Fife Lake, Michigan (Friday July 11th, 2014): The race fans of Northern, Michigan were treated to the first visit of the year by the Michigan Traditional Sprint Series. The Davison, Michigan based series brought the best “Wingless” sprint car drivers in the state to the fast 3/8ths (0.375) mile high-banked dirt oval of Cherry Raceway in Fife Lake, Michigan. The show also featured racing from the Factory Stocks, Four-Cylinder Warriors, and the Crossroads Chevrolet Compacts. The Stock Cars also competed in their mid-season championship in front of another packed grandstands.
The Factory Stocks went head to head in a 12-lap main event. Peni LaLonde took the lead in the early going. Throughout the entire race she would not give up the lead to anyone as she would end up going all the way from green to checker as the leader.
This was the first career feature win for the 40-year old Lake City, Michigan native in the P&J Racing / Chevrolet. Richard Cebula Jr. finished second. Robert Hittle, Jeff Chalker, and Karl McClellan made up the top five. The lone heat race was won by McClellan.
The Crossroads Chevrolet Compacts were out next for their 15-lap feature. The first lap completed with 15-year old Dalton Bouschor leading the field. Bouschor was able to gain a good lead until after a restart on lap 6 Jacob Flickinger would be able to find a groove that worked to shoot himself to the lead. He would never half to look back from there as he would go on to get the win.
The 16-year old from Gaylord, Michigan scores his fifth feature win in a row behind the wheel of the Outlaw Graphics / Dodge. 2011 track champion 15-year old Autumn Beeman was the second place finisher. 2012-track champion Chris Casey, 17-year old Rheanna Doberstein and Bouschor completed the top five. Casey was the heat winner.
The Four-Cylinder Warriors competed in a 20-lap feature event. Defending track champion Andrew Austin took the early advantage. Austin would pull out to a healthy advantage and lead the majority of the event until on the final lap Austin’s car would lose power, which surrendered the lead to Jeremy Wood who picked up the win.
This was the third win of the season for the 31-year old from Manton, Michigan in the A&W Racing / Pontiac. He finished just ahead of Bob Craycraft who finished second. Arlie Cooper, Jeremy Tulick, and Austin rounded out the top five. The heats were won by Jim Luhtanen and Wood.
The 20-lap Stock Car feature made its way out. The green flag waved and it would be Kevin Newberry taking the lead. Newberry would hold the advantage throughout much of the event. However, in a late race caution would see a restart where Joe Fisher powered his way to the lead off a re-start, but Newberry answered back and go on to get the win.
Newberry, the 49-year old from Gaylord, Michigan driver of the Diamond Performance / Chevrolet picks up his fourth win of the year. Second place fell to Fisher. Charlie Garrison Jr., Mark Phillips, and Kim Wagner finished off the top five. Fisher won the lone heat race.
Jason Robbins and Tom Davies led out the 25-lap A-Main for the Lane Automotive Michigan Traditional Sprint Car Series. The field of drivers treated the crowd to their traditional 3-wide salute. Then it was time to get the main event underway. Robbins was able to jump out front with the lead early. The race would see only a small number of cautions. Through it all Robbins held his line and never faltered, as he was able to lead the entire event and be crowned the victor.
Robbins earned the win in the Robbins Motorsports machine. He was followed by Steve Irwin who had to settle for second. Mike Galaja, Brett Mann, and Joe Irwin capped off the top five. The winners of the preliminary heat races were Kevin Hawk, Robbins, and Davies.
This Friday June 18th will be Pizza Hut Kids Night at Cherry Raceway where ALL kids 12 & under will get in FREE. The night will also feature bike- give a ways and much more. The racing program will be headlined by the return of the high-powered UMP DIRTcar Late Models. Joining them will be the UMP DIRTcar Modifieds, Lighting Sprints, Stock Cars, Factory Stocks, Four-Cylinder Warriors, and Crossroads Chevrolet Compacts.
Ticket Prices for Friday July 18th are: Adults (13-59): $12.00 – Seniors (60 and Over): $9.00 – Children (6-12): FREE – Kids (5 and Under): FREE – Pit Passes: $25.00.The Pit Gates Open at 5:00p.m. Grandstand Gates Open at 6:00p.m. Practice also starts at 6:00pm. Then after Pre-Race Ceremonies / Invocation / National Anthem(s), Racing Begins approximately at 7:30pm.
