Jeep Van Wormer Ramps Up for ALMS Tripleheader Following Fairbury Runner-Up Finish!
(PINCONNING, MICHIGAN) Jeep Van Wormer and his #55 team traveled to the Land of Lincoln over the May 20-22 weekend for a huge tripleheader. On Friday night, the American Late Model Series (ALMS) sanctioned a $2,000 to win program at the Kankakee County Speedway in Kankakee, Illinois. Jeep won his heat race in preliminary action and later rolled off fourth on the grid in the 40-lap main event. Fighting an ill-handling racecar throughout the A-Main, Jeep wound up a disappointing eleventh in the final rundown.
After switching cars for Saturday's $2,000 to win ALMS / Northern Allstars Late Model Series co-sanctioned battle at the Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, Illinois, Jeep once again won his heat race to earn the pole position for the feature event. The Pinconning, Michigan native stayed towards the front of the stout field throughout the race and eventually scored a stellar runner-up effort behind only winner Jason Feger. Sunday's $2,000 to win Northern Allstars Late Model Series weekend finale at the Shepp's Speedway in Alexander, Illinois was unfortunately washed out by Mother Nature. Full results from the Land of Lincoln can be viewed online at www.dirtondirt.com.
Another trio of races will greet the Iron Motorsports team over the ultra-busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. Jeep plans to enter three $2,000 to win American Late Model Series (ALMS) showdowns from May 27-29 in the states of Michigan and Ohio. The Mount Pleasant Speedway in Mount Pleasant, Michigan will kick things off on Friday, while the action will quickly turn to the Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio on Saturday. The tripleheader will then conclude for the #55 team on Sunday at the famed Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Additional information on these three races can be obtained by clicking on www.americanlatemodelseries.com.

Epling Ready for Sunoco American Late Model Series
Sunoco American Late Model Series 2011 racing season finally starts for Sammy Epling
Perry, Michigan (Thursday, May 26th, 2011): A return trip to his home state of Illinois theoretically seemed like the perfect time for Sammy Epling to bring home his first feature win of the 2011 racing season. In addition to the return home, it was also the 2011 season opener, after four different tries, for the Sunoco American Late Model Series.
The weekend began on May 20th at Kankakee Motor Speedway in Kankakee, Illinois and then continued on May 21st at Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, Illinois. Epling, who now calls Perry, Michigan home, had both dates circled on his 2011 calendar and not only was looking forward to coming back home for the weekend, but to also jump out to a fast start in the chase for the 2011 Sunoco ALMS title behind the wheel of his potent UMP Late Model.
At Kankakee, Epling transferred into the Feature by finished third in his Qualifier Heat Race. In the Feature, the Perry, Michigan resident worked his way up to sixth before the right rear tire sealed up under a caution. On the restart, Epling fell back to ninth which is where he finished. "The car was good. I was happy to finally get to race where I grew up. It was good to see a lot of friends" He explained.
The next night at Fairbury didn't go according to plan for the SJE Motorsports / Doug Finley Motorsports Team. After spinning out in Qualifying, he started in the back of his Qualifier Heat Race and could only get up to sixth, forcing him to have to run the Last Chance Race. After starting seventh, he worked his way up to third to transfer into the feature.
In the feature, Epling would start 19th and moved up to 13th by the 1/2 way point when a caution came out. "The motor went south during the caution, so we had to ride it out," Epling added. He would be shown 20th in the end. "All In all it really was a good weekend. Lots of good competition, we made both races, and sit sixth in points. Our main goal is to finish at the top and win the series points title and this is a good start." He stated.
Now the Sunoco ALMS plays catch up to its' own 2011 schedule as the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend is on tap with three races in three days beginning at the track where Epling is the defending track champion at; Mt. Pleasant Speedway in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on Friday, May 27th as the fast 1/3 (0.333) mile semi-banked dirt oval will mark the series first appearance in the Great Lakes State in 2011.
From there, the series travels to the Buckeye State for two consecutive shows as the first one is at the 3/8s (0.375) mile semi-banked dirt oval of Oakshade Raceway on Saturday, May 28th before wrapping up the holiday weekend at the legendary 1/2 (0.500) mile high-banked dirt oval of Tony Stewart's Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio on Sunday, May 29th.
