Campbell wins at Columbus, VanDoorn Seventh

Campbell Wins Tough Race

In a rough and tough JVM Enterprises/Nelson Kohman 125 at Columbus Motor Speedway Brain Campbell held on to win his second CRA Super Series race of 2010. Staring on the pole of the race Tyler Nuckles took the early lead and held on to it despite challenges from Scott Hantz and later Johnny VanDoorn until the 96th lap when VanDoorn bumped Nuckles on the front stretch sending him into the infield. Both drivers were sent to the tail, Nuckles for spinning and VanDoorn for causing the spin. Campbell inherited the lead and held off a strong Hantz to win. Robbie Pyle finished third, Tommy St. John fourth, Jim Crabtree, Jr fifth.

"We started the year strong, and in the middle it was just chaos, we are glad to be back on the right track." Campbell commented. "We did well at Toledo a couple of weeks ago, taking a brand new car out and working the bugs out of it. This car has won four races so far this year, we seem to be going in the right direction."

Victory keeps Denny Anderson in contention for Super Stocks title at Berlin Raceway

Victory keeps Denny Anderson in contention for Super Stocks title at Berlin Raceway

Steve Ungrey
The Grand Rapids Press

MARNE -- Denny Anderson has been in Victory Lane seven times over the past two years, but the Berlin Raceway veteran hadn’t made it there yet this season.

That changed Saturday, and the Walker driver also is on a path toward fulfilling a goal 25 years in the making.

Anderson, who last captured a points championship in 1985 as a member of the now-defunct Sportsman class, captured his first victory since Sept. 19 of last year when he defeated Dave Lake and Andrew Nylaan in Saturday’s Super Stocks 30-lap feature.

Because Lake finished in second, he likely kept the points lead over Anderson, which was a slim seven-point margin as of Saturday. Updated points standings will be available Tuesday.

Anderson, who finished second in Super Stocks in 2008 and sixth in 2009, has come close to titles before in the past two seasons, and he may yet fall short this year. If he does, Anderson still is appreciative of being in the chase.

“If it happens, it happens,” Anderson said. “I’m really not a points racer, but if we end up walking away from this season with a championship that would be cool.”

After an opening-lap accident that took out three drivers (Kelsey Steele, Travis Nylaan and Ray VanAllsburg), the race resumed and Anderson took the lead, only to lose it to Lake on the eighth lap.

Anderson got his chance just after the midway point. On a stretch where the drivers were three-wide across the track, he vaulted ahead of Lake and Andrew Nylaan and didn’t look back.

“The top three guys all finished 1-2-3 tonight so it might not do anything,” Anderson said of his chances to vault into first place. “I’ve got to thank my crew. We crashed this car last week pretty hard and we’ve worked hard on it to get it ready."

Anderson crashed his car off the backstretch near the end of last week's 75-lap feature.

“In the race I had a pretty good bite on the high side," Anderson said. "The car did a good job and I had a shot at passing so I took it.”

Anderson, a winner of more than 100 races in his 30-year dirt and pavement racing career, will have three more chances to gain in the standings. Races are scheduled in Super Stocks for each of the remaining three nights on the schedule, each one 30 laps.

Brandon Hermiller grabs first Pro Stock win; Tim DeVos suspended

Marne, MI- The crowds were out in droves this past Saturday night in support of the All Faith’s Night presented by JQ 99 at Berlin Raceway. The night also honored the March of Dimes foundation and Berlin’s very own 4-Cylinder divisions.
The first feature of the night was the Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder B division. Starting on front row were #20 Jackson Walker and #84 Steve Thompson. After the first lap was completed a red flag came out as numerous cars were involved in the caution. The most severe being the #62 Richard Church and #77 of Jared Lyzenga who hit the wall coming out of turn 1, both drivers would be ok. Other cars who spun out to avoid the halted traffic were the #20 of Tyler Nawrocki and the #44 Nicole Randolph. A second caution would come out on lap 4 for #63 Paul Ritchie going off the backstretch. Out of the restart a three car wide pass with #07 Clayton Brown, #7 Tim Stuart and Walker would see Brown take the lead. Another car would go off the back stretch on lap 5, #110 Dan Dells was the caution car. When the race resumed, Stuart and Brown were battling for position. Brown fought hard, but didn’t have enough to pass the leader. Stuart would take the checkered flag followed by Brown, #T11 Jim Rhodes, #20 Jackson Walker, and #26 Cal Phillips.

The Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder A division was up next, #354 Chris McKinley and #51 Brad Hastings started on front row. Another thrilling three car wide pass occurred on the first lap as Hastings, #77 Gerry Shephard, and #7 Ryan Hamm were all fighting for position. Shephard would emerge as the leader until lap 3 when R. Hamm passed both Shephard and Hastings on the frontstretch; R.Hamm would begin to pull away from the pack. Lap 7 would see the #100 car of Jason Scheid and #024 Cole Roelofs battling for the second spot. A caution would deter the racing action, the yellow was thrown as #17 Kyle Hamm and #01 of Rob Shoemaker spun on lap 15. R. Hamm continued to lead out of the restart, but Scheid was close on his heels. R. Hamm used lap traffic to separate himself from Scheid, and an interesting battle for second would go down to the wire. As R. Hamm had a comfortable lead, eyes were on Scheid and Roelofs who were neck and neck with 1 to go. R. Hamm got the win as Roelofs took second over Scheid by inches. Darrell Holtzlander in the #2 car and Shephard rounded out the top 5.

The Engine Pro Super Stock 30 lap feature was up next. A complete restart was necessary when the #16 Kelsey Steele started to lose control, #5 Ray VanAllsburg clipped her causing him to go off the backstretch; Travis Nylaan in the #3 car would also get clipped by Steele. All three cars would pit and not return. Out of the restart #77 Andrew Nylaan and #18 Denny Anderson would be the new leaders. Anderson was off to a hot start as A. Nylaan and #55 Dave Lake were fighting for second. Lake moved into second on lap 3, but had his eyes on the leader. Lake passed Anderson underneath on the frontstretch on lap 8 and emerged as the new leader. Lake, Anderson, and A. Nylaan were all bumper to bumper on lap 13. A. Nylaan tried a pass on the outside lane going into turn 3 on lap 15, but was denied by Anderson. A. Nylaan would finally pass Anderson on the inside, but the position was short lived. Lake, A. Nylaan, and Anderson were all neck and neck; the three car wide pass would see Anderson reclaim the top spot. Anderson finished as the leader, followed by Lake, A. Nylaan, #1 Brian Wiersma, and #78 Will Olmsted.

A 75 lap Coors Late Model feature was next. An unexpected controversy took place before the race even started. Two time Late Model Champion Tim DeVos was caught using a traction control device on his car. DeVos was suspended for the remaining season and would leave the premises. When the Late Models took the track, Nick Szotko in the #19 car and #21 Terry VanHaitsma started on the start/finish line. While VanHaitsma had a cushioned lead from the start, Szotko and #55 Chris Anthony were in a battle for the second position. After a failed pass attempt on lap 20 by Anthony, an identical move on lap 21 would give Anthony the second spot. Just as he was passing Szotko in turn 3, it appeared that Szotko got loose and he brought out the yellow flag. Out of the restart VanHaitsma , #222 Caleb Bisacky and Anthony were the three leaders. Once again VanHaitsma had a nice lead ahead of the pack, but Bisacky was inching closer. On lap 32 going into turn 3, Bisacky passed VanHaitsma on the outside lane for the lead. Bisacky was off, leaving the rest of the field in the rear. With 25 laps remaining, Bisacky had a 5.279 lead over Anthony. Mechanical problems would be the only thing that stopped Bisacky. Anthony would take advantage of Bisacky’s misfortunes and passed him on lap 61 for the top spot. Anthony would take the checkered flag, followed by #14 Steve Needles, #6 Dave Zagaiski, #4 Joe Bush, and #32 Ross Meeuwsen.

The final feature of the night was a 25 lap Kerkstra Services Pro Stock race. Starting on front row for the feature were #1 Brett DeKraker and #36 Ken Smith Jr. A complete restart was necessary, a 10 car pile up on the frontstretch brought out the caution. Among those involved were #101 Lauren Bush, #F1 Randy Veldman, #81 Marc Coleman, #89 Kirk Meissner, #71 Trevor McCoy, #17 Mike Reavis, #22 Darin Niemi, #52 Nick Sherrington, #X Matt VanHorssen, and #33 Allen Davis; thankfully no one was seriously injured. When the race officially began, Smith came out as the leader. Brandon Hermiller in the #6 car and #20 Dave Hull were fighting each other off on lap 4 for the second sport; Hermiller moved into second on lap 8. On lap 12 #40 Cutler spun out causing the yellow flag to come out. Hermiller took the lead out of the restart and would take the checker flag for the first time this season. Smith, #76 Brian Tillema, Hull, and #51 Weston Jewett were among the top 5 finishers.

Berlin Raceway veteran Tim DeVos suspended for having traction control

Berlin Raceway veteran Tim DeVos suspended for having traction control

Steve Ungrey
The Grand Rapids Press

MARNE -- One of Berlin Raceway’s veteran drivers and points leaders in the Late Models category has raced for the final time this season.

Tim DeVos, a Rockford resident who was third in the Late Models points standings entering Saturday, was suspended by Berlin owner and promoter Mike Blackmer for having traction control inside his vehicle.

