Poel Dominates Farmer City Raceway for Sixth DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals Victory of 2014

By Jordan Morris

FARMER CITY, Ill. — July 11, 2014 — Jacob Poel captured his sixth victory of the 2014 DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals Friday night at Farmer City Raceway in dominating fashion as he led flag-to-flag en route to securing the $1,000 payday.

Poel, who last won Sunday night at Tri-State Speedway, started the 25-lap feature event on the outside of pole-sitter Nick Allen. Poel rocketed around Allen on the start of the race as he captured the lead on the opening lap.

Poel escaped to an early lead as second-place Allen came under fire from Lance Dehm, who started the feature in third position and grabbed second-place with ease as Allen faded through the field.

Dehm tried to muscle around Poel after two cautions slowed the field around the halfway point of the race, but the leader turned back the challenge from Dehm, as second place came under fire from Jeff Curl, who was charging through the field. Dehm and Curl battled side-by-side for a couple of laps before Curl cleared Dehm and set his sights on the leader.

Poel proved to be too strong in the final three laps as he never allowed Curl to close in for the lead. Poel dominated the feature event, leading every lap without facing a serious challenge for the $1,000 checkered flag at Farmer City Raceway.

“I can’t say enough about this car,” said the six-time winner in 2014 who drives a Rocket Chassis racecar. “It’s been a great car for me, and Farmer City has been a great track for us today and I’m glad to take home another one.”

With just six races remaining in the 2014 DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals, Mike Harrison clings to an 11 point lead over Jacob Poel in the championship standings.

SPRING LAKE – Jacob Poel has been one of the nation’s top Modified drivers in recent years after winning 21 feature races in each of the past three seasons.
It turned out that race fans hadn’t seen anything yet. Poel almost has 21 wins this season, and the summer isn’t even to the halfway point.
“We have won 21 races in each of the last three years, and that was racing all the way into mid-October,” said Poel, of Spring Lake. “We are in early July, and with 19 wins, that’s over and above anything that I have had at this point in time.”
jacobpoel2.jpgJacob Poel, along with girlfriend Kari Beutler, their oldest son Leland and youngest son Blaine celebrate one of Poel's 19 wins this season.
Poel, who has made about 30 starts this season, has won features at 12 different tracks across the Midwest, including six at the I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa. He heated up in April, notching four straight wins, including victories at Quincy Raceways in Illinois and I-96, followed by back-to-back wins at Farmers City Raceway in Illinois. He has been rolling since.
So why has Poel been better than ever this season? He pointed to three things.
“This is my fourth year with the same chassis manufacturer, so the last few years I’ve have had time to get the set-up figured out,” Poel said. “Last year we had some engine troubles. This year we have a different engine builder, and they have been doing really good for us. In addition to that, we have received some sponsorship help from Gilboe’s Lock and Safe, and we have been able to step up our traveling program. So it’s between those three things and me keeping my head on my shoulders.”
Poel was ranked No. 3 in last week’s UMP DIRTcar Modified National Championship point standings, so he is focused on a national title. He also would love to win the championship in the Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals traveling series. It offers a grueling 30-race schedule that is contested across seven states from June 7-through-July 19. Poel has won five of those races, including last Sunday’s event at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt, Ind.
A hot streak like this could go to a driver’s head, but not Poel’s. Poel said he and crewman, Derrick Thibert of Ludington, invest between 12-to-15 hours of prep time into his No. 82 Modified before each race.
“My confidence level is high, but I stay level headed wherever we go,” Poel said. “These big races, there is always somebody who is just as good or better than you. You can’t go into a race thinking you’re better because you’re going to underestimate somebody someday, and they will have you beat.
“We know what we need to do to win. But we have to make sure we cross our T’s and dot our I’s and have the car the way it needs to be. I try to pay attention to what the track is like. I spend time watching the competitors, trying to figure out where their weak spots are, and then try to make my car the strongest where they are the weakest.”
Poel has three Summer National races coming up this weekend, including Friday’s event Farmer’s City Raceway, followed by races Saturday at Fairbury Speedway in Fairbury, Ill., and Sunday’s main at Vermillion Co-Speedway in Danville, Ill.

Poel Claims Fifth Win of 2014 DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals at Tri-State Speedway

Poel Claims Fifth Win of 2014 DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals at Tri-State Speedway

By Jordan Morris
HAUBSTADT, Ind. — July 6, 2014 — Bumping and banging was common Sunday night at Tri-State Speedway as Jacob Poel outdueled Zach Fair and Tyler Nicely to claim his fifth DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals victory of season.

Defending champion Mike Harrison captured the pole-position for the 25-lap feature event, with Poel starting to his outside. The two front-row starters remained side-by-side as they battled for the lead on the opening two circuits, with Poel barely edging Harrison to lead both laps.

Harrison secured the top spot exiting turn two on the third lap, sliding right in front of Poel and making contact as he cleared the Michigan native. Harrison controlled the lead for the next 14 laps, keeping his car glued to the bottom of the race track while holding off the high-line running Poel.

Harrison built an early lead and was on his way to his seventh victory of the season, until his car broke entering turn one on lap 17, ending his night early and handing the lead back to Poel.
Zach Fair and a hard-charging Tyler Nicely kept the new leader from easily coasting to his fifth win of the season, as they challenged Poel for the lead in almost every corner. Fair took multiple shots at the leader, coming just short of grabbing the lead, before being bumped out of the way for second by Nicely.

Nicely, after clearing Fair, dove his car to the inside of Poel to challenge for the lead with just two laps to go. The two leaders made contact exiting turn four to take the white-flag as Nicely was just inches from clearing Poel for the lead. Nicely tried everything he could to jar the lead from Poel on the final lap, but the leader was too strong on the outside, leading the races final nine laps to claim the $1,000 checkered flag at Tri-State Speedway.
