I-96 Speedway Results: May 2nd

Lake Odessa, MI. May 2, 2007

Roger Wing,of Middleville Michigan, took home the second ever Nesmith Ultimate Late model feature Saturday night at I-96 Speedway. Driving the Tom Benson Remax, Bert's Glass Rocket, the 2004 Michigan Motor Sports Hall of Fame inductee started on the pole and lead the entire 25 laps. Jeff Kohn,of Sheridan Michigan took over third from opening night winner, and 1995 IMCA modified national champion Rick Stout on lap four and then passed Saranac racer Bry Sloan for second on lap 11 and that is were he finished. Former track champion Mike Nugent from Belding, was third, opening night winner, and 1995 IMCA modified national champion Rick Stout was fourth and Coopersville racer Jim Fairbanks, who started 13th, rounded out the top five. Wing in victory lane, “I want to thank Mike and Andy for bringing this series to Michigan. This is a lot of fun, and to beat the caliber of drivers here is special” After a great looking four wide salute to the fans, the green flag waved and Wing took from his front row starting spot. Action was slowed on lap 12 for John McClure as he came to a stop on the front stretch. With the green flag waving once again, the Delaware double file restart put Kohn on wing's bumper. Another quick yellow waved on lap 18, and once again Wing was able to pull away and take the 25 lap feature. Meanwhile, racing in the pack was exciting as both Fairbanks and Trueblood were on the move from their row seven starting spots. But at the checkered flag, no one had anything for Wing The rest of the top ten were, Trevor Sloan, Billy Trueblood Jr. from 14th, Scott Ehlert, from 16th, Scott Fisk from 17th and future National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame driver Kris Patterson. In heat race action, Kohn took heat one and Wing heat two on the big ½ mile track.

UMP modifieds were also in action, Ada Michigan driver Mark Anderson took the lead on the opening lap and went on to the win in the 20 lap mod feature. Anderson in victory lane said, “ this makes up for two weeks ago when we dropped out while leading. I want to thank Accurate Engines and all they do, and my crew for making the right changes on the car”. Opening night winner Todd Feutz was second, Johnny Deyoung, Steve Shellenberger, and Travis Stemler rounded out the top five. A scary moment was seen during the 14th lap, as Deyong and Tim Stemler were battling for third, when they touched sending Stemler off the back stretch. The car was not damaged and he was able to continue. Once again under green flag racing, Anderson was able to pull away to take the win. Justin Fleming, Brian Speelman, Brian Roark, Pat Ehlert and Stemler finished sixth thru ten. Heat race winners were Anderson and Tim Stemler. All the mod action was on the ½ mile.

The hobby stocks were racing for one of the biggest pay days in the state this year, a cool $500. 00 awaited the winner. Gladwin Michigan's David Mielke took the lead at the drop of the green flag over the 20 car field on the 3/8 mile track. Action was hot and heavy thru out the field, as the race was on for the share of the winner's purse. The red flag waved on lap 21 as Gary Buskirk took a hard roll over in turn one. Gary was ok, but the car was done for the night. During lap nine, Clarksville's Aaron Wolf took the lead and held off a great five car pack. Mielke finished in the runner up spot, Cody Denny, AJ Ward, and Ronald Wiers, from 12th rounded out the top five. Wolf, Ward and Ron Chaffee Jr. took the heat wins. Jeff Bissett won the 12 car main. Rob Nieman took home the checkered flag in the road beater feature. Scott Rumsey, John Primm, Terry Henderson and Ben Fust where the top five. Nieman and Brad Harbenski were heat race winners.