“We took the top three in points (Ross Meeuwsen, Terry VanHaitsma and DeVos) and put their cars in impound for inspection,” Blackmer said. “We let them qualify before putting them in impound. Then, we roped the area off and found traction control in Tim’s car. That calls for a severe suspension or a disqualification.”

For a stretch of time when Whitecaps Racing owned Berlin, traction control was allowed. But it was made illegal once again when Blackmer bought the track.

There were two Late Models races, including Saturday’s event, left in the season. The next race is Sept. 11, which is championship night for all divisions.

DeVos declined comment, but Blackmer said rules are being enforced.

“We are getting more and more involved with the rules,” Blackmer said. “It has to be fair with everyone. I just can’t protect the top people. It has to be everyone, so that’s my job.”

DeVos won the Super Stocks title in 1995 and followed that up with Late Models titles in 2003 and 2005. He was six points behind VanHaitsma and 16 behind Meeuwsen as of Saturday.

Ryan Hamm stays atop 4 Cylinder points standings with victory at Berlin Raceway

Ryan Hamm stays atop 4 Cylinder points standings with victory at Berlin Raceway

Steve Ungrey
The Grand Rapids Press

MARNE -- Ryan Hamm jumped out of his car and heard the screams of his cheering
section from across the track.

The Norton Shores resident has been in Berlin Raceway’s Victory Lane many times this season and, having a brother involved in the points championship along with him, has made the year quite enjoyable.

Entering Saturday’s 20-lap 4 Cylinder A feature, Ryan held a 20-point lead over Kyle Hamm, a Muskegon native spending his first full season at Berlin. That lead widened Saturday, when Ryan beat out Cole Roelofs and Jason Scheid by a half-second apiece for the checkered flag.

Kyle Hamm took 14th overall, meaning the distance between the brothers likely will be wider in the points standings.

The same can’t be said for the pit area, where Ryan and Kyle are next to each other at all times.

“It’s been a really good season,” said Ryan, who has won four points races and one race that didn’t count in the overall points standings. “We’ve had two one-two finishes this year with both of us, and it’s just been such an amazing year.”

The success on the track has come with adversity off of it.

Ryan’s 6-month old daughter Ashlynn died in June 2009 after health complications from her premature birth, and Stephanie Gross, the Hamms’ mother, died in May after a 5-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).

On the track, there was a bit of adversity for Kyle Hamm in the latest race.

He suffered car problems on the backstretch and ended up T-boned by Rob Shoemaker with five laps remaining, sending him out of the lead lap.

“I was going to make a pass between the first and second turns and my transmission went into neutral,” Kyle said. “The right side of the car has some damage to it and we’ll need to work on it.”

No matter how this season turns out, the brothers have enjoyed every second of it. They have seven wins combined this season and just three total years of experience.

Ryan is on the verge of the first championship offered in the 4 Cylinder category, which is new this season to Berlin.

"It doesn’t matter who wins the title this year as long as it’s one of us that does it,” Ryan said.

Kyle figured he had lost some ground after Saturday, but he still is hopeful one brother will hoist the trophy Sept. 11, which is championship day.

“It’s been good. You work all winter and build these nice cars, and then you race along your brother each week that’s what makes it fun,” Kyle said.

“I think Ryan will open up a decent lead, but it’s possible. We still have a shot, I’m not ruling it out. It’s a good feeling when we’re both involved in it. When one of us has a bad day, the other brother is there."

Berlin Raceway recap
Saturday winners: Tim Stewart (4 Cylinder B), Ryan Hamm (4 Cylinder A), Denny Anderson (Super Stocks), Chris Anthony (Late Models).

4 Cylinder camaraderie: It turns out “Uncle” Tim Stewart and Ryan Hamm have more in common than racing 4 Cylinder cars at Berlin. Stewart’s car took the checkered flag in the 4 Cylinder B feature. On Friday at Winston Speedway in Rothbury, Hamm drove that same car to victory in a dirt race. Stewart was 22nd in the 4 Cylinder B points standings entering Saturday.

Say what? “We’re not really racing for points, but if we win the championship that’d be cool. If it happens, it happens.” -- Denny Anderson, who is in the running for his first points title since 1985 (Sportsman) as a Super Stocks driver.

Up next: NASCAR driver Mike Skinner will visit the track Saturday as part of Modifieds Night, which includes action in Modifieds, Super Stocks, Pro Stocks and 4 Cylinders.

Crystal Motor Speedway Storyline August 21st

August 21st 2010 Results!

