Hantz Wins Toledo Allegiant Air Gold Cup Event
(TOLEDO, Ohio - July 9, 2010) - Scott Hantz captured the exciting Big Red Crème Soda 75-lap ARCA Allegiant Air Late Model Gold Cup race Friday night at Toledo Speedway. Mike Hammer was the ARCA Factory Stock winner, while Brad Turner took the ARCA 4-Cylinder main event. The winners all received their trophies in the Sunny D Winner's Circle. Heavy rain showers hit the track around 3 p.m., but passed through the area, allowing the racing program to be completed.
Perhaps one of the most competitive and exciting Late Model features at Toledo took place Friday night, with just one yellow flag and five different changes in the 75-lap main event. Jack Varney took off from the pole and led the first 14 laps until Harold Fair Jr. motored by on Lap 15. Fair, who started 10th, worked his way quickly to the front with Johnny VanDoorn in tow. VanDoorn moved to third by Lap 16 and got to second just a few laps later, as Fair and VanDoorn pulled away from the rest of the 22-car field by Lap 23. Earlier, Paul Pelletier dropped out on Lap 19, along with Dennis Strickland, who had driven to fourth but then got hung out to dry in lapped traffic. Strickland went down pit road several laps later.
At Lap 30, VanDoorn steamed by to take the point, but Fair was not done as he shadowed VanDoorn for the next 19 circuits. The only yellow flag came out on Lap 46 when VanDoorn tangled with Chad Guinn in Turn 3. Guinn took responsibility and gave VanDoorn his spot back. The yellow bunched the field, as great racing and pack racing took place around the fast half-mile paved oval. Fair stole back the lead by going under VanDoorn on Lap 50, while Hantz was on the move. By Lap 54, Hantz dove under VanDoorn to take the lead, coming from his 11th starting spot in the inversion. Hantz got tied up in traffic early on, but he came to the front quickly at a frantic pace. The great racing was not done, as Mike Root flew in the outside lane. Root picked off VanDoorn and Fair to grab second by Lap 68 and then tried to reel in the fleet Hantz as he took the checkered flag. Root's sensational run in the late stages gave him second, Fair was third, VanDoorn fourth and Derrick Griffin fifth, with Brent Jack, Ron Allen, Varney, Bill Litogot, and Joe Hawes completing the top ten. Hantz set quick time at 15.048 seconds, with heat wins going to Litogot, Allen, and Steve Peters.

Share Sandy TenBrink loved racing and was instrumental in putting together the annual “Kids Night” at Thunderbird Raceway every year,In October, TenBrink of Montague passed away at the age of 55 from cancer, but her memory will live on at Thunderbird on Saturday night.
Thunderbird will host “Sandy TenBrink Kids Night” along with running a 20-lap bomber class feature race in her honor.
“For 20 years she ran the kids night program and I took over for her five years ago,” said Missy Barnhard. “This is a good way to recognize Sandy for all the work she did to put the night on.”The special night devoted to TenBrink and kids 12 and under begins when the gates open at 3 p.m. with games and a bike registration.
Over 33 bikes will be raffled off throughout the evening and each child will receive a free goodie bag and toy along with games and food. Along with the special bomber feature race in TenBrink’s memory, a full lineup of racing in six other classes will be run.
Gates open at 3 p.m. with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. and racing at 7 p.m.

The Late Model Invitational race highlighted the racing action at Thunderbird on Saturday night. Kevin Nelson Jr. beat an 18-car field to win the race and he was followed across the finish line by Alan Vochaska, Rich Neiser, Eric Spangler and Mike Nichols. Also winning feature races were Stan Dodds (Modifieds), Rob Sternberg (Bombers-Factory Stocks), Mike Lynn (Street Stocks), Mel Whitten (Thunder Stocks), Rich Lieb (Warriors) and Nick Curtis (4 Cylinders).

Winston celebrated its 30th Anniversary by running a full program on Friday night in six different classes. Winning feature races were Rich Neiser (Late Models), Jeff Erickson (Modifieds), Dan Dykman (Street Stocks), Spike Grega (Factory Stocks-Bombers), Brandon Tramper (4 Cylinders) and Dan Reimserma (Warriors).
This week’s racing action, includes a a full racing card in six classes with racing action beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Sprints on Dirt series will make their only appearance at Winston on July 16.
West Michigan Sand Dragway
Several local drivers won their classes at the July 4th Shootout at West Michigan Sand Dragway in Mears on Friday and Saturday.
Grand Haven’s Kip Martin (Pro Truck), Fremont’s Dave Weaver (Sportsman 1) and Mears’ Tom Bray (Sportsman 2) all won their respective classes.
The WMSD will host the US Sand Nationals warm-up point series event on July 17 and the 18th annual US Sand Nationals and Pro Truck Nationals on July 23-25.

