Do You want to Race Kyle Busch?
NASCAR Sprint Cup, The Grand Rapids Press »
NASCAR Sprint Cup's Kyle Busch will take on local fans in go-kart race at Craig's Cruisers
By Steve Kaminski
The Grand Rapids Press
Kyle Busch is coming off his first NASCAR Sprint Cup win of the season. Think you can beat him in a go-kart?Jeff Gordon had no luck holding off Kyle Busch in Saturday's NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Richmond.
Local drivers soon will find out if they can do better against one of NASCAR’s most exciting and controversial stars.
Busch, who won for the first time this season with late-race heroics at Richmond, is headed to Craig Cruisers, 5730 Clyde Park Ave. SW, in Wyoming on May 11 to participate in a go-kart race against local fans.
Michigan International Speedway officials are bringing the 25-year old Las Vegas native to West Michigan to help promote the June 13 Helluva Good Sour Cream Dips 400.
Busch will make a pit stop at Craig’s Cruisers, which includes an indoor go-kart track. Local fans will have an opportunity to test their skills against him.
Qualifying will run 9 to 11 a.m., and the cost is $5 per driver.
“We will then take the 12 fastest-qualifying times and they will be entered into a feature race against Kyle Busch. They will have the chance to race against him,” MIS public relations director Dennis Worden said.
Busch will take on the field of local drivers at 2 p.m. and will participate in a question-and-answer session with fans following the race.
Busch, who drives the No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing M&M’s Toyota, has 16 career victories. He is fifth overall in the Sprint Cup points standings heading into this weekend’s race at Darlington.
“What a great chance for our fans to have the opportunity to race against Kyle Busch,” MIS president Roger Curtis said in a news release. “Kyle is one of NASCAR’s top-tier drivers, and we appreciate him giving us his time to participate in this event and provide 12 lucky fans ... the once-in-a-lifetime experience to race against him. It will be a fun day.”
A 13th spot in the field will be guaranteed to the fan who comes closest to guessing the number of M&M’s in a 20-inch vase located in the MIS ticket office in Brooklyn. Fans may stop by 8:30 to 5 p.m. each day this week. The winner will be announced at 5 p.m. May 10.
Busch is no stranger to West Michigan and will return to compete in the June 15 Rowdy’s Revenge 251 at Berlin Raceway in Marne. He also established the Kyle Busch Foundation after visiting St. John’s Home in Grand Rapids while in town to race at Berlin in 2007. St. John's is among the organization's benefactors.

Saluting The Top Five of the Week
Checkered Flags: Dustin Daggett's domination at Crystal Motor Speedway continues
By Steve Kaminski
The Grand Rapids Press
Most tracks across the state are opening up, and I want to honor drivers for their successes.
I will be saluting five Michigan drivers each week, and I'm looking for your input. Drop me an e-mail at stevekracer@aol.com and tell me about a driver who is excelling. I'm looking for feedback from track promoters as well as fans and drivers.
Most tracks run either Friday or Saturday night, so please send the information by Monday evening. Please include the driver’s name, hometown and highlights, and attach a photo if you have one.
If a driver makes the list one week, then that driver won’t be eligible for it the next. No one can go back-to-back. This will enable us to shine the spotlight on more drivers.
Here are this week's honorees:
Dustin Daggett, Portland
Daggett won Saturday night’s 25-lap SOD Sprints on Dirt feature race at Crystal Motor Speedway, giving him his 10th Crystal victory in his last 11 starts dating back to September of 2006. Daggett was voted last year's MLive.com Finish Line Driver of the Year.
Travis Eddy, Midland
Berlin Raceway debuted its Modified division Saturday night, and Eddy won the 50-lap feature. He also won the April 24 feature at Auto City. Eddy is the son of Mike Eddy, the former American Speed Association standout.
David Grega, Fruitport
Grega won both Bomber division feature races at Winston Speedway on Saturday night after taking top honors at Thunderbird Raceway on Friday. Grega already has five wins at the two tracks combined this season.
Eric Lee, Clinton Township
Flat Rock Speedway’s two-time defending Late Model champion opened the 2010 season by winning Saturday night’s 50-lap feature race.
Terry Senneker Jr., Wayland
Captured the checkered flag in Saturday night’s Intimidator 100 Late Model feature race at Kalamazoo Speedway. Senneker is back racing for the Holland-based Terry Gentry Racing team.

