Winston Speedway Winners Circle: May 22

The UMP Modifieds put a great show on for the fans at Winston. Some of the biggest names in West Michigan made their presence known. Twenty two Mods started the 35 lap feature. In the early going the front row starters of Walt Wisniewski and John McCaul raced bumper to bumper with McCaul at the point. Midway through the race Wisniewski jumped to the high side and raced McCaul door to door edging him at the flag stand. On lap seventeen lapped traffic came into play. As McCaul and Wisniewski were trying to clear a lapped car, contact with the lapper sheered a pan hard bolt on Wisniewski's rear end and also cut a tire. What looked like was going to be one of the biggest wins in Wisniewski's career instead left him in the pits wondering "What if". On the restart with 18 laps to go McCaul was left searching for a groove up front as Stan Dodds and Jacob Poel were all over his bumper. Dodds and Poel swapped the runner up spot three times in the last seven laps. McCaul finally settled in the low line with his BMS Chassis and raced his way to become a $1, 000 richer. Stan Dodds racing the car that McCaul raced in 2008 was able to hold off Poel at the line. Finishing fourth after charging his way from his mid-pack starting position was Mark Anderson. Dean Wilkerson completed the top five.

Jeep Van Wormer Heads to WPMS & Tri-City Following Top Ten at Paducah

(PINCONNING, MICHIGAN) Jeep Van Wormer and his #55 Dirt Late Model team entered the twelfth Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series event of the season last Friday night, May 15 at the Paducah International Raceway in Paducah, Kentucky. Jeep finished fifth in his heat race and sixth in his B-Main, but took advantage of a series provisional to gain access into the $10,000 to win main event. After starting twenty-fourth on the grid, Jeep put on a great show for the large crowd in attendance and the cameras of the SPEED Channel. The Pinconning, Michigan driver earned Hard Charger honors by virtue of passing fifteen cars on his way to a remarkable ninth place performance.

The Iron Motorsports team was then slated to invade the LaSalle Speedway in LaSalle, Illinois on Saturday evening, May 16 for another $10,000 to win Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race. However, Mother Nature took the win on Saturday at LaSalle. Jeep currently sits eleventh in the latest version of the LOLMDS point standings and is leading the Rookie of the Year chase. You can view complete results from PIR on Friday by accessing www.lucasdirt.com.

Next up for the #55 team will be a pair of special events this upcoming Memorial Day holiday weekend in Missouri and Illinois. On Friday and Saturday, May 22-23, the West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, Missouri will play host to the 17th Annual 'O'Reilly Show-Me 100.' The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will sanction the crown jewel event for the first time and a $40,000 top prize is up for grabs. The cameras of the SPEED Channel will be on hand at WPMS this weekend to tape all of the dirt-slinging action for broadcast later in the year. On Sunday, May 24, the competition will switch to the Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois for another round of Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series action. A $10,000 winner's check is on the line at the St. Louis area venue on Sunday. You can view additional information on these Memorial Day weekend shows by accessing www.lucasdirt.com.

UMP DIRTcar Racing National Points Update: Schlenk (Super Late Models) & Sweeney (Modifieds) Maintain Points Leads

GRAYVILLE, IL – May 21, 2009 – Rusty Schlenk of Jackson, Mich. (Super Late Models) and Randle Sweeney of Clifty, Ky. (Modifieds) maintained their UMP DIRTcar Racing national points leads heading into the busy Memorial Day Weekend.Last weekend's wet weather throughout the Midwest curtailed Schlenk's racing plans to just one start, but he made the most of it by winning Friday night's Super Late Model feature at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park. His points lead did shrink slightly from the previous week, however, going from 63 points through May 12 to 54 points through May 20.Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., now sits second in the Super Late Model national points standings, continuing his steady climb in the rankings over the past month.

