Eric Jones Race Report
Special fromParagon Racing Team
Quick turnaround for 15-year-old Erik Jones after a rough night at Columbus; Anderson up next
Byron, MI (June 2, 2011) - Erik Jones had high hopes heading into the CoughlinCars.com 100 Presented by JEGS.com on Saturday, May 28th at Columbus Motor Speedway in Columbus, Ohio. The Memorial Day Holiday Weekend would see the Byron, Michigan teenager celebrating his 15th birthday on Memorial Day Monday, so what better birthday present then his first win of 2011?
In the second ever race within the inaugural season for the JEGS/CRA All-Stars Tour Presented by GM Performance Parts, the day started off well enough for Jones as he was quickest in Practice around the 1/3 (0.333) mile semi-banked paved oval. He would win his first Keyser Manufacturing Fast Qualifier Award with a 13.796 which measured out to 86.982mph.
He would then draw a five for an inversion and was looking to get to the front from his fifth starting position. He knew he’d have his work cut out for him with the stellar field in front of and behind him. "Our Paragon Corvette Reproductions Chevrolet was fast right out of the box, after a few laps around the track I knew that this was going to be a fast racecar." Explained the now 15-year-old. "Getting fast time and establishing the track record meant a lot to me and my whole team, it was great to get a pole in the second race of the season."
As Jones worked his way up to second, on lap 27, contact with another car sent Jones into a spin and he was slapped by another machine that had nowhere to go. Forced to pit, Jones would restart at the rear of the field. "The car suffered a lot of front end damage. But this Paragon Racing Team never gave up. After several trips to the pits and a missing front bumper, we still managed an 11th place finish." Jones continued.
"It’s not the finish we set out for, but given the obstacles we faced, to make it to the checkered flag was a huge accomplishment for our team." He added. "Big Thanks to our entire crew who never gave up the whole race." He ended. Jones currently sits second place in the JEGS/CRA/GM point’s standings, just nine markers behind point’s leader, Eddie Hoffman (199-190).
There’s very little turnaround time to fix the damage from Columbus as race #3 in the inaugural season for the JEGS/CRA/GM series is on Saturday, June 4th at the fast ¼ (0.250) mile high-banked paved oval of Anderson Speedway in Anderson, Indiana for the running of the Anderson 100 Presented by JEGS.com.
For the 2011 racing season, Car Owners, Dave and Carol Jones have assembled a top notch put crew which consists of; Crew Chief Butch VanDoorn, along-with Two-Time Defending CRA Super Series Champion Johnny VanDoorn, as well as Branden Lines, Barry Bramblett, Brandon Rose, and Ken Bond.
Jones' #4 Chevrolet Impala will carry primary sponsorship from Paragon Corvette Reproductions as well as, CG Financial Services, Snap Fitness, Simpson Race Products, Looby & Baumgarten CPA's, M.P.H. Promotions, Port City Racecars, and Paragon Racing Team. On Friday night, the American Late Model Series (ALMS) sanctioned a $2,000 to win event at the Mount Pleasant Speedway in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. Rough Holiday Weekend for Epling
Rough Holiday Memorial Day Weekend may force Sammy Epling to take This Weekend (June 3-4th) Off
Perry, Michigan (Thursday, June 2nd, 2011): Motor problems plagued the entire Memorial Day Holiday Weekend for Sammy Epling and his SJE Motorsports / Doug Finley Motorsports team. After Qualifying second fastest out of 29 cars and finished second in his Qualifier Heat Race at Mt. Pleasant Speedway in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan on Friday, May 27th in the first of three scheduled Sunoco American Late Model Series events throughout the holiday weekend, it went all downhill from there.
Epling was involved in an early race incident in the beginning stages of the "Woof Classic" with Curtis Roberts and Matt Miller and the defending track champion was credited with a 22nd place finish. "We were the cause of that wreck!" Epling bluntly stated, "It was totally my fault. I feel bad for getting Curtis (Roberts) and Matt (Miller) involved."
On Saturday, May 28th, the car was fixed and ready to go for Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio, but Mother Nature would be the winner as Sunoco ALM Series and Track Officials were forced to postpone the event. So it was on to the legendary Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio on Sunday, May 29th and things only for the Perry, Michigan driver.
