RIP: Terry Chadwick

West Michigan Racing send its condolences to the Terry Chadwick Family. Terry lost his battle to cancer on January 28th.

I had the pleasure to race against Terry in the mid to late 90's. He always got the most out of what he had to race. He was a true backyard mechanic and racer. If he did not have it, he made it. My toughts and prayers go out to his family and friends. Rest in Peace Terry!

VanDoorn and Campbell at Speedfest

Coopersville's Johhny VanDoorn #61 and Grand Rapid's Brian Campbell #20 brought their championship teams to Lanier Speedwway to compete against some of the best short track drivers in the country. Campbell's starting spot of 6th was quickly desimated when he spun on lap three to bring out the first yellow of the event. VanDoorn on the other hand hung out in the top 20 for much of the 250 lap event staying on the lead lap. That all changed in the last fifty laps. While Campbell was fighing his way back through he field, VanDoorn was visiting pit road on green flag racing laps.

When all was said and done it was "Rowdy" Kyle Busch winning the event over Steven Wallace, Jeff Fultz, Bubba Pollard, and Drew Brannon.

Campbell finished 19th while Vandoorn was 23rd.

RODNEY WING BECOMES FIRST REPEAT WINNER IN EAST BAY’S 11TH OPEN WHEEL MODIFIED WINTERNATIONALS
January 31, 2010 by eastbay

Rodney Wing of Meridian, Mississippi broke the string of no repeat winners in the 11th Annual Open Wheel Modified Winternationals Championship race, that was run as a make-up race on Sunday afternoon after the $5,000-to-win 75-lap finale originally set for Saturday night was rained out at East Bay Raceway Park in Tampa, Florida.

This opening act of East Bay’s 34th Anniversary season of their showcase month of Winternational events will be hard to top, as 63 different Open Wheel Modifieds showed four different winners in preliminary nights before Wing, the defending 09 champion repeated.

After leading from the pole for 66 laps, before being passed by outside running Jared Landers, Wing revealed, “There was only one place on the race track where I was better than he was and that was in turn three, so I got my chance on lap 72 and I made a dive for the inside and pulled ahead to lead the last three laps.”

` Showing a lot of excitement in victory lane, Wing continued, “Landers is a class act and I could run with him all day long! I want to especially thank my car owner Jeff Mathews and his crew for supplying me his back-up car. Robert Delgado built us great engines for this Shaw chassis. I promise, I’ll be back to defend my title next year. Can’t wait to get home to tell my family all about it.

The front of the field for the 75 laps showed Wing and Stanley Donahoo in the front row, with Rick Aukland and Kevin Weaver in row two and Jeff Mathews inside Mike Potosky in row three. With Wing leading, there was only one caution on lap 11 for John McCaul who spun inside turn four, before a lap 38 yellow for Devin Dixon sitting in turn two which turned into the mandatory fuel stop.

The drivers had an opportunity to get out of their cars for tearoffs, water and add fuel to their cars while checking out the rubber situation on their right rear tires. The winner determined he had about another 35 laps of rubber left, if he drove a conservative race to the end and didn’t abuse his tires.

Meanwhile 13th starting Jared Landers was up to eighth at the fuel stop. He said after the race, “I figured if I had new rubber, I could run it extra hard. I just can’t run a’ follow the leader race’ and I’d feel guilty if I didn’t get tires. I was doing alright and picking up spots on the outside after the break, and after I got in the lead, I made a mistake and kind of took it easy.” His Shaw by Landers chassis performed flawlessly with a Mullins engine under the hood. It carried sponsorship by Mark Martin Ford/Chevy, TSM Shock package and DV Products. His crew at East Bay was headed by Mike and Matt Cooper.

Rick Aukland, who described his right rear tire as looking like an inner tube , told the crowd that, “Jared (Landers) woke us up. Obviously there’s another lane out there, and he showed us all something. If your car is working well it’s all good in a 75-lapper, but if it’s not, it can be a handful. We were tight in hot laps, but OK for the race.”

Aukland capitalized on the battle for the lead and at the last minute slipped into second place at the checkered flag with his Lightning chassis with a “Big” Rick Twarg powerplant under the hood. Sponsors on his NO. 2A included Quick Time Performance Parts, Sweeney Services and Brandon Rental.

Kevin Weaver started fourth and finished fourth, while Dave Hess, Jr. started seventh and was as high as fourth, but settled for fifth. Rounding out the top ten it was Don O’Neal, Stormy Scott, Shane Sabraski, Brady Short and Dale Mathison.

The top six in points from the week were locked in and then the eight heat winners advanced followed by the two B-Main cars of Devin Dixon, Brady Short, Tommie Seets, Jr, Mike Spatola, Danny Schwartz, Shane Sabraski, Steven Pfeifer and Curt Gelling. Two provisional starters were East Bay’s highest point man that didn’t make the race John Bradley and farthest tow (2563 miles) Jeremy Newberry from Brentwood, California.

