Race car to be raffled to raise funds for March of Dimes
Race car to be raffled to raise funds for March of Dimes
The March of Dimes “Race to Save Babies” has local race car driver and builder Dan Riemersma revved up about Saturday activities at the Berlin Raceway in Marne.
Riemersma and his pit crew, which is comprised of family and friends, rebuilt and customized a four-cylinder, 1994 Honda Accord race car that will be raffled off between 7-11 p.m. that day at the raceway.
Proceeds from the raffle will be given to the Grand Rapids-based March of Dimes in memory of 6 1/2-month-old Ashlynn Elizabeth Hamm, the daughter of Ryan and April Hamm of Norton Shores, who died June 2009 from health complications after being born premature, April Hamm said.
“Dan Riemersma, along with family, friends and many sponsors, took the time to build this race-ready car to help raise money for the March of Dimes March for Babies,” wrote Nancy Flaska, Ashlynn’s grandmother, in a letter to The Muskegon Chronicle.
Raffle tickets for the Honda Accord are $5 each or 5 tickets for $20 and can be purchased Friday night at Winston Speedway in Rothbury, Saturday at the Berlin Raceway before the drawing. Raffle ticket holders do not have to be in attendance to win, Hamm said.
“When it’s all done, we hope to raise about $2,500 for the March of Dimes (Team Ashlynn Elizabeth),” Dan Riemersma said.

The raceway also has designated Saturday the March of Dimes 4-cylinder Race Night. For every admission ticket sold that day at the raceway, $1 will be donated to The March of Dimes, according to raceway officials. “That’s (raceway president) Mike Blackmer who did that,” Hamm said. “That was his idea. He’s very generous.”
“We are showing our support to April Hamm and her work with the March of Dimes,” Blackmer said in an e-mail submitted to The Chronicle by Nick Caudle of Berlin Raceway Sales and Promotions. “Sadly, last year (April Hamm) lost her child and she has taken it upon herself to raise awareness and funds for this cause. We are proud to be a part of this and help her in her efforts.”

March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the improvement of the health of babies and prevention of premature birth, birth defects and infant mortality through “research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies’ lives,” according to the organization’s Web site.
Since Ashlynn’s birth, her parents, other family members and friends have collected and donated more than $10,000 to the organization in Ashlynn’s honor.
“March of Dimes-funded research for the inhalant (used by Ashlynn) and without that she would not have been able to take a breathe,” April Hamm said.
“A nurse of Ashlynn asked me if I had known about the March of Dimes,” Hamm said. “And then she explained to me about the inhalant and other things Ashlynn was using in the hospital and how March of Dimes played a big role. ... Once I found that out, I had to give back some how because they gave me my miracle.”
Riemersma said he’s known Ashlynn’s family for years as part of the local racing community. When he learned of the infant’s health challenges and death, he was compelled to do something in her memory and for her family and other children helped through the March of Dimes.
He said he came up with the idea for the raffle, shared his ideas, got donors, including his own car sponsors, and used his own money to get the project done.
“It’s been fun seeing what people say about the car, watching people buy tickets” said Riemersma, who pulled the vehicle on a trailer to various community and race events to display it. “Some people are really shocked that someone came up with the idea.”
Some raffle ticket purchasers have even told Riemersma and Hamm and that if they win the vehicle, they’d consider giving it back to the raffle organizers to host another fundraiser in memory of Ashlynn and to support the March of Dimes.
“For some, it’s just a way to donate money,” said Riemersma.
April Hamm said she’s excited about the fundraiser, the future and the support received from so many people in their efforts to support the March of Dimes in memory of Ashlynn.
“I have my bad days,” April Hamm said of her life since Ashlynn’s death. “I can’t fall asleep, and I cry myself to sleep, like anyone would ... I just want to make her proud. … I miss her a lot, but I still want to do good for her and help other babies.”

The yard sale will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Calvin Church, 973 W. Norton, with proceeds going to the JDRF.
It’s an effort Cavender knows firsthand will make a difference, she said. She is the mother of a 31-year-old daughter who has been a diabetic since age 10 and benefited from diabetes research.
Cavender became involved with JDRF soon after her daughter was diagnosed and estimates she’s helped to raise awareness of diabetes and the foundation and about $20,000 for research efforts funded by the organization.
“I just want them to find a cure,” Cavender said on behalf of her daughter and others living with diabetes.
“I wear my Walk-for-a-Cure T-shirt,” Cavender said. When folks see her in the shirt, they share their stories. “I’m amazed at how many kids are diagnosed, to me it’s very scary. ... There are so many kids.”
Since retiring as a local school teacher five years ago, Cavender said she has poured herself into raising funds and support for the foundation and its efforts.
“My husband said I’m obsessive,” she said with a laugh. “But, somebody’s got to do this, and I can, so I am.”