Next week, May 9th will see the first of four visits of the Sprints on Dirt. New Daddy Dustin Daggett from Portland, will lead the wing warriors in battle on the 1/2mile. UMP mods, road beaters, and mini sprints will also be racing. Then on May 16, the Nesmith Ultimate Late Models will race for $2,000 to win 40 lap feature. Promoter Mike Mouch has received phone calls from several out of state drivers interested in racing that night! For more and updated information, log on to http://www.i96speedway.com./

VanDoorn Ranks 14th on Speed51.com

14. Johnny VanDoorn - Super Late Models

Sometime marketing a driver is real easy when they have a great name like Johnny VanDoorn. Take your pick, you can say “Johnny Be Good” or imagine VanDoorn on the back of the jersey of your favorite team. One way or another, this 20-year-old is marketable and with his fun personality, he’s pretty high up our list. Last year he had a win at Mansfield and finished sixth in CRA points after nine top-10 finishes. This could be the determining year for VanDoorn as he needs to step up big time to catch the eyes of “the scouts.”

Pros: VanDoorn caught the eye of veteran racer Tim Steele a few years ago that led him to big wins like the All-American 400 at Nashville. He’s got a new outlook after a down 2008 that already produced a win with his new team.

Cons: When the coach/quarterback combo of Steele and VanDoorn fizzled, VanDoorn’s stock seemed to fizzle with it. Without a full-time ride, VanDoorn went from a highly sought-after star to a late-rounder real quick.

Congratulations to Terrance Taylor

I know this is a racing site but I want to take time to congratulate a former student of mine who has full filled a life long dream. You can go your entire teaching and coaching career without seeing this happen. I think it is worth to mention. Way to go Terrance Taylor. I just became a Colts fan. Below is an article from the Muskegon Chronicle.

Muskegon's Terrance Taylor drafted in 4th round by Indianapolis Colts
by Tom Kendra The Muskegon Chronicle
Sunday April 26, 2009, 2:14 PM

Terrance Taylor's long wait finally came to end at about 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Taylor, a former prep star at Muskegon High School, was selected by the Indianapolis Colts with the final pick in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. He was the 136th overall pick in the draft.
Taylor, a 6-0, 306-pound defensive tackle who was a three-year starter at Michigan, was projected as a possible third- or fourth-round pick, but appeared to be slipping toward the fifth round, before the Colts took him.
Taylor is one of the strongest players in the entire draft, which he proved at a recent NFL Combine by bench-pressing the second most of any participant. He is considered a throwback noseguard, who can use his strength to solidify the middle of the defense.
He said earlier in the week that he was hoping to get drafted by a warm-weather team, but his main concern was just getting back on the field and proving himself.
"I'm just ready to start the next phase of my life," said Taylor. "I'm ready to go prove myself all over again."

Press Release: Winston Speedway

Player Hater A Huge Success!

Rothbury, MI (4-26-09) -A great West Michigan evening was the backdrop for an exciting night of racing action. The Integra Shocks Player Hater 50 for the UMP Late Models always brings an exciting field of cars and fans as 45 Late Models showed up to vie for the $2,000 prize. The UMP Sportsman division had a night off, but their was great racing action in the UMP Modified division, UMP Factory Stocks, UMP Bombers, UMP Mini Stocks, and the promise of a whopper of a 50 lap Late Model feature. Don’t forget next week’s special Twin 25’s for the UMP Factory Stock division, running two 25 lap features paying $200 to win each feature.

