Johnny Van Doorn Wins Best Appearing Car Award at Derby

Snowbal Derby - 12/7/09

Fans at the Speed51.com website voted Johnny VanDoorn's #61 entry as the Best Appearing Car for the 42nd Annual Snowball Derby. It was a bright spot of the weekend for VanDoorn, who wrecked during qualifying, saw his team rebuild their car and then dropped out early in the Last Chance race. Although he missed the Derby, VanDoorn had stayed in town and was able to collect the award in person during pre-race ceremonies. VanDoorn's team will receive a free 51 Sports hero card design for winning the award.

Follow Snowball Derby Qualifying

Check out to see how West Michigan Racers: Johnny VanDoorn and Brian Campbell fair at the Derby: Click on the Title above to watch

Update: 6:46PM Johnny VanDoorn was next to qualify and was on the track coming up to speed when he lost control and hit the wall between turns three and four. His car appears to be damaged extensively. We do not think he has a back-up car. This is a tough break for VanDoorn, who wasn't initially planning on coming down here for the event, but got some sponsorship that allowed him to make the trip down from the midwest.

Johnny VanDoorn 2009 CRA Champion

VanDoorn and New Team Work Their Way to Championship

Salem, IN (October 31, 2009) – At the beginning of February this year Johnny VanDoorn was not sure where or if he would be racing in 2009. After an excellent Rookie season with the CRA Super Series, in which he won the 2007 Rookie of the Year race, finished second in the points with two wins and nine Top 5 finishes the communication between him and the car owner was not there in 2008. The 2008 season was disappointing for him and the owner as he had only one win and two Top 5 finishes.

As he was evaluating what to do in 2009 he talked to a long time family friend, Jim Ten Brink. VanDoorn told Ten Brink he was not having fun, and as a 21 year old he felt racing should be fun. Ten Brink then had a radical proposal, he would put together a super late model team to run the CRA Super Series with John as the driver. With the deal coming together in February, (they did not get the car until mid-March) it did not leave much time to get the car ready for the first race at Anderson Speedway on April 11th.

The team consisting of John VanDoorn, his 16-year-old brother Butch, Dean Huizenga, Adam Chase, Dirk Redder and Jim Ten Brink went to work. John worked with his employer, Port City Race Cars to get a chassis; they then went to another long time friend, Jack Jerovsek of Baker Engineering for an engine and built their car. With many long nights, busy weekends and some of the team giving up their spring break to get the car ready for the first race.

"We started with the goal of winning a race this year and being competitive throughout the season." Ten Brink stated. "We had decided we had enough to run the first half the season, with limited sponsorship, and see where we stand then."

The first race at Anderson turned out to be a harbinger of good things to come as VanDoorn patiently raced from his second row staring position, chasing veteran racer Eddie Hoffman for many laps, until Hoffman slid up the track and VanDoorn slipped under him for the lead and never looked back, going on for the win over Boris Jurkovic by nearly 2 seconds on the tight ¼ mile track. Van Doorn then summed up the teams feelings in Victory Lane saying, "New year, new car, new engine, new owner, it was great to come out and win. I am proud of my guys, they did not give up on me, helped put this deal together in just a couple of months, and many of these are the guys from my old team. I really have to thank my sponsors Accelerate Liquid Deicing Solution, Port City Race Cars, Baker Engineering and Pro Cam for all they have done. I am real excited to be back in Victory Lane, it is a new adventure."

The new Kaos Racing team left Anderson second in the point chase and they never fell below that all year. When the team went to Salem Speedway on June 27th they were in a tie for first with three time CRA Super Series Champion Scott Hantz. Needing a solid run on one of the few tracks Hantz has not won on in a CRA Super Series race, VanDoorn won by over five and a half seconds over Hantz to take a slim lead. While Hantz would come back to tie the championship race one more time VanDoorn never trailed again.

"We take pride in our maintenance program." VanDoorn said. "We check and recheck everything before each race. And we feel like it showed with us having only one DNF all year, ironically in the last race of the year."

The team is very proud of what they accomplished this year as a start-up team that was under funded, and sometimes struggled to get to the track. "The CRA bonus program, paying out to us for first place during the season really went a long way to helping us get to the track for all the races." Ten Brink stated. The team pulled to the track in a crew cab pickup with a gooseneck trailer, all of them sharing one hotel room on many road trips.

Their truck caused one of the well-funded traveling teams from Alabama to comment to them after VanDoorn turned a very fast lap in qualifying "Guys, we just got our butts kicked by four hillbillies in a pickup truck." The Kaos team adopted this as a badge of honor the rest of the season.

"We would not be here without the hard work by John, Butch, and the whole team, they really stuck together this year." Ten Brink commented. "Our sponsors were great, Baker Engineering, Port City Race Cars, Magic Transportation, Rip It Energy Drink, R&R Wireloom and Accelerate Liquid Deicing Solution made this all work. Jack from Baker Engineering really helped us with the engines, and Harley at Port City helped John with the chassis. We raced this year with only one chassis, so we were worried about bending it and really worked to make sure it stayed straight."

"I really want to say thank you to all my sponsors, Jim, and the crew." VanDoorn said. "There were so many people who helped us this year, when we had problems at Winchester before qualifying, DeWaine and Brent McGunegill were extremely helpful even though it was not one of their engines and we were pitted next to Scott Hantz. He and his crew helped us a lot even though we were in a tight race for the point championship."

Ten Brink pointed to the sense of family and friends in the CRA Super Series as one of his favorite parts of participating. "Everyone helping each other, laughing and having fun off the track and racing hard on it. I really feel like when you have beaten these guys you have beaten the best. I do not know of anyone better than Hantz, and I am proud to have raced against them. We were hoping to just be competitive, to win is unbelievable."

