Thank you for your Thoughts and Prayers
This past Tuesday my father-in-law (Lawrence Falbe) passed away. His funeral was today. It is not something I made public on this website but word travels fast when you have great friends. My wife Julie and I would like to say thank you to the drivers, and fans of the West Michigan Racing Community along with the Oakridge Football Family for their thoughts and prayers during this tough time. It was greatly appreciated.

Jeep VanWormer Wins at Brownstown

UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Night 1: Jeep Van Wormer Blisters Brownstown
Pinconning, Mich., star opens "Hell Tour" with a victory in Indiana
Brownstown, Ind. - June 11, 2009 - To say Jeep Van Wormer was happy with his win during the opening night of the 22nd UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals on Thursday night is an understatement.
The popular Michigan native kicked off The Hell Tour at quarter-mile Brownstown Speedway by holding off several of Dirt Late Model racing's toughest racers to pick up the checkered flag.
"It just feels good to go out there and get a win back under our belt after starting out really well at the beginning of the year," said Van Wormer, who topped a 44-car field. "I can't say enough about my crew chief, Joe, and how the crew did tonight. We're just totally pumped."
Van Wormer withstood spirited charges from a stout field of UMP DIRTcar Late Model competitors throughout the 40-lap contest. However, runner-up Brian Birkhofer, who has been strong all season, was light at the scales in the post-race inspection, dropping him off the podium. That moved defending Hell Tour champion Dennis Erb Jr. to second with 2008 World of Outlaws Late Model Series Champion Darrell Lanigan rounding out the Top 3.
"Birkhofer has been untouchable lately, so to go and beat him really jumpstarts our confidence," an enthusiastic Van Wormer said before Birkhofer was disqualified. "It feels pretty good."
A familiar face to UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals competition positioned himself well for a title defense. Two-time and defending Summer Nationals champion Erb climbed from a ninth-place starting spot to third within the first four laps of competition, eventually being credited with the runner-up position.
"If there would have been a little more traction down there - on the low side of the track - I think we would have been good but, a lot of people were running the bottom and burned it up," Erb said.
Erb knows as well that UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals championships are not earned in one night. "We're pretty prepared," Erb said. "We've been trying things out earlier in the year so hopefully things will go smooth for us and we'll be there at the end."
Forty-four UMP DIRTcar Late Models invaded the Jackson County Fair Grounds to kick off the 22nd UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour.
Group qualifying saw home state driver Chad Stapleton, former UMP DIRTcar Summer Nationals Champion Kevin Weaver, Muscatine, Iowa, driver Brian Birkhofer, and Illinois standout Rodney Melvin earn quick time honors for their respective groups.
Heat Races were captured by Billy Moyer, eventual winner Jeep VanWormer, Brian Birkhofer and Rodney Melvin.

