature stars like Shane Hmiel and A.J. Fike. The special Berlin event will have a discounted rate for those who attended the ARCA Show this past Saturday. Fans that bring in their ARCA 200 ticket stubs will receive $5 off either an adult ticket or senior ticket. Adult tickets are $20, seniors 60+ are $18, children 6-12 are $5, and children under the age of 5 are FREE. For any additional information, please visit Berlinraceway.com.