The driver known as the ‘Highside Hustler' scored a feature win last Saturday night at Kamp Motor Speedway in Boswell, Ind., and finished 11th in Sunday night's World of Outlaws Late Model Series event at Lincoln (Ill.) Speedway that was co-sanctioned by UMP DIRTcar. The 44-year-old Sweeney, meanwhile, registered a second-place finish last Friday night at Paducah (Ky.) International Raceway in his only Modified appearance of the weekend, extending his national points lead slightly to 64 points over Kent Robinson of Bloomington, Ind.Robinson was victorious on Saturday night at Bloomington (Ind.) Speedway, but he couldn't close the gap on Sweeney because he received only a one-point bonus.Gary Cook Jr. of Deery Creek, Ill., vaulted from sixth to third in the Modified points standings after racing twice over the weekend. He finished fifth on Saturday night at Fairbury (Ill.) American Legion Speedway and won Sunday night's feature at Quad City Raceway in East Moline, Ill.In other UMP DIRTcar divisional points races, Tait Davenport of West Paducah, Ky. (Pro Late Models), Chad Boone of Owensboro, Ky. (Limited Modifieds) and Bill May of Muskegon, Mich. (Sportsman), Chris Fisher of Bluff Point, N.Y. (Stock Cars) and Michael Rittenberry of Clarksville, Tenn. (4-Cylinders).All drivers are reminded that they must have a valid DIRTcar Racing membership by June 16 to be eligible to earn points for the remainder of the season.

Johnn VanDoorn Runner-up at Winchester

Coopersville Johnny VanDoorn backed up his opening season win with a fine second place finish at Winchester in the CRA series.

For the second year in a row CRA Super Series three-time Champion Scott Hantz passed early leader Jeff Lane to get the victory in Sunday’s Manning Service 100 for the CRA Super Series. Hantz was the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier toping a field of 24 cars. Hantz started fifth after drawing a five for the events invert. Jeff Lane took advantage of his front row starting position to grab the early lead. It didn’t take long for Hantz to work his way to Lane’s bumper. Hantz worked for several laps trying to pass Lane before getting by on lap 43, from there Hantz cruised to a four second victory.

"I want to park this car and leave it just like this for the Winchester 400!" Hantz exclaimed in Victory Lane. "The crew had the car set up perfectly, it was the best I have ever had a car handle here."

The victory was the third series win at Winchester Speedway for Hantz placing him in a tie with Bull Baker and Brian Ross for the most series victories at Winchester. The win was Hantz’s series leading 24th victory. He is now in second place with 12 fast qualifier awards, one behind series all time leader Kenny Tweedy.

John VanDoorn finished in second place after a tough battle with Jim Crabtree Jr., who came from his 12th place starting position to finish third. Aaron Pierce finished in fourth after a disappointing 17th place finish in the King Of the Wings feature after having to park that car with brake issues. Rick Turner battled back from having to pit for a flat tire to finish in fifth place.

Nick Lay was the K & N Filters Rookie of the Race Award winner with his 11th place finish. Fellow rookie competitor Brandon Fagin was the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hardcharger Award winner advancing 10 positions during the event to finish 12th. Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Awards went to Crabtree Jr. and Adam Purdy. Hantz claimed the Kingen Express Halfway Leader Bonus and the Competition Race Fuels Clean Sweep Award. Crabtree Jr. was awarded the ARP Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award for his great passes to finish in third.

5/16 Meyerink wins Modified Madness
Smith and DeVos also victorious

Marne, MI— It was All Faiths Night at Berlin Raceway area church groups came out in droves to support their pastors in the highly-anticipated Faster Pastor race. Taking the checkers for their churches were John Klompien (North Street CRC) and Mike Befus (Vineyard Church of North Grand Rapids). Ken Smith, Jr. (Kerkstra Services Pro Stock) celebrated in victory lane for the second time this season, as did Tim DeVos in the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder division and Jake Meyerink of the USA Modifieds.

The Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder B feature was the first of the night; #16 Andrew Conkin and #07 Clayton Brown brought the field to the start/finish line. Conklin was the early leader, however the car to watch was the #T11 of Jim Rhodes. After starting 8th, Rhodes made his way through the field and took the lead from Conklin on lap 4. After taking the lead, Rhodes began lapping cars and stretched his lead out to two seconds at half-way. Rhodes went on the win the B feature by nearly three seconds with the rest of the top five: #20 Tyler Nawrocki, Brown, Conklin and #42 Joe Norder.

The cars of #11 Leroy Magoon and #00 Mike Dutcher were on the front row for the A feature and the duo were single file after the start and starting to break away from the pack. Caution was out on lap 2 when the Brian Sheid’s #5 machine caught fire; he made it out of the car and was fine. On the restart, Magoon got a good jump and Dutcher was off of the pace. The battle to watch was for second between #14 Jason DeVos and #20 Tim DeVos with T. DeVos winning that battle. With three laps to go, Magoon was in heavy traffic and that let T. DeVos catch him, pass him and take the win. The rest of the top ten were Magoon, J. DeVos, #9 Nick Curtis, #6 Ben Kleis, #13 Dan Reimersma, #10 Kyle Hamm, #51 Brad Hastings, #354 Chris McKinley and #100 Jason Scheid.

The Kerkstra Services Pro Stock division hit the track next with #88 Tony Davis and #36 Ken Smith, Jr. on the front row. Smith took off with the lead and immediately checked out from the field and left #20 Dave Hull, #51 Weston Jewett and #50 Justin Regnerus battling for second. Fast qualifier, #76 Brian Tillema, was steadily making his way through the field after taking the green flag in ninth; he cracked the top five at half-way. Smith began lapping cars on lap 14 and the traffic let Jewett catch up to him, Tillema wasn’t far behind. The caution came out on lap 23 for the #33 of Jerry Groeneveld, he spun on the frontstretch and hit the wall. Smith got a great jump on the restart, but caution was out again with one lap to go. The cars of #40 Dave Cutler, #78 William Olmstead and #8 Sadie Klein wrecked in turn 1, bringing out the red flag. With white and green waving at the same time, Smith just had to make one more lap to get his second win of the season and he did just that. Jewett, Tillema, Regnerus, Hull, #76 Ryan Gruppen, #7 Kevin DeGood, #88 Tony Davis, #26 Brian Thome and #97.9 Ryan Schnabel.

The USA Modifieds provided the finale of the evening with #99 Travis Eddy and #99 Mark Flairman leading the field to the green flag. Eddy quickly established himself as the leader and as soon as the race was started, the caution flag was waving for the spinning cars of #212 Brock Coyer and #9 Steve Curry. On the restart, the top two, Eddy and #81 Jake Meyerink broke away from the field, but caution was out again for an incident involving #76 Ryan Gruppen. Eddy and Meyerink were on the gas as soon as the green flag came out and by lap 10, they were ahead of the rest of the field by three seconds. One lap later, the #99 of Steve Foster slapped the frontstretch wall while racing hard for position, but he was able to keep control of his machine. Eddy began to lap cars on lap 16 and while in heavy traffic, he was passed for the lead by Meyerink and just at Eddy was battling back, caution was out on lap 17. ON the restart, Eddy was trying to regain the lead from Meyerink and the field raced clean until caution came out on lap 27 for Foster, he had spun on the frontstretch. Just six laps later, caution was out again because #81 Greg Haines hit the turn 3 wall. On the restart, Eddy was giving it his all on the restart and while he got a nose under Meyerink, he was never able to pass him. Meyerink got the win and the rest of the top ten were Eddy, #99 Mike Brooks, #11 Brian Nester, #7 Scott Tomasik, #28 Scott Coe, #1B Bruce Chase, #10 Bud Perry, Flairman and #61 Brad Springer.

Coming up next Saturday, May 23 is the Budweiser Spring Championships featuring a 75-lap race for the Coors Light Late Models, the Engine Pro Super Stocks, Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinders and the Young Guns. It is also $1 Beer and $1 Hot Dog Night! Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12 and kids 5 and under are free. Pit passes for those 14 and older are $25 and racing is set to start at 7 p.m.