"We struggled bad at Eldora, then we got the motor hot in the heat race and it just wasn't doing anything in the second B Main, so we decided instead of hurting the motor even more, we pulled it in and called it a night." The disappointed driver continued. "We've since pulled the motor out and sent it to Dowker Racing Engines to be checked out and avoid further problems."
Despite the rough weekend, Epling only lost one spot in the chase for the 2011 Sunoco American Late Model Series Points Standings and is currently tied for seventh with Ryan VanderVeen and is only seven points out of the top five. The next time the series is in action is on Friday, June 17th at Moler Raceway Park in Williamsburg, Ohio and then again on Saturday, June 18th back at Oakshade Raceway in Wauseon, Ohio.
In the meantime and with the motor still in the shop at Dowker, Epling and the rest of the team will be forced to take this coming weekend off from racing, which was originally scheduled for Friday, June 3rd at Mt. Pleasant Speedway in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan where Epling is currently seventh in points. Then on Saturday, June 4th at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan where he is sitting fourth in the points chase, only 21 points out of the points lead in the tracks' Tinney Automotive UMP Late Models division.
"Unless we can find another motor or someone's back-up car to borrow for one or both nights, we'll unfortunately be taking this weekend off." The 41-year-old added. "It's really unfortunate too. We're chasing after the Sunoco ALM Series points, so we won't miss those shows. But we have a pretty good shot at competing for a couple of Track Championships at Mt. Pleasant and especially at I-96." He ended.
Tentatively, the next event on the 2011 schedule for Epling and crew will be the 17th annual Dirt Late Model Dream back at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio on Friday and Saturday, June 10-11th against some of the best Dirt Late Model drivers and teams in the world.
Epling's #29 Mastersbilt Chassis sporting a Pontiac GTO nose on his UMP Late Model will carry sponsorship decals throughout the 2011 season from; NorthsideTowing.net as well as SJE Trucking, Imaging Solutions, Shift Shop Transmissions, Mike Childers & Sons Excavating, Lane Automotive, Fusion Sign Company, Jeff Smith Home Improvements, NashCar Trailers, Huffy's Marathon, Hedrick Precision Engines, Dowker Racing Engines, M.P.H. Promotions, SJE Motorsports, and Doug Finley Motorsports.

Curry Comes Home Second at Columbus in CRA Action
Michigan drivers Tim Curry(Allegan) Johnny VanDoorn(Coopersville) and Brian Campbell(Wyoming) all looked like they were going to have a great day at Columbus Speedway when they all started the race in the top five. Curry was the fast qualifier. After the inversion he would start third.
In earlier practice sessions all three drives shared time at the top of the speed charts. That all changed when the race began. By lap 32 Johhny VanDoorn would have his race ended with electrical problems. The same bad luck bug would bite Campbell. While leading the race on lap 66 as Campbell's transmission gave way. VanDoorn would finish 24th while Campbell finished 22nd.
The only bright spot for West Michigan was Tim Curry who battled Ross Kenseth(Matt Kenseth Son)for win. Curry and Kenseth each passed each other with 10 laps to go. The final and most important pass was made by Kenseth on lap 123 of the 125 lap event. Curry would have to settle for second.
The race saw many drivers and race cars suffer from the heat. Only ten of the 28 cars would finish on the lead lap.
Of Note: (Cuttlervilles) Jay Niewiek finished 12th and (Newports) Matt Hall finished 21st.

World of Outlaw Sprints Series Invades I-96 Speedway; Jason Sides Wins a Wild "Rumble In Michigan"
World of Outlaw Sprints Series Invades I-96 Speedway; Jason Sides Wins a Wild "Rumble In Michigan"
Lake Odessa, Michigan (Monday, May 30th, 2011): After two consecutive rain outs, the third and final day of the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend Celebration was on tap a very hot and humid day featuring the much anticipated return of the World of Outlaws Sprints Series in the running of "The Rumble In Michigan" on Memorial Day Monday, May 30th. This event was rescheduled due to the rain out back on May 21st.
In the World of Outlaws Sprints Series feature, Bill Rose and Jason Sides led the fastest race cars in the world to the green flag to begin their 30-lap Feature and as they took the green, several cars touched wheels resulting in 20-time series champion Steve Kinser flipping end over end several times before coming to rest in turn one. In total, eight cars were involved and all were ok and most were done for the night. A complete restart was in order and again it would be Rose and Sides leading the now depleted field to the green flag.
