Eddy’s Modified Champion of the Night
Rain forces completion of remainder races
Marne, MI— The 60th Anniversary Season was finally kicked off for Berlin Raceway, after raining skies postponed opening night last weekend. Anxious fans and drives came out in hope of an enjoyable night of racing, but the rainy weather would once again be a hindrance for Berlin fans. Numerous heat races were completed and #78 Travis Eddy won the Model Coverall Modified Features Race. With cloudier skies developing, rain would once again force the completion of the event.
The first race of the season for the Model Coverall Modified’s featured the #78 of Travis Eddy and #8 Billy Eppink on the front row. The first lap wasn’t even complete when the yellow flag came out; the #6 car of Ben Kleis spun out. A complete start was necessary, after the restart Eddy and Eppink enjoyed a comfortable lead for first and second, while the #76 of Ryan Gruppen rounded up the top three. The 7th lap saw yet another caution, when the #8 of Billy Eppink caught on fire. Eppink did not suffer any injuries; however he would not return until the 18th lap. Eddy and Jones battled for 1st and 2nd, then in the 9th lap, the #2 of Kyle Jones took the lead from Eddy. The battle would continue for Jones and Eddy while the #12 of Brian Bergakker was in a comfortable 3rd. During the 31st lap Eddy used lap traffic to make up ground on Jones, but to no avail. Jones continued to lead with 10 laps to go, the action was bumper to bumper. Eddy finally passed Jones with three laps remaining. Victory lane belonged to the #78 of Eddy, Jones would come in second, and Bergakker would finish in 3rd. #44 Jordan Dalhke, #97 Mike Bursley, #61 Brad Springer, #6 Ben Kleis, #9 Steve Curry, #9 Ryan Gruppen, and #99 Mark Fliearman rounded up the top ten.
Due to the forecasted rain and the slick conditions on the track, the event was deemed rain shortened, but completed.
Up next at Berlin Raceway is Keyser’s Port City Racing CA 125. NASCAR star and local legend Johnny Benson, Jr., will be in action driving Kyle Busch’s #51 car. Model Coverall Modifieds and the Burnips Equipment 4 Cylinders will also take the track. Tickets are $15 for adults, $5 for children ages 6-12, the first race will start at 7pm.