VanDoorn Press Release
VanDoorn Notches Second Champion Racing Association Win at Toledo
Johnny VanDoorn’s favorite race track on the Champion Racing Association schedule is the Toledo Speedway. VanDoorn likes the speed and the banking of the big half mile. On Friday the 13th, VanDoorn did not find any of the bad racing luck he’s found so far in the 2010 season. Instead, he found Victory Lane for the second time this season in his #61 CRA car and his fourth win overall.
VanDoorn’s day did not start off the way the 2009 CRA Champion had hoped. VanDoorn reported to the team after his first run during the hour long practice session that the car was not good at all. The team went to work to make adjustments to get the car handling to VanDoorn’s liking. After his next run, VanDoorn said they went the right direction with the changes but he felt they needed to go a little further to make the car better. The team made a couple more changes and bolted on a set of sticker tires for a mock qualifying run. VanDoorn came on the radio and said the car was the best it had been all day. With that, the team prepped the car for qualifying.
VanDoorn went out 16th out of the 25 cars to take time. Johnny ran a lap of 15.722 seconds, which was good enough for third. Johnny holds the track record for the CRA cars at Toledo and was not happy with timing in third. “The only bright side of qualifying third is they drew a three for the inversion, so we will start on the pole. Otherwise, I’m not real happy with that time. We still have some work to do for the race” VanDoorn said.
VanDoorn and Scott Hantz led the field to green and Johnny led the first two laps and then was past by fast qualifier Joey Miller. Johnny would settle into second spot before giving way to Scott Hantz. Johnny reported to the team that the car was bottoming out a bit and that once the air pressures built up, the car was better. Johnny rode in third spot right behind Hantz. When Hantz made his move on Joey Miller, VanDoorn followed right behind him taking over second place on lap 63. He would not stay there long has he got the nose of the #61 under Hantz on lap 65 and finally retook the lead. Johnny would open up a commanding lead working his way through traffic and went on to win by almost two seconds.
After the win, VanDoorn was happy with the end result. “We struggled earlier today. But we came together as a team and made the car better. It still was not that great of a car-it did not feel like the tires were in the track. It felt like I was skating around. But we needed this win. Wins like tonight and last week with the outlaw car are what we should be doing every week. I really feel that our team is getting stronger at the right time” VanDoorn said. And the heat of the day was another obstacle the team had to overcome. “As hot as it was today, I really have to thank my team for the work they put in. Not only today, but all week. We had a lot of work to do after wrecking on the last lap at Anderson. And we had some work to do today as well. That’s why this win feels so good-to reward all of us for the hard work we put into this deal” VanDoorn added.
VanDoorn and his Kaos Motorsports team will be traveling to the Columbus Speedway on August 28 for their next CRA race.

Berlin Raceway Storyline: August 14th
Wiersma, Tillema, and Bergakker All Take Checkers
Marne, MI-The sun was out and so were the fans, as Berlin Raceway debuted “Car Load” night this past Saturday night. The Fall Shootout presented by General Electric was action packed with a 75 lap Super Stock feature; Modifieds and Pro Stocks also took the track. Winners for the night included #99 Brian Bergakker-Modifieds, #76 Brian Tillema- Pro Stocks, and #1 Brian Wiersma- Super Stocks.
The Model Coverall Modifieds were the first feature of the evening. Starting on front row were #8 Billy Eppink and #76 Ryan Gruppen. Eppink jumped out in front early, but a three car wide pass with Gruppen and #78 Travis Eddy left Eppink in third on lap 2; Eddy emerged as the new leader. The #99 car of Brian Bergakker was also making his way to the front, by lap Bergakker was on the heels of Eddy. On lap 17, Bergakker passed Eddy underneath on the frontstretch to move ahead of the pack. Mike Bursley in the #97 was making a move until the first yellow was thrown. On lap 24 it appeared as though the #6 of Ben Kleis got into Gruppen as he hit the wall in turn 3. Out of the restart Bursley moved into third behind Bergakker and Eddy. A second spin out on the backstretch with Eppink would see Bursley move into second on lap 25. Another caution would halt the racing action as #68 Randy DeBoer went off the backstretch, out of the restart Bergakker and Bursley would begin their battle. Bursley would be on Bergakker’s heels the remainder of the race, but just didn’t have enough to pass. Bergakker would take the checker followed by Bursley, Eddy, #44 Jordan Dahlke, and Eppink.
Up next were the Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks, #20 Dave Hull and #18 Mitch Meppelink started on the start/finish line. Two complete restarts were necessary before a single lap was recorded. The first yellow came out for #7 Kevin DeGood as he spun out, and once again for DeGood and #40 Dave Cutler who went off the backstretch. When the race finally resumed, Hull sped off to a fast lead. The real battle was with #51 Weston Jewett and #76 Brian Tillema, Jewett held Tillema off until lap 14 when he passed Jewett on the inside lane on the frontstretch. Another caution would come out #X spun out on the frontstretch. Tillema took advantage of the restart as he passed Hull on lap 21, but Hull would not go without a fight. The two would flip flop position until Tillema pulled ahead with 6 to go. Tillema would take the check flag for sixth time this season. Hull, #6 Brandon Hermiller, Jewett, and #101 Lauren Bush rounded out the top 5 spots.
The grand finale of the night was a 75 lap feature with the Engine Pro Super Stocks. Bob Bliss in the #6 and #76 Warren Speet started on front row. Speet had an early lead with Bliss and #11 Josh Slade following close by. The first of many cautions came early on lap 6, the #16 car of Kelsey Steele spun out on the backstretch. Out of the restart #5 Ray VanAllsburg moved in behind the leader Speet; Bliss brought out the yellow as debris fell from his car on lap 12. Dave Lake in the #55 car passed VanAllsburg, but Lake would spin out on lap 20. That’s when four time feature winner #77 Andrew Nylaan made his move, moving past VanAllsburg for third, VanAllsburg would once again get passed by a Nylaan as #3 Travis Nylaan moved into fourth on lap 24. VanAllsburg would regain his position however as a yellow came out for #95 Curt Filkins and Steele spun out. The double file restart would see VanAllsburg shoot past Andrew Nylaan. The two would battle for the third place position until lap 32 when Nylaan finally pulled away. Filkins would again bring out a yellow flag for a spin, but the restart would be favor Nylaan, as he became the new leader on lap 33. Denny Anderson in the #18 car and #3 Nylaan were on #77 Nylaan’s heels, Anderson past #77 Nylaan going into lap 50, #77 Nylaan continued to drop back as #3 Nylaan moved into second on lap 54. The next 10 laps had a series of four cautions. One of the more critical cautions happened on lap 64. Speet brought out the red flag for going off the backstretch and into the wall, the driver was not seriously injured, but Speet was done for the night. Nate Walton in the #66 was also a part of the caution and would not return. On lap 66 the leader Anderson would also go off the back stretch. At that moment that Travis Nylaan would become the new leader, followed closely by #23 Chris Koslek. The two would battle it out to the end, going into lap 75 rounding into turn 4, Koslek got into #3 Nylaan; costing #3 Nylaan the first victory of this career. Brian Wiersma in the #1 car sped past the two and took the check flag. #50 Justin Regnerus finished second, VanAllsburg, and #3Nylaan and Steele finished in the top 5.