Sides grabbed the lead at the start and tried to pull away from the pack when teammates Joey Saldana and Cody Darrah collided in turn four and spun bringing out the caution flag. Both Kasey Kahne Racing teammates restarted at the rear of the field. On the restart, Rose was able to get the jump on Sides in the double file restarts and take over the lead.
On lap 10 Jessica Zemken and Saldana touched wheels sending both around and Saldana over the turn two embankment bringing out a red flag as Saldana was a considerable distance away from the track in the neighboring farm. Saldana was able to return and restart at the back of the pack. On the restart, Rose tried to pull away but Sides kept him in his sights and with a daring slide job coming out of turn four, retook the lead on lap 13.
Four-time series champion Donny Schatz, who started fourth, got around Rose for second and set his sights on Sides. Using lapped traffic, Schatz caught up to Sides and the battle was on for the lead. With just two laps to go, Kraig Kinser, who was involved in the opening accident that took out his father Steve Kinser, flipped wildly in turn two before coming to rest on his wheels bringing out the red flag for the third time. He was ok, but done for the evening.
This set up a green-white-checkered finish for the "Greatest Show on Dirt" as Sides and Schatz started side by side in the double file restart. As the field took the green, Sides got the jump on Schatz when the caution came out again as Tim Shaffer flew off the backstretch bringing out another caution flag and setting up a second G-W-C finish. On the next restart, Sides again got the jump and Defending Series Champion Jason Meyers, the winner of the last two World of Outlaws shows at I-96, also slipped by Schatz for second.
As the field took the white flag, Paul McMahan who was running fifth and was the winner of the series' last race at the Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday, May 28th, touched wheels with another car sending him flipping wildly down the front stretch. Several cars were also involved and the red flag flew once again. Everyone involved was too damaged to continue.
Under World of Outlaws rules, with the restart happening on lap 29, the last two laps must be run under green flag conditions resulting in an overtime situation with the teams going 31 laps. Plus the field would be lined up single file with Sides, Meyers, Craig Dollansky, Schatz, and Fast Qualifier Chad Kemenah the top five.
As the field took the green for the final time, Sides quickly got away from the remainder of the field and as the checkered flag, Sides in his Wetherington Tractor Service Maxim took the hard fought win and the Bartlett, Tennessee would score his third World of Outlaws Sprint Series Feature of the 2011 racing season.
Meyers settled for second while Dollansky, Schatz, and Kemenah were the top five. Shaffer recovered to finish sixth while Danny Smith, Dustin Daggett, Cody Darrah, and Current Series Points Leader Joey Saldana finished off the top 10.
Earlier in the afternoon, Kemenah won the Fast Qualifier Award with a 15.989 which averages out to 112.577mph. Zemken, Meyers, and McMahan Won the Qualifier Heat Races. Rose took the Dash Win to secure the pole position for the Feature while Greg Wilson won the B Main to transfer into the Feature.
The Lane Automotive UMP Modifieds were on hand in support of the World of Outlaws Sprint Series and they were also racing on the big 1/2 mile. A strong 33-car field was on the grounds and after the Qualifier Heat Races and the B Main, a stout 20-car starting line-up lined up. There 20-lap feature was led to Chief Starter Tim Beebe's green flag by Zack Olger and Mark Anderson.
Anderson took the early lead while the rest of the field jockeyed for position. Jacob Poel, who started third, shot by Olger and began chasing down the current points leader and UMP DIRTcar Series Michigan points leader. On lap seven, Poel dove underneath Anderson to grab the lead away. Three laps later Anderson spun in turn four bringing out the caution and while the yellow was out, Poel lost power in his machine and was forced to pit. This gave the lead to Andy Sprague.
Sprague had to deal with B Main winner, two-time track champion Todd Feutz, who started 16th. As the laps counted down, Anderson charged through the pack, overtook Feutz and set his sights on Sprague. In the end however, Sprague had enough of a cushion to keep his lead and the Muskegon, Michigan driver in his Sprague's Auto Parts Chevrolet would go on to win his first feature of the 2011 racing season at I-96.