MLive.com Driver of the Year

Portland's Dustin Daggett voted MLive.com Driver of the Year
By Steve Kaminski | The Grand Rapids Press
October 28, 2009, 9:00AM

Dustin Daggett Dustin Daggett often left the competition in the dust during the spring and summer months, winning 11 of the SOD Sprints on Dirt races.

The open wheel driver from Portland had the field covered in the polls, too.

Daggett was the big winner of the MLive.com Driver of the Year contest, which gave fans an opportunity to vote for the top Michigan driver in 2009.

The contest was divided into two weeks, with the first week offering a list of 10 drivers. The top five vote-getters advanced to round two, with the overall winner earning MLive.com's Driver of the Year honors. Daggett led the way in both polls, earning 25 percent in the first and 42 percent in the second.

Daggett swept all three races at Crystal Raceway and I-96 Speedway. He also won one race each at Waynesfield, Ohio, Mount Pleasant, Merritt, Hartford and Merlin, Ontario. He has 64 career Sprints on Dirt wins over the past seven seasons.

Thanks for your participation, the first poll drew 2,294 votes, with the second earning 7,358.

I have received e-mails from readers asking if The Finish Line plans to return with the weekly driver rankings in 2010, and the answer is yes. The first rankings should come out in mid-April just after the state's tracks have thawed out.

Do me one favor, though.

E-mail me or post nominations when the new season gets rolling. More than 40 tracks statewide run each weekend and I can get to only one or two a weekend. Your help is much appreciated.

God Speed Sandy TenBrink

(Sandy in the Yellow volunteering her help at Winston Speedway's "Kids Night in 2004")

It comes with great sadness to inform the West Michigan Racing community the passing of Sandy TenBrink after an extended illness. Sandy was an icon to the West Michigan Racing community. Her employment, volunteer efforts and genuine integrity throughout the years with Thunderbird Raceway and Winston Speedway are going to be hard to replace. Sandy always had a kind word and a smile on her face. She exemplified the phrase "Live life to the fullest"

My thoughts and prayers are with her family.

Kyle Busch Wins 38th Annual Winchester 400

Van Doorn and Other CRA Champions Are Also Decided

CRA PR Report
Kyle Busch had chances to win the Winchester 400 on a couple of occasions before, finishing second in 2008, and running for the lead with only a few laps to go a few years before only to have a wheel come off. The 2009 CRA Super Series 2009 Winchester 400 trophy, the coveted Winchester Rifle, went home with him as he raced out to the lead and stayed there. Brian Rievley was second, Terry Fisher, Jr. third, Jason Dietsch fourth and Chuck Barnes, Jr. fifth on Sunday afternoon.

"It's awesome, a great honor to win. I have been trying for this for a few years, and we have now won it." An obviously elated Busch stated. "We had a scare late, but we got it handled. The 17 (Gabehart) was fast and the 67 (Fultz) was fast but we knew it was the car that got to the end with tires left that would win."

Chris Gabehart took the early lead and ran out to a strong lead before Busch started to reel him in and took the lead on the 61st lap. From there Busch only gave up the lead once under green. Gabehart was a strong challenger until hitting debris and damaging a spindle. Jeff Fultz, the only driver to take the lead from Busch under green had his day end when his transmission went out on a restart on lap 288.

Chris Gabehart set a new track record with a time of 14.935 seconds, the first CRA Super Series driver to turn a lap at Winchester Speedway under 15.000 seconds, to win the EDCO Welding Fast Qualifier Award. Johnny VanDoorn bounced back from near disaster with a failed engine in practice to change his engine and set second fast time at 15.106 seconds. Danny Jackson was third, Chuck Barnes, Jr. fourth, and Boris Jurkovic fifth.

Kyle Busch and Jim Crabtree, Jr. took the Hoosier Racing Tire Performance Awards. Robert Maynor earned the Lane Automotive/ISKY Racing Cams Hard Charger Award moving up 21 spots to finish 11th. Jeff Fultz was the Kingen Interstate Express Halfway Leader Award. The K&N Filters Rookie of the Race Award went to Nick Lay as the highest finishing rookie.

Kenny Tweedy received the EMF Corp. “That’s Racing Award” for the hit he took after spinning in a tangle with a lapped car. The Safety Solutions Tough Luck Award went to Danny Jackson. The ARP Bodies Cool Move of the Race Award went to Chuck Barnes, Jr. after he raced the last 300 laps of the race without power steering.

Johnny VanDoorn started the day 42 points ahead of Scott Hantz, always a favorite to run well at Winchester, in the race for the CRA Super Series Season Championship. Hantz dropped out on the 94th lap when he started to slide coming out of turn four and bumped a car he was passing. He spun into the inside front stretch wall and was out of the race on the 94th lap.

VanDoorn was in second place when he came in on a red flag due to falling oil pressure. His crew found an oil line holder had snapped allowing the oil line to fall onto to the header and it had a hole burnt in it. They did not have the hose available, and he was forced to retire, in 23rd place on lap 131, but had enough lead to win the 2009 series Championship for his Kaos Motorsports team.

On Friday and Saturday, VanDoorn was the fastest in practice. Then his engine gave up just as the first practice ended Saturday. His crew with help from a different engine builder and the Hantz team changed the engine on pit road, and he got back out to qualify.

Afterward he said. "I am really upset about today, we had a great car and it was just coming in and we were looking great for the rest of the race. This was a pretty good year. As a new team we made some rookie mistakes, we learned some things that worked and we are getting ready for the future. I cannot thank everybody who helped enough, my sponsors, the crew, Dirk, Butch, Dean, Adam, and anyone else that has laid a hand on the car this year. I also have to say a special thank you to DeWayne and Brett McGunegill they really helped us out yesterday when we had to change an engine."

Tyler Roahrig is the 2009 CRA Super Series K&N Filters Rookie of the Year. “I need to thank several people, my Dad, Grandpa, Jim, Hooven, Andrew and Matt. It was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I learned a lot this year, it has made me a better racer when I race at home.”