Brian Tillema wins Berlin Raceway-best sixth Pro Stocks feature race of the season
Brian Tillema wins Berlin Raceway-best sixth Pro Stocks feature race of the season

The Grand Rapids Press
MARNE -- The Pro Stocks division largely has been dominated by two drivers this season at Berlin Raceway.
If Weston Jewett hasn’t been winning races, Brian Tillema often has taken the checkered flag.
It took Tillema a while to make his way up front, but the Byron Center driver held off Dave Hull and Brandon Hermiller to pick up his sixth victory of the season Saturday night.
Tillema beat Hull by .21 seconds and Hermiller by .32 for the win. Tillema, who has won three consecutive Pro Stocks titles, now has six victories to Jewett’s five, and a slight edge in the points standings. Jewett finished the race in fourth place.
“You know, people might get sick of us winning a lot, but man, was that race exciting,” Tillema said. “I have to thank Dave Hull for giving me a great race.”
Hull came down the make-ready chute and gave Tillema a thumbs-up sign, even though Hull missed out on his first feature win of the season. Hull, who hails from Cedar Springs, never has won a championship at Berlin, with his high finish of fifth coming last year.
Tillema led Jewett by two points in the standings entering Saturday. Tillema and Jewett have won 11 of the 12 Pro Stocks races, with Ken Smith Jr. capturing the other.
“The caution flags coming out helped a lot, but it put me outside of Dave, and I’m nowhere near as good when I’m outside,” said Tillema, who has won 19 feature races at Berlin in four years to go with three consecutive Pro Stocks titles (2007-09).
“This is the first time I’ve battled with Dave like this. I’ve had a similar race this year with Weston and I lost out on that one, so it’s nice to get this back.”
With the Pro Stocks and Super Stocks points standings close entering Saturday -- Dave Lake and Travis Nylaan were tied for the Super Stock point standings before Saturday -- the final weeks are shaping up to be interesting.
Tillema said he doesn’t pay attention to points, but is aware now he has the upper hand.
“It really isn’t a breather. I don’t really race for points,” Tillema said. “Whether we’re behind by 50 points or ahead by 50 points, I’m racing the same no matter what.”
Tillema passed Jewett for second place on lap 14 of the 30-lap feature. He overtook Hull on the 21st lap on the front stretch. Hull and Tillema jockeyed for position until Tillema passed Hull with six laps to go and stayed in the lead.
THE BUZZ
The “B” feature: It was a welcome back to victory lane for Brian Bergakker. Overcoming two caution flags in the final laps, Brian Bergakker overtook Mike Bursley and Travis Eddy to post his third victory of the season during the 35-lap Modified event, one of three features offered Saturday night by Berlin. Bergakker’s win extended his lead in the point standings over Billy Shotko and Eddy. Bergakker led by 16 points entering Saturday.
Couldn’t quite get started: It was not a good night for Pro Stocks driver Kevin DeGood, who spun out on the south turn before the Pro Stocks race even completed its first lap. When the green flag came out again, he got in a tangle with Dave Cutler, resulting in another spinout. DeGood, who was 22nd in the points standings entering Saturday, dropped out of the race.
Up next: It is 4 Cylinder night at the track Saturday, featured on a program that also includes Late Model, Super Stocks and Pro Stocks features.