Anderson settled for second while Feutz, Travis Stemler, and Jeff Sayles finished off the top five. Justin Fleming who started 17th finished sixth as Jared Guinn, Kyle Roberts, John McClure, and Poel completed the top 10.
In preliminary action, Jacob Poel, Jared Guinn, and Mark Anderson all collected Qualifier Heat Race wins while Feutz scored the B Main victory over Fleming, Roberts, Steve Shellenberger, and James Kimmel who all transferred to the feature.

VanDoorn wins at Berlin
Johnny VanDoorn wins Premier Boyne Machine Super Late Model Night
Martin, Lake, Nawrocki, McKinley and Root also win
Marne, MI – After two rainouts in a row, it was a welcomed sight to have cars taking the track. Though it looked gloomy most of the day, as soon as heat races started, the sun was shining on Berlin Raceway. Taking home the trophies on the night were: Bob Martin from the Vintage Racing Organization of America, Dave Lake of the Model Coverall Modifieds, Johnny VanDoorn of the Premier Boyne Machine Super Late Models, Tyler Nawrocki and Chris McKinley of the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinders and Scott Root of the Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks.
The Vintage Racing Organization of America were the first to hit the track for their 25-lap feature; #61 Jason Burrus and #42 Rob Parker were on the front row. Racing was relatively calm and on lap 5, the #43 of Terry Byrne had taken the lead. Bringing out the first caution of the night was the #16 of Samantha Jansen, she spun her vehicle coming out of turn 4. On the restart, the #86 of Bob Martin started on the outside of the leader and was able to grab the lead on the backstretch, but Byrne was able3 to stay with him. The field began racing single file and the car on the move was Jansen who was trying to recover from her spin earlier in the race. She was slowly picking off position, but had a lot of ground to make up with 10 to go. Byrne was never able to get around Martin, so Martin went on the get the win. The rest of the top ten were Byrne, #3 Lou Caposey, Jansen, Parker, #20 Don Deyman, #74 Steve Fuller, #7 Jimmy Lawson, #42 Michael Becker and #61 Jason Burrus.
The Model Coverall Modifieds next, #222 Chris Muyskens and #12 Brian Bergakker lead the field to the green flag of their 30-lap feature. Muyskens took off with the lead as #8 Billy Eppink was challenging Bergakker for second. The #97 of Dave Lake was on the move, he started in 7th position and had taken second on lap 8 and now he had to chase down Muyskens’ 2-second lead. With 10 laps to go, Lake was still not able to cut the lead down and the first race for position was between Bergakker and #22 Billy Shotko for third. Muyskens had caught lapped traffic and that let Lake make up a lot of ground. The first caution on lap 26, Eppink spun off of the backstretch and on the restart, he had spun again coming out of turn 2. When the race was restarted, Lake was able to get to Muyskens’ outside and make the pass for the lead with two laps to go. He was able to drive away from Muyskens and was the winner. Muyskens, Bergakker, Shotko, #76 Ryan Gruppen, #6 Ben Kleis, #80 Curt Filkins, #99 Mark Fliearman, #7 Ryan Hamm and #29 Rob Shoemaker rounded out the top ten.
In the Premier Boyne Machine Super Lates 100-lap race, #44 Tim Steele was on the pole with #5 Alec Carll on his outside. Carll took the lead as the outside lane appeared to be most advantageous. The #61 of John VanDoorn moved up fast, taking the lead on lap 4 after starting 6th. The #20 of Brian Campbell was also on the move, challenging VanDoorn on the outside on lap 7. Everyone was racing each lap like it was the last and they were only 10 laps in to the race. The hard racing resulted in the first caution of the night which involved Carll, #21 Terry VanHaitsma, #15 Justin Ryan, #16 Kelsey Steele, #222 Caleb Bisacky and #44 Tim Steele. Once the field was restarted double-file, VanDoorn got a great start and the field settled in to single file racing. The competition was so tight that on lap 22, the top six were under one second apart. The second caution of the night happened on lap 44 for debris on the frontstretch.