"We've got three more nights with the Sunoco ALMS this coming Memorial Day Holiday Weekend. I hope Mother Nature cooperates," He laughed. "I do hope to see everyone out at all three shows. Don't forget, we have t-shirts, pink and white, also hoodies as well so come get your shirts or hoodies, or just stop by and say hi." Epling ended.
Epling's #29 Mastersbilt Chassis sporting a Pontiac GTO nose on his UMP Late Model will carry sponsorship decals from; NorthsideTowing.net as well as SJE Trucking, Imaging Solutions, Shift Shop Transmissions, Mike Childers & Sons Excavating, Lane Automotive, Fusion Sign Company, Jeff Smith Home Improvements, NashCar Trailers, Huffy's Marathon, Hedrick Precision Engines, Dowker Racing Engines, M.P.H. Campbell Wins at Baer Field, bad luck bites VanDoorn again
Campbell Finally Gets One at Baer Field
After Years of Trying Campbell Wins in Fort Wayne
by Elgin Traylor - Twitter @elgintraylor
Brian Campbell knew he had his work cut out for him on the final restart of the Asphalt Wars 100. He was running second behind veteran Scott Hantz at Baer Field Speedway in Indiana, a place where Hantz has five career wins. But a rare slip-up by Hantz changed the face of the event in Campbell’s favor with just six laps remaining.
Going into turns three and four, Campbell closed to the back bumper of the white number 72 of Hantz, In a flash of an eye, the 72 skated up the race track, giving Campbell the top spot for the first time with just a few laps remaining. There was no doubt about it after that as Campbell wheeled away from Hantz and drove the Perfect Circle Race Cars machine to the checkered flag.
"I knew I was going to catch him, but passing him was another story," said Campbell. "I know Scott doesn't make many mistakes so when I saw him go up the banking I had to go or there was not going to be another opportunity. It was like the sea just parted for me."
Hantz had been in the lead since lap 34 and was in position for what looked like another victory, but the pressure from Campbell had Hantz driving just a little harder than he had been.
"I got my front brakes a little too hot and I was experiencing a little brake fade there with too much rear brake in the car," said Hantz. "I got into three and I went in a little hot, and it was my race too lose and I lost it for me."
Hantz hung on for second, 1.4 seconds back behind Campbell with a hard charging Jeff Lane in third followed by Derrick Griffin and pole sitter Terry Fisher, Jr., who led early before Hantz got around him.
"We would have loved to win here in front of the hometown crowd,” said Fisher who is from nearby Ossian, IN. “The car was a little tight and we put some rear brake in to solve that. It's hard to beat Scott Hantz here at Baer Field. We were leading and we had a good run. I burned the right front off and I was just hanging on after that."
Fisher has been racing at Baer Field for many years, but like for race winner Campbell, success takes time at a tricky track.
"We came here the first time and I was the slowest car on the track," added Campbell. "We got better every time we came back and I have had a handful of second-place finishes here in other divisions, but today we're number one."
Campbell bases a lot of how he does on the track compared to his dad, legendary Midwestern Late Model racer Freddie Campbell. Now both he and his father have won at the Fort Wayne track.
"My dad has won here and now I have," said Campbell. "So it's off the bucket list and now we can go on. My dad's my hero and we have each won here so it's special."
Championship Jinx for VanDoorn
When you win a championship, all the stars have to line up just right. You get through the wrecks, spins, the trouble and have good runs that accumulate enough to earn you the right as the overall points champion. After two years of running front in the CRA Super Series standings, Johnny VanDoorn finds himself in a huge hole without much more than a fork as his shovel in 2011.
An engine failure at Anderson and a broken rocker arm in practice at Baer Field looked to be the last of the troubles. Rolling out on the grid for the 100 lapper at Baer Field found the bug providing one more sting as the transmission broke.
"It's a big hole," said VanDoorn. "We'll take it one race at a time."
From our count there will be at least 15 drivers in front of him in the standings. Still very possible, but he's used up his mulligans early.