The next event for the CRA Super Series is the Nashville All-American Weekend a 250 lap non-points event at the Fairgrounds Speedway at Nashville, TN on November 1. Practice on Friday, October 30, then practice and qualifying on October 31. The CRA Street Stocks and Howe CRA Late Model Sportsman will have special 50 lap non-points races on Saturday also. On Sunday the CRA Super Series will once again be part of this special weekend in $10,000 to win race.

VanDoorn See Highs and Lows at Winchester 400

Coopersville's Johnny VanDoorn had a roller coaster weekend. Starting out he was the fastest in practice only to see a motor sour. VanDoorn's team scrambled to replace the motor and were able to qualify second. In the race Vandoorn ruptured an oil line regulating him to a 23rd place finish. VanDoorn's only consolation was his points lead was being challenged by Scott Hantz who was in a wreck on lap 94 and finished in the 26th position. UNOFFICIALLY Johnny VanDoorn is the 2009 CRA Champion!

Checkered Flag Marketing and the ALS Association Michigan Chapter would like to thank all of the fans, drivers, and tracks for their support of this event. The racing community has always stepped up and in this case they did as well.
Mike Nipke owner of the ArenaCar said “This event was very exciting and even though we were not able to give someone the opportunity to drive the car for the season the big winners are the unfortunate people that have the disease and the families that watch them suffer.”

The raffle is over, but the fight to find a cure for this disease is not. Checkered Flag Marketing will continue to build awareness and funds to fight this disease. With the help of Wyser Innova-tive Products the ArenaCar will be racing this fall and winter at the Delta Plex and will be car-rying the ALS Association Logo on the hood. Come on out and support Dave Sensiba the driver of the ALS Association, Wyser Innovative Products, Checkered Flag Marketing number 46 ArenaCar. Look for another opportunity to drive an ArenaCar Ride for the 2010/11 season. We will begin promoting this ride earlier in the season. The goal for the new promotion will be to get more businesses to support the ride and not setting a minimum tickets sold. This will make it so that one lucky winner will get the opportunity to drive the car.

Vote for MLive Driver of the Year

Cast your vote for MLive.com Driver of the Year
By Steve Kaminski | The Grand Rapids Press
October 08, 2009, 11:20AM

Every week for the past five months, I have ranked the top 10 drivers in the state on The Finish Line. But with the season wrapping up for most tracks this weekend and next, it is time to select the MLive.com Driver of the Year.

However, this is too big of a job to do all by myself. There are thousands of drivers statewide, so I’m going to need your help.

You are invited to vote on the best driver below. Voting will be open for about a week. I will check the list at 10 p.m. on Oct. 15 to find out who the top five drivers are. We will then create a second poll, and you will have a chance to vote from that final group of five to choose the overall winner.

It’s kind of like the ArtPrize, minus the $250,000 and the art. However, we will send the winner a plaque and do a write-up on him on The Finish Line.

Keep in mind that the driver must be from Michigan, and I excluded anyone running in NASCAR, such as Brad Keselowski of Rochester Hills. The goal all season has been to focus on the tracks and drivers who race in your communities.

Narrowing the field down to 10 was extremely difficult, but we had to cut the list at some point. This list could have easily been 20 drivers or more long.

Also keep in mind that the state of Michigan offers an exciting mix of racing, from asphalt tracks to dirt to drag racing, and I wanted the list to reflect that. Drivers who found success at multiple tracks were more likely to grab my attention, too.

Here are the nominees:

Brian Campbell, Wyoming -- Leads the ASA Late Model Challenge Division point standings with seven top-five finishes.

Dustin Daggett, Portland -- Captured 11 victories in the SOD Sprints on Dirt Series.

Marc Kurth, Gaylord -- Won 17 Modified features and claimed championships at Cherry Raceway and Merritt Speedway.

Dona Marcoullier, Houghton Lake -- Rolled up 15 Late Model feature wins at tracks like Mount Pleasant Speedway and Merritt Speedway, placing him third in the nation in UMP Late Model racing for most wins.

Bill May, Muskegon -- Earned championships in the Factory Stock division at Winston and Thunderbird and leads the UMP national point standings with nine wins.

John McCaul, Montague -- Leads the nation in UMP Modified feature wins with 28 and is fourth in the national point standings.

Rusty Schlenk, Jackson -- Has won nine races and is third in the nation in UMP Late Model points.

Terry Senneker Jr., Wayland -- Dominated Kalamazoo Speedway Late Model racing, winning eight features and the championship.

Johnny Van Doorn, Coopersville -- Continues to lead the CRA Super Series point standings.

Brad Zaskowski, Belmont -- Second overall in the National Hot Rod Association’s Super Stock point standings and won a national event in Louisiana.

Ross Meeuwsen loses Chet, but wins Late Model championship at Berlin Raceway
By Steve Kaminski The Grand Rapids Press

September 26, 2009, 11:55PM

MARNE -- Late Model driver Ross Meeuwsen of Zeeland couldn’t have had a worse day, and yet, it couldn’t have been more perfect.Meeuwsen wrapped up his second consecutive track championship by three points over Terry VanHaitsma of Hudsonville, even though VanHaitsma won Saturday night’s Chet, a 100-lap feature race which served as the division’s season finale. Meeuwsen needed to finish third to stave off VanHaitsma, and he beat Chris Anthony to the stripe by less than one second to take third.Meeuwsen entered the program with a 27-point lead over VanHaitsma, but his day started miserably when he was involved in a wreck during practice, and he and his crew had to hustle to make the repairs. However, Meeuwsen only qualified ninth and missed the fast car dash, and his lead dwindled to 17 heading into the feature.“The guys had to work on it for three hours, and it still isn’t right,” Meeuwsen said. “But I guess it’s over now. I knew I had to finish third, and it wouldn’t turn. It was bad tight. I couldn’t go anywhere. “This was too close for comfort. But this means a lot to our race team and sponsors.”VanHaitsma held off Tom Thomas for his second win of the season.“It’s bittersweet,” VanHaitsma said. “You can’t look back and say what would I have done different. I wish it would have turned out the other way, but to win the Chet is a big win. It is a very big win.”