Martin dragway, Berlin Raceway go old-school with Chi-Town Hustler and Johnny Benson

The Chi-Town Hustler will be back at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park in Martin for the Thunder Nationals on Friday and Saturday, and Grand Rapids native Johnny Benson Jr. is returning to Berlin Raceway for Saturday night's 7 p.m. CRA Super Series 125-lapper.
Timeout a second.
Is this 2010 or 1988?
Visit Youtube.com, and you can find a video of the Hustler tearing down Martin's quarter-mile in a match race against the Flashback Corvette Jet from 22 years ago, back when Wayne Minick was racing it.
You probably recall that Benson quickly was developing into an area short-track standout in 1988, which eventually led to NASCAR Nationwide and Camping World Truck championships and an eight-year Cup career.
How well do you really know your short track and drag racing, though? Do you think you know everything there is to know about Benson and the Hustler?
Let me hit you up with a pop quiz before the first big weekend of the season gets under way in West Michigan.
It's only two questions.
No. 1 -- True or false: It was Benson's father who encouraged his son to go dirt track racing in the early 1980s when Benson announced he would race for the first time -- the elder Benson figured it would be the best possible education for a young driver looking to build a racing career?
Actually, that answer is false, even though local legend has it that that's why Benson went dirt track racing. Guys like me probably helped push that myth along, too.
Sorry about that, because Benson said it was his idea to go dirt racing and he really didn't have any intentions of building a racing career at the time.
"We were building a lot of dirt cars," said Benson, who was working out of his dad's shop, Benson Speed Equipment. "We didn't race any through the company. At the time, I rode dirt bikes and enjoyed running on the dirt, and we had customers to help. I really wanted to learn a little more about the cars to tell the truth.
"At the time, I was working with my dad and I understood the asphalt cars and knew what the customers wanted. Sometimes, the dirt guys would call and I didn't understand what they needed, other than me making calls. I ran three years on it. I had a great time."
No. 2 -- True or false: Indiana drag racer Troy Martin is racing the original 1977 Rislone Chi-Town Hustler Dodge?
If you said true, then I got you again. Don't feel bad, though, because Martin went through great lengths to make sure it looks like the original.
"I bought the original Hustler off of Bob Gibson who works with the NHRA safety safari team in 2002 or 2003, and I did some restoration on it," Martin said. "We raced the original car up until 2008. Then, with all the safety requirements and the speeds going, we parked the original.
"We built a new one just like the old one. We built a brand new body using a mold off the old one. I bought all the models and found pictures of the car to get as much detail in the car as we could. It's drives a lot better and it's lot safer."
OK, enough about the past. Benson will compete in his first race at Berlin since his fiery crash in an International Supermodified Association feature last June 13 that left him in serious condition with multiple injuries.
He has healed up fine and was back in a Late Model testing during Berlin's April 10 test-and-tune, and he said returning to the track for the first time was no big deal.
Benson will race friend Kyle Busch's CRA car Saturday. Busch will return to Berlin on June 15, and Benson is breaking in the car for him.
Martin's Thunder Nationals event has gotten so big that it is going to two nights this spring. The Mountain Motor Pro Stocks are the featured class.
The program also will include alcohol dragsters, Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars and the Queen of Diamonds Jet Dragster. Qualifying is 5, 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, and eliminations begin 4 p.m. Saturday.
It will seem like old times.

Eddy’s Modified Champion of the Night
Rain forces completion of remainder races
Marne, MI— The 60th Anniversary Season was finally kicked off for Berlin Raceway, after raining skies postponed opening night last weekend. Anxious fans and drives came out in hope of an enjoyable night of racing, but the rainy weather would once again be a hindrance for Berlin fans. Numerous heat races were completed and #78 Travis Eddy won the Model Coverall Modified Features Race. With cloudier skies developing, rain would once again force the completion of the event.
The first race of the season for the Model Coverall Modified’s featured the #78 of Travis Eddy and #8 Billy Eppink on the front row. The first lap wasn’t even complete when the yellow flag came out; the #6 car of Ben Kleis spun out. A complete start was necessary, after the restart Eddy and Eppink enjoyed a comfortable lead for first and second, while the #76 of Ryan Gruppen rounded up the top three. The 7th lap saw yet another caution, when the #8 of Billy Eppink caught on fire. Eppink did not suffer any injuries; however he would not return until the 18th lap. Eddy and Jones battled for 1st and 2nd, then in the 9th lap, the #2 of Kyle Jones took the lead from Eddy. The battle would continue for Jones and Eddy while the #12 of Brian Bergakker was in a comfortable 3rd. During the 31st lap Eddy used lap traffic to make up ground on Jones, but to no avail. Jones continued to lead with 10 laps to go, the action was bumper to bumper. Eddy finally passed Jones with three laps remaining. Victory lane belonged to the #78 of Eddy, Jones would come in second, and Bergakker would finish in 3rd. #44 Jordan Dalhke, #97 Mike Bursley, #61 Brad Springer, #6 Ben Kleis, #9 Steve Curry, #9 Ryan Gruppen, and #99 Mark Fliearman rounded up the top ten.
Due to the forecasted rain and the slick conditions on the track, the event was deemed rain shortened, but completed.
Up next at Berlin Raceway is Keyser’s Port City Racing CA 125. NASCAR star and local legend Johnny Benson, Jr., will be in action driving Kyle Busch’s #51 car. Model Coverall Modifieds and the Burnips Equipment 4 Cylinders will also take the track. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, the first race will start at 7pm.