Lake Odessa, MI.
January 29, 2010

With winter in full control of the weather, I-96 speedway is heating things up, and thought turn to spring, with the release of the 2010 racing schedule. Once again, the track will feature a well rounded racing season, with everything that a circle track race fan could want.

The season kicks off on Saturday night April 24 with the tracks weekly divisions of UMP late models, UMP modifieds, UMP street stocks and four cylinder’s on the new 3/8 mile track. All of the UMP divisions will be running for both state and national points.
Several special events are nicely sprinkled throughout the year.

The Sunoco late models make a return to the track on May 15 and August 21. The series feature drivers from the tri state area competing on the new 3/8.

The World of Outlaw sprint cars make their annual appearance on May 22. The fastest show on dirt will feature 20 time champion Steve Kinser who for the 2010 season, is driving for NASCAR driver Tony Stewart. The WOO will also be racing on the ½ mile track.

Speaking of sprint cars, the SOD series will make three total appearances for 2010. June 19 and August 7th will see the drivers on the ½ mile and on September 25th on the 3/8 mile track.

The UMP summer national’s tour will make a stop on Tuesday night June 29. The tour features racing for 28 nights in 32 calendar days in seven states. Back in 2005, Shannon Babb took home the feature win as well as the tours point’s title. Some of the best dirt late model drivers will be doing battle on the ½ mile.

On July 10th the AMA Grand Nationals return. The Grand National riders reach speeds of over 100 mph on the ½ mile, racing just inches apart!

Two NASCAR nights are planned for June12th and August 14th. Negotiations are still under way with a couple of different drivers.

The Gold Cup nationals will conclude the year on September 25. Five divisions of race cars will complete on the 3/8 mile, including the SOD season championship.

McCaul 22nd on Night Four at East Bay

DON O’NEAL IS THE 4TH WINNER IN EAST BAY’S OPEN WHEEL WINTERNATIONALS
January 29, 2010 by eastbay

"We struggled all week and finally had everything come together tonight,” said a beaming Don O’Neal who became the fourth different winner in as many nights of the 11th Annual Open Wheel Modified Winternationals at East Bay Raceway Park, Friday night. His $l,500 first-place check marks the last of the preliminary nights leading up to Saturday’s championship night paying $5,000 to win.

The O’Neal story this week has been all bad luck. Plagued with engine issues, he failed to make the A-Main on Tuesday, finishing 14th in the B-Main. On Wednesday, he missed qualifying through his heat and then B-Main by just one spot. Thursday night after making the cut in his heat, he was unable to start the feature because of a trailing arm problem.

Finally, it all came together for O’Neal and his car builder Joe Godsey and his new Outlaw chassis creation Friday night. After his crew consisting of Fudgie, John Shelty and the three members of the Godsey clam – Joe, his father Tony and his grandfather Ray spent hours changing engines, oil pumps and oil pans, then going over the entire car, they were rewarded for their hard work with a win.

O’Neal won his heat in convincing style from outside second row and then started fourth in the 25-lap feature after a pill draw for the heat winners. Perry Brown started on pole, but it only took O’Neal three laps to make his pass for the lead outside in turn three. From that point on, O’Neal drove away after each yellow flag. Just before a lap seven restart, he had a 2.5 second lead. Then, it only took another five laps to gain that advantage again, maybe because O’Neal chose a different tire compound from most of the field.

The winner carried sponsorship from John Shelty shocks, Integra Racing Shocks, Budda Transmission, O’Neal Wood Products, P.A. Racing, Premier Racing Suspension, Outlaw Chassis out of Bedford IN, Rightway Construction, Out Pace Rods, Franklin Rear Ends and UB Products. The team utilized two engine builders – SPEC and Bill Tranter.

Brown had tough luck and was disqualified after losing a muffler on lap seven while running third behind Dave Hess, Jr. On lap 18, O’Neal had a close call in turn four when the lapped car of Kyle Bronson spun and almost collected the leader, giving O’Neal lots of damage to his right rear panel and almost got his right rear wheel.

On lap 21 Jeff Mathews got by Hess, but wasn’t able to close on O’Neal, but just three laps later, Jared Landers managed to squeek by Mathews to nail second spot. Landers came two days late with his Mark Martin Ford/Chevy sponsored Shaw by Landers Chassis that he just finished building. Buzzie Reutimann started seventh and finished fourth, while Hess, Jr. held on for a top five finish.

Rounding out the top 10 it was Rodney Wing, Rick Aukland, Vic Vena, Mike Potosky and Kevin Weaver. From the first B-Main Austin Sanders, kStevan Pfeifer, Ting and Stormy Scott advanced, while the second B-Main sent Stanley Donahoo, Dave Dixon, Aukland and J.R. Hotovy to the A-Main. Brady Short won the Strawberry Dash.