Saturday’s program also served as the season finale for the traveling Auto Value Super Sprints Series. Jason Blonde of Litchfield locked up his third consecutive championship when he finished fourth in the 30-lap feature, which allowed Blonde to edge out Chad Goff by four points. It was a night Derek Snyder of Dansville will never forget, too. He captured his first career feature race.“This is awesome,” said Snyder, who is in his third season with the Super Sprints. “We have struggled all year long, and we struggled last year with engine problems. We really worked our butts off to get this first win under our belt. “We have set fast time about four times here, but we just haven’t been able to get the feature figured out. But we changed a bunch of stuff to see if it worked, and it worked.”

Championship Weekend opened Friday with Ray VanAllsburg of Wyoming and Brian Tillema of Byron Center clinching championships. VanAllsburg finished second in the Super Stock feature behind Brian Wiersma. That gave the 24-year veteran his first track title. VanAllsburg’s late-season surge allowed him to improve from fifth to first in the season’s final month.Tillema continued his domination in the Pro Stock class. Tillema won his third track title after placing third in the feature behind Weston Jewett and runner-up Justin Regnerus.Brandon Hermiller pulled off one of the best moves of the night when he went from third to first on the final lap to win 15-lap Young Guns feature. Hermiller drove around Kelsey Steele and leader Mitch Meppelink to make it three-wide in turn three and beat the field back to the checkered flag for his third win of the season.

West Michigan Off Road Cars Make Their Final Appearance of 2009 This Saturday as Well!!

ALS Benefit: Thank You

On behalf of ALS ( Michigan Chapter), Ed Falbe, Rick Huisken, and especially the Chichester family we would like to personally thank everyone for attending the Throwin Dirt Shootout to benefit ALS (Lou Gerigs disease). The show was a success and the donations were generous. We hope everyone had a great time and enjoyed themselves. There was many people who made this happen and if you are not thanked in this letter we hope that we thanked you several times in person. These are a few of the buisinesses and people that really helped us:

Winston Speedway (Thanks a million Tom and family for supporting us and making it all possible)

Advanced Tooling Systems

AAA Lawncare

Redline Graphix

Fricanos pizza ( And all the Alpine Ave.Tuesday Night Cruisers)

Gresham Driving Aids

K+M Northfield Dodge

Port City Racing

Carl Juusola

Stewart/ Haas Racing Team

Jeff Gordon Racing Team

Angel Care Inc.

The Racing Show

West Michigan Racing.com

Steve Kaminski

The Grand Rapids Press

The Muskegon Chronicle

Andy O’Riley

Napa 4 mile

To all the individual donors that helped us out with raffle tickets sales, buying the decals, and auction items, I do not know what to say, but you are special people, for stepping up in this bad economy. With the help of all we were able to purchase a handicap equipped van to aid the Chichester family and other families stricken with ALS plus make a sizable donation to aid in research to find a cure for ALS.

When we think we have it bad, there are stories out there that make us appreciate how good we have it. We realized this weekend that Ryan and Kyle Hamm need our thoughts and prayers. Their mother is in a battle with this terrible disease alongside the Chichesters. Another family we need to remember is the Tenbrinks. Most of us found out this weekend that Sandy will have to battle Cancer.

Please remember that if you have an avenue to help someone please do so because every little bit matters against the fight of these horrible diseases. Anytime an effort is put forth it does make a difference.

Sincerely,

Rick Huisken

Great Lakes Nationals: Crystal Motor Speedway

September 19th Results!

Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway was the final event of the season with the running of the 17th annual Great Lakes Nationals. Approximately 188 cars and a full grandstand of fans were on hand to watch spectacular racing that is expected at this event. The race was sponsored by Victor Reinz Gaskets, Engine Pro, and Mellings Engine Parts.

The first feature was the Port City Pro Stock division. Mike Husted got out front early and looked smooth. Ryan Kent, Chris Rinard, Jimmy Hale Jr, and Chaney Newland all were tight to his bumper, but unable to get around the leader. Hale fell back but then mounted another charge forward and was able to thread his way to the front to take home the win over Rinard, Newland, Vern Buskirk, Josh Frye, Kent, Nate Jones, Jeff Gibson, Renton Hurley, and Keith Gentz. Brent Hollenbeck won the B Main with heats falling to Newland, Kent, and Rinard.

The Michigan Traditional Sprints were up next as they ended their season and the championship was at stake. After a pretty bad looking wreck in the first lap of the feature that brought a red for about 20 minutes, Joe Bares worked his way to the lead and then took off to beat back Mike Galajda to take the win. Steve Irwin pocketed the season championship and came home in fifth tonight after an outstanding season run.

Jeff Loomis took the early lead in the Smokers Club of Mt Pleasant Street Stocks but Will Stanley began to challenge with Robb Sternberg soon joining the fray to make it three wide for the lead but Loomis was able to hold everyone back. Stanley suffered a flat tire that took him out of the race after a good run and season. Loomis and Sternberg battled all race long, as they had to dice through heavy lapped traffic as they fought for the lead. A caution tightened the field right at the half way point with Sternberg out front on the restart. After a great fight Robb Sternberg held on to win with Ralph Sternberg grabbing second, followed by Dan Hersey, Kevin Rohn, Kyle Prochazka, Joseph Pomeroy, James Billett, Bobby Lynn, Loomis, and, Randy Radabaugh. Ryan Lewis scored the B Main win with heat gold going to Loomis, Rohn, and Robb Sternberg.