Brownstown, IL - July 6, 2010 - Jeep Van Wormer started the second half of his DIRTcar Summer Nationals tour the right way winning night 19 Tuesday night at Brownstown Speedway.
Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., led all 40 laps of the A-main to claim his third win of the 2010 Hell Tour. Van Wormer started on the pole and built large leads in traffic on his way to claiming the $5,000 winner's check. Van Wormer would be challenged at points by Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., but would eventually prove too strong.
The 2009 DIRTcar Late Model National Champion Feger would hang on to second place as seventh-starting Jack Sullivan of Greenbriar, Ark., would climb to third. Current point leader Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill. would finish fourth as Billy Moyer Jr. would round out the top five.
Up next for the DIRTcar Summer Nationals Tour is a visit to Spoon River Speedway on Wednesday July 7, 2010. In total the Hell Tour has traveled over 3,750 miles in the course of 20 nights. The trip from Brownstown to Spoon River Speedway in Canton, Ill., will have drivers traveling nearly 155 miles northwest to the track which last hosted a Summer Nationals event in 2008.

Trio of young drivers earning experience in Berlin Raceway's Pro Stocks division

MARNE -- Much like the minor leagues help baseball players prepare for life in the majors, the different racing classes at Berlin Raceway are like stepping stones for younger drivers.
For Brandon Hermiller, Lauren Bush and Mitch Meppelink, it’s almost like a small club.
The trio has experience in Arena Racing, and all three spent time last year on the Young Guns circuit before moving up to the Pro Stocks division.
Meppelink, who will be a sophomore at Zeeland West this fall, actually is one year too young to race in Pro Stocks, but Berlin officials “grandfathered” him in when Young Guns was discontinued following the 2009 season.
Bush and Hermiller had planned to move up to Pro Stocks anyway.
“I had done Arena Racing for two years and I’m in high school right now. You can miss out on a lot of stuff when you’re working on race cars,” Meppelink said. “I was a little intimidated when I stepped into Pro Stock. I’m thinking I don’t want to wreck any of these other drivers’ cars. Then you realize they drive just like you do.”
Meppelink began racing when he did go-karts as a younger child, but last year was his first in a big-size vehicle.
“I learned how to drive with a clutch in a church parking lot, and the week before the race I figured it out,” Meppelink said. “We’re doing better this season than we did last year.”
Meppelink finished fifth among the Young Guns drivers a year ago, with Hermiller in fourth and Bush in sixth. Hermiller won four races while Bush and Meppelink did not see a victory checkered flag.
Hermiller, Meppelink and Bush were ranked fourth, fifth and eighth in the points standings, respectively, entering Saturday’s competition. All three have yet to win a Pro Stock event this year.
For Bush, a Hastings driver who raced in the first year on the Arena circuit before dropping out to focus on her Pro Stock car, finishing high in the standings has helped offset the nerves.
“It was very nervewracking because there are a lot of experienced drivers who are competitive and have raced for many years”, Bush said. “It can be intimidating but it is also a lot more fun. The older drivers are very nice and want us to do well in racing. I’m pretty confident I can at least finish in the top 10. We’re having a good start.”
Hermiller, who will be a senior and may transfer from West Catholic to Coopersville, has also performed well in his first year on the Pro Stock circuit. Like Meppelink, he also has two years of Arena experience and one in the Young Guns class.
“It’s not bad. We’re keeping up with the other drivers and that’s good,” Hermiller said. “It was good to have Young Guns and that taught me how to drive and prepare for this year. The Young Guns got me used to the bigger cars. You always had to be prepared racing in Arena cars. Our goal was to come out and do the best we could, and it does surprise me how well we’ve done."

Key moment: Mike Bursley found his way into victory lane once again, overcoming accidents that took out nearly half the field and winning for the third time this season in Modifieds. Combined with a win last month by NASCAR’s A.J. Allmendinger, Bursley’s 97 car has found the winner’s lane four times.
On track: Late models will be spotlighted next weekend, as a 100-lap feature highlights a Saturday summer spectacular program featuring Pro Stock, Young Guns and 4-cylinder action.
Surprise, surprise: On a holiday-weekend night when people traditionally are away, the lure of $5 tickets and a strong program brought in the highest crowd in two years of Mike Blackmer’s ownership. Over 8,000 attended Saturday night.
Standouts: Vicksburg resident Larry Mollohan gave his granddaughter Cassandra a 12th birthday present when he captured the Vintage Racing Organization of America’s mid-season championship race.
Say what? “For a while it was survive, stay out of wrecks and keep the car clean. Once we settled down and got single-file, everything smoothed out.” -- Mike Bursley