Brian Campbell wins Rowdy Busch 125
Scott Thomas and Kelsey Steele also victorious
Marne, MI—Over 5,000 fans were on hand to witness a thrilling night at Berlin Raceway. Kelsey Steele scored her second win of the season in the Young Guns division while Scott Thomas got his first win of the season in the Coors Light Late Models; winning the CRA Super Series Rowdy Busch 125 was Brian Campbell.
The Young Guns took the track first; #32 Gabe Ensing was slotted to start on the pole position, but his wreck in the heat race took him out of contention. #16 Kelsey Steele moved up to take his space next to #19 Dalton Haney. From the drop of the green flag, Steele took off with the lead and by halfway, had put almost four seconds between herself and Haney. Haney had his hands full with #6 Brandon Hermiller who took second place from him on lap 11. Hermiller began to catch Steele, but he ran out of time. Steele got her second win of the season after leading all of the laps and finishing behind her was Hermiller, Haney, #18 Mitch Meppelink, #101 Lauren Bush and Ensing.
The Coors Light Late Models were up next for their 100-lap feature, #00 Ryan Meldrum and #82 Tom Thomas were on the front row. T. Thomas was the early leader and the first caution of the night came out on lap 8; Meldrum spin in turn 2 after a battle for second with the #19 of Nick Shotko. The #12 of Tim DeVos and #10 of Johnny Benson were coming to the front fast and by lap 24, leader Thomas began lapping cars. After a caution on lap 27, the double file restart bunched the field back up. Before that lap was completed, caution was out again; N. Shotko and #27 Billy Shotko spun while racing hard for second place. Meanwhile the #28 of Scott Thomas was slowly catching leader T. Thomas and on lap 55, using a slower car as a pick, S. Thomas took the lead and let T. Thomas fall in to DeVos’ clutches. DeVos overtook T. Thomas on lap 66 while S. Thomas had stretched his lead out to just over 3 seconds; just 10 cars remained on the lead lap. With 10 to go, DeVos was cutting in to S. Thomas’ lead, but he was unable to catch him. Scott Thomas took his first win of the season in dominating fashion, lapping all by 6 cars. The rest of the top ten were DeVos, #32 Ross Meeuwsen, T. Thomas, #55 Chris Anthony, #10 Johnny Benson, #101 Joe Bush, #1 Randy Sweet, #21 Terry VanHaitsma and N. Shotko.
The finale of the night was the CRA Super Series Rowdy Busch 125 and on the front were the cars of #21 Terry VanHaitsma and #155 Chris Anthony. Anthony took off with the lead and just as the field started lap two, caution was out. An attempt at going three-wide did not work and #51 Alec Carll, who was on the outside, made contact with another car which sent his machine into the wall and he slide on his side to the middle of turns 1 and 2. Once the cars were restarted, #23 Chris Koslek and #22 Chris Eggleston scooted past #51 Kyle Busch and they went after VanHaitsma for second and the trio found themselves entrenched in a battle on lap 18. Just two laps later, caution was out for an incident involving #2 Josh Slade and #90 Becca Kasten; this let the field catch up to leader Anthony who was checking out. Eggleston was all over VanHaitsma on the restart and that let Anthony drive away from the field again. Eggleston was on the move and had reeled in the leader once he got past VanHaistma and he was challenging for the lead on lap 50 and took it one lap later. The cars settled in to a long green flag run and the car to watch was the #20 of Brian Campbell. On lap 86, Campbell had made his way up to second by passing #72 Scott Hantz on the outside at the start/finish line. It didn’t take long for Campbell to catch and passes Eggleston for the lead and then he started pulling away from the field. The final caution of the night happened with 10 laps to go, Hantz spun on the backstretch. On the restart, the battle for fourth got rowdy when VanHaitsma, Hantz and Busch went three-wide in turn one and made it work. There was no catching Campbell, though. He dominated the last part of the race and won by 2.219 seconds. The rest of the top ten were Koslek, Eggleston, VanHaitsma, Busch, Hantz, VanDoorn, Kasten, Anthony and #37 Jordan Dahlke.
Up next at Berlin Raceway is the Open Wheel Spectacular featuring the ISMA SuperModified with Johnny Benson, Jr., USAC/WOMS Midgets and the Engine Pro Super Stocks. Westfall Wins at Waynesfield
The Michigan Traditional Sprint Series group would do battle with the Waynesfield regulars in non-wing sprint action to finish off the nights racing program. 31 Cars would show up to compete for their chance at the $1000. Matt Westfall lives in Ohio and regularly competes at Waynesfield. He was not about to let an outsider come in and take "his" money! Kyle Simon always runs well at Waynesfield and tonights inversion draw would start him on the pole of the feature event. Simon would grab the lead as the green flag waved and it began to look as thou Simon might get his 1st win of this season at Waynesfield. Matt Westfall had to start 8th and soon found out that the top side of the track was to his liking. Westfall had little trouble making his way to the front because he was running higher than anyone else on the track and had no one in his line to slow him down. Within 5 laps Westfall has driven around 6 other cars and was challenging Simon for the point. Westfall was in a league of his own as he easily cleared Simon and quickly pulled away from the rest of the field. Westfall would dominate the race and score his 2nd win of this year at Waynesfield. Kyle Simon would finish in 2nd but had his hands full holding off a hard charging Joss Maffet who started the race deep in the pack. The fans and racers were again impressed with rookie Todd Keen as he spent the majority of the race battling in the top 4 positions. Keen faded into the 8th position during the last few laps. Cub Burden had the most impressive drive of the night to finish 9th after winning the 1st B-main and starting the feature clear back in 17th spot. Brandon Ferguson was the winner of B-main #2. Sprint heat winners were Kyle "the kid" Conaway, Dustin Smith, Mike Dunlap, and Kyle Simon.

Todd Cowan Press Release: June 8th
For Immediate Release:
6-8-09 GRAND RAPIDS, MI.
Saturday June 6th found Todd Cowan racing the #16 Action Mold & Machining UMP modified racecar at the Thunderbird Raceway in Muskegon, MI. The night found 22 cars vying for the prize of becoming the Paul Bouwman Memorial race winner. Todd competed in the first of 3 heat races for the UMP Modifieds. Todd started on the outside of the first row next to fellow Grand Rapids, MI. driver and Stealth chassis pilot Brian Roark. Roark let the field to green but by turn one Todd had the lead and never looked back. Todd led the entire heat race and won easily over a stellar field of cars including last years track and state champion in the division. The feature had Todd starting 8th in the 22 car starting order. Shortly after the drop of the green Todd slowed to miss two cars tangling. During this sequence another driver hit Todd’s rear bumper spinning him around in front of most of the 22 car field. The #16 car got struck many times by cars trying to miss. Though Todd and the #16 Action Mold & Machining car were able to continue after the crash the performance was gone from the car due to damage. Todd limped the car home to a 17th place finish in the feature. When asked about the night of racing Todd had this to say; “I was pleased with the performance of the car. It is always great to win a race and I know we are going to win some more races this year. I just wish I could have raced with everyone in the feature; I guess that’s just how racing is sometimes.”
Todd will be back in competition in the #16 Action Mold and Machining car on June 20th. Todd was scheduled to race on June 13th but there has been a schedule change. Check http://www.todd.racesontheweb.com/ for all Todd Cowan racing news and schedules.