Tim Sooy jumped out front of the Port City Pro Trucks for a couple of laps but it didn't take too long and Chris Verhaar to over take him. Sooy caught the wall, bringing out the caution and bunching the field. With about five to go, Kevin Deal began to challenge Verhaar but had to fall back when he suffered a flat tire. Ian Knodertzek came up late to challenge but Verhaar held on to win over Knodertzek, Ashlee Scott, Scott Nieman, Brent Neverth, Dave Peters, Jason Parkhurst, Joe Nieman, Eugene Decker, and Gordon Snyder. Verhaar and Knodertzek took home heat wins.

Richard Melton grabbed the lead in the Races On The Web Flinn Stock event with Rob Nieman and Charles Petersen second and third. Melton and Petersen began to move through heavy traffic as Nieman fell back with a soft tire. Melton got behind lapped traffic and Petersen grabbed the lead, only to lose it half a lap later in traffic. A car in the wall bunched the field with just two short laps to go. When the green fell for the last time, Melton jumped out front but scrubbed the wall as he came in for the white. Petersen took the lead and then the win with Nieman second and then Melton, Tyler McGhan, Lee Zahm, Austin Bean, Bob Whitcomb, Randall Stevens, Chase Roberts, and Neil Zeigler. Bob Whitcomb and Gavin Parks scored heat wins.

The Kentucky Fried Chicken Late Model race was a 40 lap affair and the early lead went to Carl Ries, Andy Sprague and Jay Van Dyke. Ries pulled out to a comfortable lead while Van Dyke and Sprague battled for second. A caution at lap ten bunched the field but Ries jumped back out front with Sprague and Dona Marcoullier making up the top three. Marcoullier made it to second and began to slowly move to the front with Sprague and Van Dyke just behind. Marcoullier gave Ries everything he could but Ries was able to hold on to take the win over Marcoullier, Sprague, Van Dyke, Brian Nickerson, Steve Fairbanks, Scott Baker, Zack Olger, Kyle Borgman, and Scott Haney. Baker and Dusen won B Main features with Tim Stott, Kevin Nelson Jr, Rich Neiser, and Zach Olger taking heat wins.

The final event of 2009 was the Engine Pro IMCA Modified feature and the opening lap was a wild one when Toby Steele did a wild flip and ended up on his roof. Steele was unhurt but unable to continue. Joe Fowler grabbed the early lead with Brennan Bowen close behind. Chad Maurer started to the rear of the field and began his attempt to secure the track championship. Maurer had to keep Bowen within five positions to bring home the title as he slowly began his climb forward. Don Rohn was running toward the front pack but he dropped a driveshaft, taking him out after a good run. The restart found Fowler and Josh Borton out front. The caution waved once again as Maurer slowed and then pulled to the infield with mechanical problems, leaving the field and the door open for Bowen to win the championship with Bowen having to stay five positions ahead of Maurer. Myron DeYoung also had a great run going, moving up to third only to blow an engine and falling out of the race. Fowler ran a rock solid line for the remaining laps and held on to win over Borton, Bowen, Greg Wiles, Brody Bowser, Aaron Raby, Chad Wernette, Rusty Zeigler, Jason Maurer, and Rich White. Unofficially, Bowen claimed the Engine Pro IMCA Modified title. Jerry Hunt and Chad Maurer won B main events with heats going to Cliff Denman, Bowser, Wiles, and J.R. Schmid.

This event ends the 2009 season for Crystal Motor Speedway and the promoters and employees of the track wish to thank everyone who supported them through some tough economic times. Full pits and grandstands were the norm this season and the CMS family thanks everyone for their support. The 2009/2010 banquet will be held in mid January. Details will be available on the website crystalmotorspeedway.com or further information can be obtained by calling the track at 989.235.5200.

Berlin Raceway Storyline: September 19th

Meeuwsen, Anderson, Jewett, Scheid and Ensing all add to win totals

Marne, MI— It was a full night of feature racing with all five of Berlin’s local divisions taking the track. Taking home the trophies were Gabe Ensing (Young Gun), Jason Scheid (Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder), Weston Jewett (Kerkstra Services Pro Stock), Denny Anderson (Engine Pro Super Stock) and Ross Meeuwsen (Coors Light Late Model).

Kicking off the night were the cars of the Engine Pro Super Stock division; #18 Denny Anderson was on the pole and #55 Dave Lake was on his outside. Anderson picked up where he left off last week, leading the field while Lake was fending off #51 Justin Ryan. The first caution came out on lap 3, #8 Billy Eppink spun coming out of turn 2. Anderson was pulling away again after the restart and there was tight racing for positions two through six. On lap 9, the top two in points, #26 Chris Muyskens and #77 Andrew Nylaan were fighting for 5th. Nylaan was good in turns 1 & 2 while Muyskens was good in turns 3 & 4. The pair raced side by side until lap 16 until Nylaan cleared him. Back in the field, the battle for eighth was heating up with #F1 Randy Veldman, #1 Brian Wiersma, #13 James Haney and #98 Bob Bliss; Haney was the first car to break from that pack. The next battle for position was for 4th with between Lake and Nylaan, with five to go, Nylaan took the position. Ryan was catching up to Anderson, but he ran out of time to get there, Anderson got his fourth win by .501 seconds and the rest of the top ten were Ryan, #5 Ray VanAllsburg, Nylaan, #10 Bob Spencer, Lake, Muyskens, Haney, Wiersma and #15 Garison Jewett.

The Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder took the track next with #51 Mel Parsons and # 29 John Norder on the front row. Parsons took off with the lead, but caution was out on lap 2 for the #20 of Tyler Nawrocki, he went off of the backstretch. Before the cars completed a lap, caution was out again for #81 Mike Reavis spinning out of turn 4. On the restart, #01 Rob Shoemaker was challenging Parsons on the outside while #16 Ben Kleis made it three wide on the inside at the line. Shoemaker took the lead and from second on back, there was tight racing. Kleis lost some ground, but gathered it back and after splitting the #32 of Jim Woltanski with Shoemaker, Kleis took the lead and Shoemaker fell back. The #100 Jason Scheid was coming through the field fast, taking 2nd from #13 Dan Reimersma. Lap 11 saw the second caution of the night for the #62 Richard Church spinning. Kleis got a great restart and with five to go, Scheid was catching Kleis one tenth of a second per lap. The pair split the lapped car of Church, Scheid took the lead and went on the get his second win of the season. The rest of the top 10 were Kleis, #14 Jason DeVos, #9 Nick Curtis, Reimersma, #19 Dave Avink, #024 Cole Roelofs, #354 Chris McKinley, Shoemaker and Hastings.

Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks were up next for their 25 lap feature, #7 Kevin DeGood and #40 Dave Culter led the field to the green flag. DeGood was the early leader, but was being challenged early by #88 Tony Davis. Fast qualifier, #50 Justin Regnerus was coming though the field, joining the battle for the lead on lap 10, as did #51 Weston Jewett and #76 Brian Tillema. Three laps later, Jewett was the new leader and Regnerus was working on Tillema for 3rd. The battle for second got three-wide on the backstretch with Tillema on the outside, DeGood in the middle and Regnerus on the inside on lap 15; Regnerus backed off, Tillema got by DeGood and the field settled in to single-file racing. The first caution of the race happened on lap 21, the #36 of Ken Smith, Jr spun off of the front stretch. Jewett got a good restart and Tillema and Regnerus were fighting hard for second. With one lap to go, the #7 of Alan Fricke spun on the backstretch. That resulted in a green-white-checker and Jewett was able to hold off a hard-charging Tillema to get his second win of the season. Tillema got second, Regnerus third and the rest of the top ten were DeGood, Davis, Cutler, #20 Dave Hull, #78 Will Olmsted, #89 Kirk Meissner and #00 Dennis Mann.

The Coors Light Late Models took the track next, #27 Billy Shotko started on the pole with #28 Scott Thomas on his outside. Shotko retained his position and the field raced clean. On lap 24, Shotko was enjoying a 4.5 second lead over Scott Thomas. The first caution of the race came on lap 30 when the #54 of Chris Nash and #37 Terry Senneker wrecked coming out of turn 4. The race was red flagged for clean-up and then field was bunched back up for a double-file restart. Shotko was back to the lead and #32 Ross Meeuwsen was up to second. With 15 laps to go, Shotko had almost a two-second lead and with 11 to go, that went away. The #7 of Justin Claucherty spun on coming out of turn 4 after contact with Meeuwsen. This time, Meeuwsen got past Shotko and started to pull away to get his third win of the season. Shotko had to settle for second and the rest of the top ten were #21 Terry VanHaistma, #55 Chris Anthony, #82 Tom Thomas, Scott Thomas, #19 Nick Shotko, #61 Alec Carll, #222 Caleb Bisacky and #71 Kyle Ballard.

The Young Guns were the final feature of the night; #19 Dalton Haney and #18 Mitch Meppelink lead the field to the green flag. The #32 of Gabe Ensing took the lead and Haney had a flat tire. The #101 of Lauren Bush brought out the first and only caution of the race when she came to a stop in turn 4. Ensing continued to lead and the #16 of Kelsey Steele and #6 Brandon Hermiller traded spots twice and they raced the last six lap single file and spread-out. Ensing got his fourth win of the season and the rest of the finishing order was Steele, Hermiller, Meppelink, Bush and Haney.

Season Championships at I-96: September 19th

September 19th, is our Championship night for all classes and racing should be great.

We all know someone or have personally experienced the pain, suffering and challenges of beating cancer. This year I-96 Speedway is proud to be hosting our First Annual American Cancer Society " Race for Life " event.

In order to make this a successful event we need help from the community. Please bring a family member or a friend to this weekend race to support those whose Race for Life is far greater.

Travis Stemler (modified car #2) and his sponsors are getting his car wrapped in Pink to support breast cancer awareness. Travis and the track are selling stickers for his car and others - The stickers have room on them to put your name or someone special and will be applied to the cars before race time. A $10 donation is asked for each sticker; but what you feel comfortable with is ok.

Late model 2 seater rides will be available after the races with the proceeds going to ACS.

Fans will also have a chance to race Mike Mouch and a few drivers this night in go karts on 1/8 mile track in front of the grand stands - proceeds going to ACS.

Don’t forget to wear your awareness ribbons; Lavender is the color for general cancer awareness. For additional ribbon colors and their meanings http://www.disabled-world.com/disability/awareness/ribbons.php

If you would to help or get involve with us please send me a note:

Berlin Raceway Storyline: September 12th

Needles, Jones, DeVos and Walker visit victory lane
Anderson, Regnerus and Hermiller add to win totals

Marne, MI-- Berlin Raceway played host to the Port City Racing Classic this weekend and after the drivers had a chance to fine-tune their cars at the Thursday night practice, preliminary races took place on Friday night as well as a Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder and USA Modified feature. Jason Scheid broke in to victory lane in the 4-Cylinder A feature and Jay Platz took the B feature win. Jake Meyerink was victorious in the USA Modified race and the numerous heat and dash races set the field for Saturday night's action.

The Young Guns started the night of feature racing off with a 20-lap, caution filled race. #18 Mitch Meppelink had the lead early, but the #32 of Gabe Ensing was quickly catching. The first caution of the night happened on lap 3; #101 Lauren Bush spun while trying to pass #19 Dalton Haney. As the field tried to complete the lap after the restart, Meppelink and Ensing spun in turn 3. On the restart #6 Brandon Hermiller and #16 Kelsey Steele broke away from the field until caution came out again in lap 8; Meppelink and Ensing spun again and this time Meppelink backed his car in to the frontstretch wall. After the cars were restarted, the racing was single-file and Steel was catching Hermiller. Two laps later, caution was out again, Bush went off of the backstretch. The cars were reset and Hermiller got a great restart and Steele was trying to fend off Ensing for second. Lap 13 saw the final caution of the race, Meppelink spun again in turn 3. Hermiller got another great restart and went on to get his third win of the season. The rest of the finishing order was Steele, Ensing, Bush, Haney and Meppelink.

The Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder B feature was next for their 20-lap feature, #84 Dave Blazo and #7X Terry Lange brought the field to the green flag. Blazo lead and #13 Craig Snoeyink was not far behind. #07 Clayton Brown quickly took the lead with #51 Grady Gerken, Snoeyink and #80 Daryl Davis all trying to get around him. Gerken and Brown broke away from the field, but both cars dropped out of the race, handing the lead to #20W Jackson Walker. Walker held off the competition to take his first feature win. The rest of the top five were Snoeyink, #62 Paul Ritchie, #T11 Jim Rhodes and Gerken. The A feature rolled next, #47 Don McNabb and #354 Chris McKinley started on the front row. This feature had a lot of trouble getting started with the caution flag flying three times before a lap was completed. They finally got going after starting single-file and #10 Kyle Hamm jumped out with a great lead and every car behind him was fighting for position. With 10 laps to go, Hamm had lead of just over 4 seconds, but #14 Jason DeVos was cutting into it. Lap 14 saw the fourth caution of the race, #12 Angela DeVos was off of the backstretch. After the restart, Hamm dropped out of the race and that gave the lead to Jason DeVos. #100 Jason Scheid was looking to get his second win in as many days, blowing past #7 Ryan Hamm for second and going after DeVos. With three laps to go, Scheid caught DeVos, with two to go, he was up to his rear quarterpanel and on the last lap the pair were side-by-side. DeVos held him off to get his first win of the season. The rest of the top tern were Scheid, #13 Dan Reimersma, Ryan Hamm, #6 Ben Kleis, #01 Rob Shoemaker, #024 Cole Roelofs, #9 Nick Curtis, #71 Paul Namey and #19 Dave Avink.

Next was the 40-lap Engine Pro Super Stock feature with #13 James Haney and #18 Denny Anderson on the front row. As soon as they completed a lap, caution was out for the spinning car of #1 Brian Wiersma. Haney and Anderson stayed side-by-side for the lead and #5 Ray VanAllsburg was also in contention. Just three laps later, caution was out again, #5 Cal Castle and Wiresma spun. Anderson took the lead on lap 8 and then the field spread out to single file racing until lap 21 when #12 Josh Slade brought out the third caution for his spin coming out of turn 4. Anderson continued to lead and with seven to go, it was a three car race between Anderson, VanAllsburg and Haney. They took the checkered flag three-wide with Anderson pulling off the win. VanAllsburg was .001 seconds behind the leader with Haney .067 seconds behind. The rest of the top ten were Muyskens, #15 Garison Jewett, #77 Andrew Nylaan, #55 Dave Lake, #98 Bob Bliss, #11 Nick Bonstell and Wiersma.

Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks took the grid next, #36 Ken Smith, Jr. was on the pole and on his outside was #15 Scott Root. Root led and the field raced single file; #50 Justin Regnerus was giving chase, cutting into Root's lead every lap and eventually took it from him on lap 12. Root wasn't giving up and the pair raced side by side. Regnerus got the lead back when they split the #X car of Matt VanHorssen and Root fell back to fourth. The first caution of the race came out on lap 19, #61 Richard DeJong spun and collected the #48 of Dave D'Avignon. After the restart, Regnerus had almost a one-second lead and the battle was on for second between #76 Brian Tillema, Root and #51 Weston Jewett. Their battle let Regnerus cruise to his fifth victory of the season. The rest of the top ten were Root, Jewett, Tillema, Cutler, Smith, Jr., #88 Tony Davis, #7 Kevin DeGood, #78 Will Olmsted and #00 Dennis Mann.

Fifty laps were next on the list for the USA Modified and starting on the front row were #7 Scott Tomasik and #98 Bob Curry. Curry was the leader and the rest of the field raced side-by-side. It didn't take long for #2 Kyle Jones and #11 Brian Nester caught the leader and were fighting for the lead. In traffic, Jones took the lead and began to pull away. By half-way, Jones was leading by almost one second, but he was stuck in traffic which let Nester catch up. #44 Jake Meyerink caught the leaders in traffic on lap 30 and he went after Nester for second. With those two battling for position, Jones was able to get the win. Nester, Meyerink, Curry, #78 Travis Eddy, #99 Mark Flairman, #61 Brad Springer, #32 Dan Loughan, #75 Chad Vansparrentak and #14 Tim Burkett rounded out the top ten.

The Coors Light Late Models were the last feature of the night, running 100 laps. Starting out front were the cars of #19 Nick Shotko and #14 Steve Needles. Shotko kept position number 1 and just behind him was the #1 of Randy Sweet. The field settled in to a groove, preparing for the longer race. Sweet was finally able to get by Shotko on lap 25 for the lead and on lap 28, Shotko spun while running second. After the restart, Needles took the point and put some distance between himself and the rest of the field, a three-second lead at one point in the race. The second caution came out on lap 62 for debris in turn 3 and after the restart, the top three cars pulled away from the field. Needles was leading with #32 Ross Meeuwsen and #8 Dakota Carlson just behind him. Cautions three and four were both single-car incidents and after the final caution, it was Meeuwsen who took the lead from Needles. With 17 laps to go, Needles was trying his best to get past Meeuwsen and Meeuwsen was doing everything he could to keep the lead. Lap 87 saw the final caution of the night for contact between #28 Scott Thomas and #222 Caleb Bisacky on the front stretch. Needles took the lead on the restart and there was not enough time for Meeuwsen to catch him. Needles got the win and the rest of the top ten were Meeuwsen, #55 Chris Anthony, Carlson, #21 Terry VanHaitsma, #27 Billy Shotko, #82 Tom Thomas, #71 Kyle Ballard, Nick Shotko and #101 Joe Bush.

