Berlin Raceway Storyline: July 18th

Anthony and Anderson get their first wins of the season

Regnerus and Ensing add to win totals

Marne, MI-- It was a perfect night for racing at Berlin Raceway and the fans on hand were treated to an action-packed night. Coors Light Late Model Driver Chris Anthony and Engine Pro Super Stock driver Denny Anderson broke in to Victory Lane for the first time this season while Kerkstra Services Pro Stock driver Justin Regnerus and Young Gun driver Gabe Ensing got their fourth and third wins, respectively.

The first division to hit the track was the 30-lap Engine Pro Super Stock with #15 Mat McClarren and #12 Josh Slade on the front row. On the start, McClarren was falling back and Slade and 31 Brian Wiersma were out front. Lap two saw the first caution of the night; the #13 of James Haney blew up coming across the start/finish line. After a red flag for clean-up, the race resumed with Slade leading the pack, but he was overtaken by Wiersma on lap 6. Caution was out again for the spinning car of #8 Billy Eppink on lap 13. The #18 of Denny Anderson went to the point on the restart and started to pull away, but by lap 21, Wiersma started to reel him in and dove to the inside going in to turn 1. Anderson was strong on the outside and held him off. On lap 23, the pair was side by side at the start/finish line, but Wiersma was unable to get around him. They crossed the line just .071 seconds apart and Anderson getting his first win of the season. Wiersma, #5 Ray VanAllsburg, #55 Dave Lake, #77 Andrew Nylaan, #10 Bob Spencer, #51 Justin Ryan, #26 Chris Muyskens, #98 Bob Bliss and McClarren.

Up next were the cars of the Young Gun division; #32 Gabe Ensing and #6 Brandon Hermiller led the field to the green flag. On the start, Hermiller fell back to third and Ensing took off with the lead. After a few laps, Hermiller caught the #16 of Kelsey Steele to challenge her for second. With five laps to go, Ensing was enjoying a 1.5 second lead, but with one lap to go, caution was out for the #18 of Mitch Meppelink. The green and white flew together and Ensing held on for the final lap to get his third win of the season. The rest of the finishing order was Steele, Hermiller, #101 Lauren Bush, Meppelink and #19 Dalton Haney.

The #1 of Randy Sweet started the 60-lap Coors Light Late Model feature on the pole with #6 Dave Zagaiski on his outside and before a lap was completed, there was trouble on the track. Sweet spun and collected #32 Ross Meeuwsen. Since the race was not started, Sweet got his spot back and took off with the lead. Not far behind him was the #55 of Chris Anthony; he was side by side with Sweet on lap 4 and grabbed the lead on the backstretch. Once he had the lead, he pulled away from the field. The car to watch was the fast qualifier, #21 Terry VanHaitsma. He was coming through the field in a hurry; up to 4th on lap 10 and just seven laps later, he was reeling in Zagaiski for second. On lap 26, Sweet and #82 Tom Thomas were beating and banging for fourth, Thomas took it just as VanHaitsma caught Zagaiski. The first caution of the night came out on lap 39 when VanHaistma spun coming out of turn 4. On the restart, Anthony took off again while #12 Tim DeVos and Thomas battled for second. With ten laps to go, the top 6 were single-file and spread out and there was no catching Anthony, he was absolutely dominant, taking his first win of the season by 2.883 seconds. The rest of the top ten were T. Thomas, #27 Billy Shotko, DeVos, #28 Scott Thomas, #19 Nick Shotko, VanHaitsma, Sweet, #4 Joel Baker and #71 Kyle Ballard.

The Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks provided the finale with their 25-lap feature with #33 Jerry Groeneveld and #20 Dave Hull leading the field. Hull took off with the lead and the rest of the field was stacking up behind Groeneveld, #50 Justin Regnerus, #76 Brian Tillema and #76 Ryan Gruppen were all trying to get around him. The first caution of the race came out on lap 12 after the Gruppen and #7 Kevin DeGood wrecked on the frontstretch. After a red flag for clean-up, the race resumed and Hull continued to lead, but lurking behind him were the cars of Tillema and Regnerus. With five laps to go, Tillema took the lead, but Regnerus was right on his bumper. He pulled even with Tillema on lap 22 and cleared him on lap 23. Tillema made a last lap charge on the outside, but Regnerus held him off to get his fourth win of the season by .117 seconds over Tillema. Completing the top ten were Hull, Groeneveld, #51 Weston Jewett, #88 Tony Davis, #78 Will Olmsted, #36 Ken Smith, Jr., 340 Dave Cutler and #00 Dennis Mann.

Next Saturday, July 25, the ARCA RE/MAX Series will return to Berlin Raceway for the Wolverine Power Systems 200 presented by Generac. They will be going for 200 laps and will be joined by the Kerkstra Services Pro Stock division. Big V - Condition Update

(July 13) - Monday: 9:25 AM - Just had a long conversation with Verwayne. He's still at Sparrow in Coronary Care and on visitor restrictions. The fever that caused him the initial problem is down, but the heart infection is still not under control. He's undergoing several tests today to determine the amount and types of damage that has been done. At this point the doctors are telling him they expect him to be undergoing almost constant care for the next several weeks. While this may sound like bad news, we all know that he's stubborn and will find some way to escape the asylum at some point. V appreciates all of your comments, I read them all to him. I think he will be trying to make a few phone calls out, but the hospital staff is insisting that he turn of his phone most of the time. He has no way to check his email or update sites, etc. - LW

Johnn VanDoorn Fourth at Plymouth

David Stremme Triumphant at Summer Championship 200

Plymouth, IN (July 12, 2009) – David Stremme started on the pole and led the first 100 laps of the CRA Super Series Summer Championship 200 Presented by Crown RV & Boat Cleaner at Plymouth Speedway Sunday night. Restarting back in the pack after choosing to change tires at the halfway break, Stremme worked his way back to the front and took the lead after 50 laps and held on to win at his home track. Jack Landis finished second holding off a hard charging Aaron Pierce who finished beside Landis, missing second by .030 seconds, just inches. Johnny Van Doorn finished fourth, with Jason Dietsch fifth.

"It was fun racing here, seeing a lot of people, racing at Plymouth Speedway." Stremme stated. "It was fun for everybody, there was a lot of passing, and it was entertaining for the fans. And I got my third CRA Super Series win."

Jason Shively set fast time in qualifying taking the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier Award, he then drew a five for the invert putting Stremme on the pole. From his starting position, Stremme ran out to a safe lead, while the fight for second on back with first JR Roahrig, then Jack Landis and finally Eddie Hoffman racing in second. At the halfway break, Stremme led by .703 seconds with Hoffman nearly catching him.

By taking no tires, Landis restarted the second half the race out front, with Roahrig and Scott Hantz right behind him. Hantz wasted no time getting second, racing to get beside Landis, but never able to get past while Stremme and Hoffman moved through the field. Hantz and Hoffman fought for third bouncing off each other several times, ending when Hoffman forced Hantz high in four and Hantz hitting the wall hard. Hoffman came in and lost a lap in the pits, then upon exiting the pits incorrectly he was accessed a stop and go penalty which cost him another lap in the pits.

Stremme worked his way past Landis on the 150th lap to take the lead for good. As the laps wound down, Aaron Pierce made a late charge moving up quickly. "I saved my tires and car for the end, but waited just a little too long." Pierce stated. Moving into third, Pierce looked to be able to challenge, but a caution with 3 laps to go when Boris Jurkovic got caught up and spun when he checked up for a slower car and others did not in heavy traffic, gave the advantage to Landis again. Despite being able to get beside Landis, Pierce could not get past him in the three laps and finished third.