UMP Late Models – It’s always exciting to witness the talent that is drawn in from out of town at the big events, and Justin McNeil and his #15 machine didn’t disappoint claiming top honors in the evenings opening qualifying heat. The top three in the qualifying heats transfer on to the feature, and the #34 of Alan Vochaska, and the #6 of Dona Marcoullier would follow on. Heat #2 would see the flying #9r of Curtis Roberts claim his spot in the main event, with the #111 of Curt Spaulding, and the #13b of JR Hotovy transferring on. Qualifying heat #3 found the #49 of Brian Ruhlman the victor, with the #55 of Roger Wing, and the #61 of Jimmy Fairbanks moving on. Heat #4 was claimed by the #55 of Matt Pickard, with the #27 of Eric Spangler, and the #11 of Tim Stott moving on. Heat #5 was won by the #21 of Tommy Sprague, with the #72 of Kyle Borgman, and the #51 of Dale Sheehy giving chase. The sixth and final qualifier would show the #1s of Andy Sprague in the top spot, with the #34g of John McCaul, and the #99 of Mike Wilburn rounding out the top three. Consi action transferred the top two on to the main and Kevin Juusola claimed his spot with an inspired run piloting his #22 machine to the front with a handful of laps to go, with the #87 of Rich Neiser giving chase. Consi #2 would show the #33 of Danny Knowles transferring on with the #15 of Phil Ausra finishing second. The Integra Shocks Player Hater 50 was unquestionably one of the best 50 lap dirt short track events witnessed in the West Michigan area. All drivers who participated put on an inspired display of driving talent, with an occasional dose of “aggressive restraint” mixed in for good measure. Early action saw the #15 of Justin McNeil make his way to the front where he stayed for much of the event, the #34g of John McCaul showed that he can drive a UMP Late Model, as well as modified as he made a late race dash to the front. But when the smoke all cleared, and the checkered flag waved it was the #21 of Tommy Sprague who showed all comers the way to victory lane. He diced his #21 machine through lapped traffic to wrestle the lead away from McNeil and the #15 machine with about 12 laps to go and never looked back. The #9r of Curtis Roberts would come home in the runner-up spot, with the #49 of Brian Ruhlman, the #15 of Justin McNeil, and the #1s of Andy Sprague rounding out the top five. The #11 of Tim Stott would come home sixth, with the #34g of John McCaul, the #34 of Alan Vochaska, the #72 of Kyle Borgman, and the #99 of Mike Wilburn rounding out the top ten finishers.

UMP Modifieds – UMP Modified action saw some of the drivers from out of town pulling double duty as many who ran late models, had a modified with them as well. The #49 of Brian Ruhlman would drive in both divisions and would not disappoint as he claimed top honors in heat race #1, with the #27 of John McCaul also pulling double duty coming home second, with the #1r of Jeff Erickson rounding out the top three. Heat race #2 would find the #78 of Dean Wilkerson making his way to victory lane, with the #14d of Stan Dodds, and the #88 of Greg Smith giving chase. Feature action showed the #57 of Ken Smith make his presence known, coming from out of town and leading most of the event it looked as if he would claim the victory. But, a late race caution set the stage for the #8 machine of Troy Marciniak to make his move passing on the outside with a few laps to go, and claiming the victory. The #57 of Ken Smith would have to settle for the runner-up spot, with the #88 of Greg Smith, the #27 of John McCaul, and the #14d of Stan Dodds rounding out the top five.

UMP Factory Stocks – Heat race action for the factory stocks would find the #29 of Brandon Taipolous claim top honors, with the #22 of Paul Tenbrink, and the #5 of Rich Huisken rounding out the top three. Heat #2 would be claimed by the #21 of Tony Weinrick, with the #72 of Bill May, and the #2 of Scott Erickson giving chase. Feature action would shine down on Weinrick once more as he would make it two feature event wins in a row piloting his #21 machine to the front with a few laps to go claiming the victory. The #5 of Rich Huisken would come home in the second spot, with the #73 of Rob Sternberg showing patience working his way to the front to finish third. The #2 of Scott Erickson, and the #23 of Nate Tarte would hold on to round out the top five.

UMP Bombers – Joe Ferrier would pilot his #77 machine to victory lane in heat race action, edging out the hard Charging #055 of Dan Diamond, and the #44 of Justin Schuler. Feature action would once more shine on the #77 of Joe Ferrier as he claimed the victory, followed home by the #5 of Bruce Norwick. The #44 of Justin Schuler would finish third, with the #12 of Jeff Calliff, and the #55 of Adam Grabe rounding out the top five.

UMP Mini Stocks – Carl McCann and his #59 machine would make their way to victory circle in heat race #1, with the #2 of Luke Near finishing a close second, and the #28 of CJ Rector rounding out the top three. Heat #2 would be claimed by the #21 of Brandon Tramper, with the #74 of Andrew Bartoszek, and the #33 of Cody Moorman giving chase. Feature action would once again find the familiar #59 of Carl McCann claim victory, with the #28 of CJ Rector coming home in the second position. The #21 of Brandon Tramper would finish third, with the #74 of Andrew Bartoszek, and the #81 of Glenn Parker rounding out the top five finishers.
