Berlin Storyline: August 14th
Dan Reimersma victorious on Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder Night
Jewett, Smith, Lake and Nylaan also win
Marne, MI—With well over 200 laps of racing on tap for the evening, events at Berlin Raceway were set to move quickly and right after the invocation and national anthem, feature racing began.
Up first was the make up 29-lap Kerkstra Services Pro Stock race with #40 Dave Cutler and #51 Weston Jewett on the front row. Jewett took the lead as soon as the flag dropped and making their way through the field were the cars of #50 Justin Regnerus, #76 Brian Tillema and #76 Ryan Gruppen. By lap 17, Jewett began lapping cars and Regnerus was closing in on Cutler for the second position. The two were coming up on lapped traffic and Regnerus caught and passed Cutler for the position. Gruppen was swiftly on Regnerus’ tail while Jewett enjoyed a large lead and his first win of the season by 4.606 seconds. Regnerus and Gruppen crossed the start/finish line door to door with the advantage going to Gruppen. Regnerus got third and the rest of the top ten were Cutler, #36 Ken Smith, Jr., Tillema, #7 Kevin DeGood, #88 Tony Davis, #20 Dave Hull and #78 Will Olmsted.
The 39-lap make-up Engine Pro Super Stock feature rolled next; #15 Mat McClarren started on the pole with #12 Josh Slade on his outside. Slade was quick to take the lead and on lap 8, the #10 of Bob Spencer raced side by side until the first caution of the night came out on lap 21 for the #8 of Billy Eppink, he spun coming out of turn 4. Slade picked the outside on the restart and once the flag dropped, it was Spencer who was leading. They didn’t get a chance to complete the lap because caution was out again for #11 Nick Bonstell spinning on the frontstretch. The restart reverted back to the last completed lap placing Slade back in the lead and this time he took the inside but Spencer still took the lead on the restart. Caution was out again on lap 24 for the #77 Andrew Nylaan who was off of the pace on the backstretch. On this restart, Slade was able to stay with Spencer and #55 Dave Lake joined the battle. Spencer cleared Slade, as did Lake who immediately started pressuring Spencer for the lead. With two laps to go, Lake passed Spencer for the lead and put enough distance between himself and Spencer to get his first win of the season. Spencer, #5 Ray VanAllsburg, Slade, #26 Chris Muyskens, #98 Bob Bliss, #18 Denny Anderson, #44 Brian VanZalen, McClarren and #13 James Haney completed the top ten.
It was Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder night and that meant the entire field for cars started the 30-lap feature. #28 Phil Speet and #47 Don McNabb lead the 34-car field to the green flag. On lap 2, #T11 Jim Rhodes had a clean spin and #51 drove off of the backstretch, but both were able to recover and there was no caution. The #9 of Nick Curtis and #6 Ben Kleis were doing battle for the lead on lap 5 and Kleis took it soon after they were in lapped traffic. On lap 17, fast qualifier #13 Dan Reimersma, who had started 18th, took the lead from Kleis. The first and only caution came on lap 18 when #47 don McNabb was off the pace and came to a stop on the backstretch. The restarts for this race were double file, Reimersma took the outside and just pulled away from the field. He got his 4th win of the season by just over 4 seconds and the rest of the top ten were #7 Ryan Hamm, #024 Cole Roelofs, Kleis, Curtis, #12 Jay Platz, #354 Chris McKinley, #01 Rob Shoemaker, #19 Dave Avink and #4 Ron Myers.
The second Kerkstra Services Pro Stock Jack DeJong Memorial race rolled next with #88 Tony Davis and #7 Kevin DeGood on the front row. Davis maintained his position while the field jockeyed for positions behind him. Lap 6 saw the first caution of the race; DeGood and Regnerus tangled, spinning in turn 2 and collecting Cutler and Gruppen. This resulted in a red flag for clean-up. Once the race was restarted, Hull took the lead with Smith, Jr. and Jewett not far behind. On lap 12, Smith was side by side with Hull, but the caution flag halted his efforts. Jewett was pressuring Smith on the inside lane and outside lane, but, once again the caution flag came out. Jewett was all over Smith on the restart, but was unable to to past him. Smith got his fourth win of the season and completing the top ten were Jewett, Davis, Tillema, Hull, Cutler, #00 Dennis Mann, #81 Marc Coleman, #26 Brian Thome and #89 Kirk Meissner.
The final Engine Pro Super Stock feature were last with #18 Denny Anderson on the pole and #51 Justin Ryan on the outside. Anderson got a big lead on the start and Lake made his way to second, but before the racing got going, the caution and then red flag came out after Slade’s engine blew on lap 4. The top three of Anderson, Lake and VanAllsburg broke away from the field and by lap 17, Lake was challenging Anderson for the lead. At halfway, those three cars were still trying for the lead and on lap 28, the second caution of the night flew due to contact between Lake and VanAllsburg. Nylaan took the lead on the restart and was able to pull away from the field as Anderson and #11 Nick Bonstell battled for second. Nylaan went on to get his third feature win of the season and the rest of the top ten were Anderson, Bonstell, #98 Bob Bliss, #5 Cal Castle, #26 Chris Muyskens, #8 Billy Eppink, #10 Bob Spencer, VanAllsburg and #13 James Haney.