Jurkovic started the day without a car after his had mechanical issues during the open practice on Saturday. Steve Campbell loaned his car to Jurkovic. Despite driving an unfamiliar car, Jurkovic started 20th, worked his way into the Top 5 and then had his spin, finishing 15th. For his move through the field Jurkovic earned the ARP Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award. Tyler Roahrig moved up 14 positions to earn the Lane Automotive /ISKY Racing Cams Hard Charger Award, and a Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Award. Jason Dietsch took the other Hoosier Racing Tire Award. Nick Lay won the K&N Filters Rookie of the Race Award.
Joe Beaver turned the fastest lap of the 15 CRA Street Stock drivers that broke the track record and drew a 12 for the invert putting Angola driver Robbie Henderson on the pole. Henderson made the best of it leading every lap to win his first CRA Street Stock race. South Bend driver Randy Pressler worked to pass Henderson every lap, and did get by once only to have a car spin on the same lap, causing a restart, with the field reverting back to the previous laps line-up putting Henderson back into the lead. Pressler finished second, with Rick Erwin third, Chad Poorman fourth and Larry Matillo fifth.

"I have been racing for 10 years and this is my biggest win ever." Henderson said. "Those guys raced me clean, I was real loose there at the end, but they did not touch me, a great group of drivers to race with."

Mark Mason set fast time in Vore’s Welding & Steel CRA FWD Compact action, but his time was disallowed following post-qualifying inspection. Starting on the tail, Mason moved up through the field to take the lead on the 17th lap, building a sizable lead. Rookie contender Jeff Williams took the early lead and lead until Mason took over. Williams finished second, holding off a hard charging PeeWee Warren, Tim Dilg was fourth and Blain Miller moved from the last row to finish fifth.

"The lanes just opened up for me." Mason commented. "Sometimes they do and sometimes they don't, and today they did. We had a little mishap in qualifying and that was just more incentive to come out and win!"

The next CRA Super Series event is Redbud 300 presented by Great Deals Magazine at Anderson Speedway on Monday, July 27th. The best of the CRA Super Series will be racing in this historic race with Kyle Busch making his first appearance at the famed high banks of Anderson where fans remember the days when top stars were racing through Anderson on a yearly basis, with iconic drivers like Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin, Dick Trickle, the late Alan Kulwicki, Bob Senneker, Mike Eddy, Ted Musgrave, Johnny Benson, Gary St. Amant and many others. Berlin Raceway Storyline: July 11th

Tom Thomas wins on Late Model Night

Nylaan and Smith also victorious

Marne, MI— It was Coors Light Late Model Night at Berlin Raceway and the racing was hard and fast. Taking home the trophies were Tom Thomas in the Coors Light Late Models, Andrew Nylaan in the Engine Pro Super Stocks and Ken Smith, Jr. in the Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks.

The #51 of Weston Jewett and #78 Will Olmsted led the Kerkstra Service Pro Stocks to the green flag and taking the lead on lap two was 336 Ken Smith, Jr. On lap 6, the battle for fifth was getting dicey between the cars of #7 Kevin DeGood, #33 Jerry Groeneveld, #50 Justin Regnerus and 376 Brian Tillema. Caution was out just three laps later, the #X of Matt VanHorssen spun off of the backstretch. On the restart, Smith was smooth and got away from the pack, the battles to watch were for third between Rengerus and Tillema and for sixth with DeGood, #40 Dave Cutler and #76 Ryan Gruppen. With 10 laps to go, Regnerus got around Tillema for third and then took second from Jewett on lap 19; he had five laps to catch Smith. The gap was too much to overcome, Smith got his third win of the season by 1.508 seconds over Regnerus. The rest of the top ten were; Tillema, Olmsted, Gruppen, Jewett, #20 Dave Hull, DeGood, #88 Tony Davis and Groeneveld.