A brief shower almost dampened events Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway but the track staff quickly got the track into shape and ready to go. The Michigan Legends were on hand and Louie Rouster took their feature with Tony Monge second. The Steeple race winner was Rick Barrett of Lakeshore Vineyard, Holland, MI.
The Smokers Club of Mt Pleasant Street Stocks was the first group on the feature menu and Larry Bulson jumped out to an early lead over the field. Anthony Carlton got loose coming out of turn four and was immediately hit by the division points leaders, Jasen Wiley and Mike Vandermark Jr. Wiley pulled off from damage received but Vandermark was able to continue. Doug Helsel began to pull close to the leader and looked under him a couple times before making the pass coming out of turn four. James Prochaska tried to pull along side Helsel but fell back. Mean time Vandermark took to the high side and ran it to the front of the pack and took the lead at the white flag and went on to win the feature after starting at the very back of the field. Helsel was second, followed by Prochazka, Bulson, Kyle Prochazka, Jeff Hitsman, Zach Hoyt, Al Kiester, Caden Foster, and Brooke Ann Brasington. Shane Spencer and Helsel claimed heat wins.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken sponsored Late Model event got off to a shaky start when John Hoard spun in front of the entire pack, bringing out the yellow. Kyle Borgman jumped out front over CJ Reisbig, Mickey Carman Jr, and Carl Ries. Borgman maintained a comfortable lead but Ries began to slowly reel him in. Carman suffered a mechanical failure, bunching the field up. Justin McNeil started third on the restart but wasted no time in passing both Ries and Borgman for the lead. Dean Huizenga moved into second with Roger Wing and Matt Pickard moving into the top five. Wing passed Ries for third while McNeil cruised alone out front. Wing looked several times to slide under Huizenga and did so with one lap to go. McNeil held on to win his first feature of 2010 over Wing, Huizenga, Ries, Pickard, Reisbig, Tom Dusen, Keith Gentz, Jay Van Dyke, and Kurt Mesman. Reisbig and Borgman scored heat gold.

Taylor Daniels grabbed the early lead in the Races On The Web Flinn Stock feature event with Cory Burch, Austin Bean, and Richard Melton following. Burch came charging forward and the front two ran side by side for three laps before Daniels took control again. Bean and Burch started a fight for second which allowed Daniels to move out front and take the win. Burch, Melton, Bean, Chance Allen, Chris DeCamp, Zach Rummer, Ryan Paradise, Neil Zeigler, and Matt Kammers. Daniels doubled up and also won his heat.

The Port City Racing Pro Stocks took to the track and Rod Heikkila took the lead over Derek Schestag, Cory Skoog, Ryan Kent, and Mike Husted. Heikkila held a small lead but developed a flat time, handing the lead over to Schestag. Kent made his way forward and took the lead, leaving Schestag to battle with Chaney Newland for second. With five to go, a tremendous fight for the lead developed with Schestag taking the lead back from Kent and Newland just inches behind. Newland took second coming into the white flag and ran side by side with Schestag coming down the back stretch when a caution came out, leaving all three drivers to fight it out in a one lap shoot out. When the final flag fell, Newland jumped out to a strong lead and ultimately the win over Kent, Schestag, Barry Rinard, Gordon Snyder, Vern Buskirk, Jacob Headley, Todd Bush, Gary Buskirk, and Bret Hollenbeck. Heikkila and Buskirk put heat wins in the books.

The Engine Pro IMCA Modifieds were next to do battle and an early caution bunched the field after just a lap. Ken Zeigler grabbed the lead with Jerry Hunt following. Chad Wernette and Brody Bowser were side by side as they fought for third. Another caution took out the leader when his rear end locked up, handing the lead over to Bowser with Wernette behind him. On the restart, Joe Fowler split the front two and took over the lead. Johnny DeYoung and AJ Ward broke into the top five. Fowler was able to coast home to win the feature over Wernette, Ward, Bowser, Brennen Bowen, Johnny DeYoung, Greg Wiles, Clifford Denman, Josh Borton, and Rusty Zeigler. Denman and JR Schmidt grabbed B Main wins while heats fell to Dan Minikey Jr, Neil Siefker, and Rusty Zeigler.

Gary Dancer cruised out to the early lead in the Port City Racing Pro Trucks with Gaven Parks, Aaron Raby, Tim Sooy, and Scott Nieman following. Dancer continued to lead at the half way point with Raby tight behind. Dancer, Raby, and Neiman came out of turn four three wide with Neiman and Dancer making heavy contact, sending both of them to the tail of the field. Dancer fell out with mechanical problems before the race resumed. Raby assumed the lead when the green flew with Sooy second and Tim Wood tight behind. With one to go, Raby held his line tight and went onto to win over Sooy, Dave Peters, Neiman, Woods, Brady Hollenbeck, Joe Neiman, Carl Thayer, Parks, and Gary Dancer. Dancer and Sooy brought home heat victories.

Next week at Crystal Motor Speedway is Season Championship Night with all divisions except the IMCA Modifieds declaring their season champions next week. The event will be sponsored by Alma Lock and Glass. Gates open at 4:30 and racing gets started at 7:30PM Adult admission to the grandstands is $10 and kids 5-11 are $4. Pit passes are $25.