It was another excellent restart by VanDoorn, he managed to put .7 seconds between himself and Campbell, but Campbell just needed a few laps to get up to speed; he was back on VanDoorn’s bumper on lap 52. With 60 laps on the board, the top three broke away from the field and the top three was VanDoorn, Campbell and #55 Chris Anthony. Caution number three came out on lap 65, the #84 Jay Niewiek, #92 Adam Purdy and #32 Gabe Ensing got together in turn 1. The restart was clean and they were back to racing like they were before the caution. With 14 to go, the leader started lapping cars and both VanDoorn and Campbell were expertly maneuvering past. Lap 87 saw the fourth caution, the #92 of Adam Purdy spun low on the backstretch. This left a 13-lap shootout and on the restart, Anthony and Campbell were fighting for second. Anthony got past, but Campbell was not relenting. All the while, VanDoorn was taking off with the lead. Caution was out yet again on lap 89, for K. Steele spinning on the frontstretch. After the restart, VanDoorn proved that there was just not catching him as he won by 1.363 seconds and celebrated with victory donuts on the frontstretch. Campbell had to settle for second and the rest of the top ten were Anthony, #37 Jordan Dahlke, Carll, #23 Chris Koslek, #10 Josh Hobson, #48 Seth Moody, #6 Brandon Hermiller and #11 Nick Bonstell.
Up next were the cars of the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder B division for a 15-lap race with #91 Rob Ream and #44 Nicole DeVos on the front row. DeVos took the lead while #62 Richard Church and #20 Tyler Nawrocki battled for second. Nawrocki prevailed and began to try to cut down DeVos’ 1.5 second lead. The lead was cut down for him on lap 7 as the first caution of the race came out for the #257 Trevor Doornbos and Church. With 8 laps to go, the restart was single file and Nawrocki was able to take the lead from DeVos on the backstretch. DeVos wasn’t able to get back to him as she was holding off #84 Steve Thompson. Nawrocki took the win and DeVos, Thompson, #40 Charlie DeJong, Ream, #99 Troy West, Church, #65 Andy Church and Doornbos completed the top nine.
The #63 of Paul Ritchie was on the pole position for the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder A 15-lap feature with #51 Brad Hastings on his outside. Hastings had the lead as #14 Jason DeVos was rocketing through the field as well as #354 Chris McKinley, #024 Cole Roelofs and #2 Darrell Holtzlander; they were all eager to lead this race. DeVos was scored as the leader on lap 4 and by lap 8, Roelofs was pushing it hard for the lead as his car was sideways going in to turn 1. On lap 9, Roelofs, DeVos and McKinley were three-wide for the lead on the backstretch and they made it stick through turn three. Roelofs to the lead with McKinley and DeVos hot on his trail. With three laps to got McKinley and Roelofs were side by side for the lead; McKinley took it with one to go, but Roelofs was right on his bumper. McKinley was able to hold him off and get the win by .225 seconds. Roelofs got second and the rest of the top nine were Holtzlander, DeVos, #76 Mike Speet, Hastings, #77 Jared Lyzenga, #20 Jackson Walker and Ritchie.
The Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks hit the track next and #47 Don McNabb and #33 Allen Davis lead the field to the green flag for their 25-lap feature and they were the final feature of the night. McNabb established himself as the leader and on lap 5, Allen Davis and #88 Tony Davis were battling for second. Tony Davis cleared him as did #84 Darin Niemi and #1 Brett DeKraker. The #51 Weston Jewett, #6 Brandon Hermiller and #15 Scott Root were all trying hard to get to the front, but they were mired back in traffic. As Tony Davis was pressing McNabb for the lead, the first caution of the race came out as DeKraker, Allen Davis, Jewett and Hermiller were all involved in a wreck in turn 1, this brought out the red flag for clean up. Tony Davis took the lead on the restart, but the #15 of Scott Root was right there to take it away from him the next time by. The #20 of Dave Hull was also trying to mix it up for the lead, but when the second caution of the night came out on lap 17 for Hermiller’s spinning car, the time limit was met for this race and the checkered flag fell on Root. The rest of the top ten were Hull, Tony Davis, Niemi, #18 Mitch Meppelink, Jewett, #F1 Randy Veldman, #9 Matt Holcomb, McNabb and #40 Dave Cutler.
Up next at Berlin Raceway is the Must See Racing Sprint Car Series. They will be joined by the Coors Light Late Models, Engine Pro Super Stocks and Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks. Tickets are $13 for adults and kids 11 and under are free; racing starts at 7:00 p.m.