Up next were the Engine Pro Super Stocks with #11 Nick Bonstell and #10 Bob Spencer on the front row. From the drop of the green flag, #77 Andrew Nylaan was challenging Bonstell for the lead; after a few laps working the outside lane, he went to the low side and after a four-car battle for the number one spot with Bonstell, Nylaan, #1 Brian Wiersma and #26 Chris Muyskens, Nylaan took it and was under attack from Wiersma. The pair battled for the entire race, with Muyskens not far behind. They rode nose-to-tail and they were all running comparable lap times. It looked as if Wiersma was gaining on him, but Nylaan was holding him off. Wiersma gave up the low side and moved to the top, but he lost ground and Muyskens was there to capitalize. Nylaan went on to win the caution-free race, and his second of the season. The rest of the top ten were Muyskens, Wiersma, #5 Cal Castle, #18 Denny Anderson, #55 Dave Lake, #5 Ray VanAllsburg, #12 Josh Slade, Bonstell and #8 Billy Eppink.

The 75-lap Coors Light Late Model race was last; #19 Nick Shotko was on the pole with #55 Chris Anthony on his outside. Shotko was leading and the battle to watch was for second between Anthony and #82 Tom Thomas. The rest of the field rode single-file and #27 Billy Shotko and fast qualifier #21 Terry VanHaitsma were closing in on Thomas for third. Thomas shook them off, split a lapped car with Anthony, took the second in the process and started cutting into Shotko’s lead. After three laps, Thomas was on his bumper, but couldn’t quite draw even. On lap 40, VanHaitsma had caught the leaders, but was biding his time, letting Shotko and Thomas duke it out. The first and only caution flew on lap 45 when #33 Monte Tolan slapped the frontstretch wall. This jumbled the field up and on the double-file restart, Thomas wasted no time taking the lead and driving away from the field. On lap 61, hard racing for second between Shotko and VanHaitsma made contact, but they both saved it and #1 Randy Sweet closed in on them. With two laps to go, Thomas was in traffic and while VanHaitsma was trying to catch up, he ran out of time. Thomas got his second win of the season and completing the top ten were VanHaitsma, Sweet, Meeuwsen, N. Shotko, #6 Dave Zagaiski, Anthony, B. Shotko, #28 Scott Thomas and #61 Alec Carll.

Thunderbird Raceway Winners: July 11th

I had the opportunity to make it to Thunderbird Raceway tonight for their annual "Kids Night". Missy Barnhard has been taking on the task of organizing this event over the years. Her hard work along with the volunteers she recruits to help her with this event is always one of the highlights of the year at Thunderbird. My hats off to her and her staff. They out do themselves every year. Every child walked away with a smile on their face as they all received gifts that included everything from bicycles to remote controlled cars. A huge crowd was there to witness the nights activities.

If you have not had a chance to make it out to Thunderbird you should give it a try. The racing was great all night long. As a former driver I can tell you it is no fun to run single file all night long with only one racing groove. I could see why drivers are raving about the track conditions at Thunderbird. I don't believe I saw a single feature tonight that was won by a front row starter. Lots of passing and action. It was great for the fans, but even better for the drivers.

What I saw in the Modifieds can be described as "unbelievable". What looked like an easy win for Stan Dodds turned out to be a highlight reel performance by John McCaul. With out any cautions it looked like no one would catch Dodds who started on the pole. At one point he led by almost half the track. Not only did McCaul catch him from deep in the field he passed him before the first caution was waved with less than five laps to go. Watching John McCaul work his way through the field was worth the price of admission. McCaul's win was his ninth of the season. Greg Smith was second. Stan Dodds was third

Another great race on night was in the Mini Stocks. Youngster CJ Rector led most of the race but it was the last twenty-five feet where Mark Farber made it count the most. Coming out of turn four both drivers stayed in the gas, but it was Farber's high groove that proved to be the winning lane as he beat Rector by a bumper to pick up the Mini Stock feature.

On another note Bruce Norwick Sr hit the turn four wall as hard as anybody I have ever seen. His Bomber car had the front end bent in a 90 degree angle after the impact. Norwick was able to walk away after having his cage rattled.