Next Saturday, September 19 is a 5-in-1- show! The Coors Light Late Models, Engine Pro Super Stocks, Kerkstra Services Pro Stocks, Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder and Young Guns will all be in action! Tickets are $12 for adults, $5 for kids 6-12 and free for kids five and under. The first race will start at 6 p.m. For more information, please visit www.berlinraceway.com.

Huisken & Falbe Racing: Team up Against ALS

(Update 9/9/2009) Van Purchased for Family!!!!!

Dear Friends

Racers Rick Huisken and Ed Falbe from the West Mich area along with a host of good help took it upon themselves to try and put their resources in racing together to help out people with ALS(Lou Gerigs Disease). They both have ties to families greatly affected by this horrible disease. With the help of Winston Speedway they were given the season ending show to raise money and awareness for ALS. The show will be held Sept 18th +19th, 2009. Along with this event Arena Racing has put together a raffle for a full ride for this season in an Arena car with the proceeds going to West Mich Chapter for ALS.

They are going to promote exposure to the companies or people who help us with this, to the best of their abilities. Tom Sprague has agreed to donate $2 of every ticket sold as well as additional dollars raised. They are trying to get companies to sponsor the prize money for particular races and in turn that money will go towards helping ALS. The race will be named on behalf of companies name. The sponsors will be listed on the West Michigan Racing website as well as other means of exposure. Any form of sponsorship will help. Adanced Tooling has agreed to sponsor for $1000There is a plan to have a silent auction for hats and various autographed articles given to us by Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordon plus the raffle for a season ride in the Arena Car Racing Series.

Please make this benefit a success and be generous in these trying times. There is one family living in Comstock Park they will be helping. (Photo above)Josh spent his senior year in high school caring for his mother who has ALS. Father has been out of the picture since he was 2 years old. He would wake up in the morning and get her breakfast and place her in her wheel chair, go to school and come home for lunch for more care. Through this Josh still managed to be class president. This is who inspired them. Josh was a given a job at Advanced Tooling Systems to help with the famlies finacial needs and go make sure he carries through with the bright future he deserves. (They are trying to get their old Ford Van with a lift replaced with a newer one. They have about 180,000 miles on the current one and it is junk.)

Season Championship Nights Gallore!

Crystal Motor Speedway
It's Season Championship Time!

Believe it or not, the season is almost done and this coming weekend is the final points night for all divisions except the IMCA Mods. There are some titles on the line with close points fights in the Late Models, Pro Stocks, and Pro Trucks while the other two division titles are not yet a done deal. Anything can and just MAY happen! While the forecast looks good right now, as in the past, IF we rain off, the points races end as they stand and divisional champs will be the current points leaders.

Berlin Storyline: August 14th

Dan Reimersma victorious on Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder Night
Jewett, Smith, Lake and Nylaan also win

Marne, MI—With well over 200 laps of racing on tap for the evening, events at Berlin Raceway were set to move quickly and right after the invocation and national anthem, feature racing began.

Up first was the make up 29-lap Kerkstra Services Pro Stock race with #40 Dave Cutler and #51 Weston Jewett on the front row. Jewett took the lead as soon as the flag dropped and making their way through the field were the cars of #50 Justin Regnerus, #76 Brian Tillema and #76 Ryan Gruppen. By lap 17, Jewett began lapping cars and Regnerus was closing in on Cutler for the second position. The two were coming up on lapped traffic and Regnerus caught and passed Cutler for the position. Gruppen was swiftly on Regnerus’ tail while Jewett enjoyed a large lead and his first win of the season by 4.606 seconds. Regnerus and Gruppen crossed the start/finish line door to door with the advantage going to Gruppen. Regnerus got third and the rest of the top ten were Cutler, #36 Ken Smith, Jr., Tillema, #7 Kevin DeGood, #88 Tony Davis, #20 Dave Hull and #78 Will Olmsted.

The 39-lap make-up Engine Pro Super Stock feature rolled next; #15 Mat McClarren started on the pole with #12 Josh Slade on his outside. Slade was quick to take the lead and on lap 8, the #10 of Bob Spencer raced side by side until the first caution of the night came out on lap 21 for the #8 of Billy Eppink, he spun coming out of turn 4. Slade picked the outside on the restart and once the flag dropped, it was Spencer who was leading. They didn’t get a chance to complete the lap because caution was out again for #11 Nick Bonstell spinning on the frontstretch. The restart reverted back to the last completed lap placing Slade back in the lead and this time he took the inside but Spencer still took the lead on the restart. Caution was out again on lap 24 for the #77 Andrew Nylaan who was off of the pace on the backstretch. On this restart, Slade was able to stay with Spencer and #55 Dave Lake joined the battle. Spencer cleared Slade, as did Lake who immediately started pressuring Spencer for the lead. With two laps to go, Lake passed Spencer for the lead and put enough distance between himself and Spencer to get his first win of the season. Spencer, #5 Ray VanAllsburg, Slade, #26 Chris Muyskens, #98 Bob Bliss, #18 Denny Anderson, #44 Brian VanZalen, McClarren and #13 James Haney completed the top ten.

It was Burnips Equipment 4-Cylinder night and that meant the entire field for cars started the 30-lap feature. #28 Phil Speet and #47 Don McNabb lead the 34-car field to the green flag. On lap 2, #T11 Jim Rhodes had a clean spin and #51 drove off of the backstretch, but both were able to recover and there was no caution. The #9 of Nick Curtis and #6 Ben Kleis were doing battle for the lead on lap 5 and Kleis took it soon after they were in lapped traffic. On lap 17, fast qualifier #13 Dan Reimersma, who had started 18th, took the lead from Kleis. The first and only caution came on lap 18 when #47 don McNabb was off the pace and came to a stop on the backstretch. The restarts for this race were double file, Reimersma took the outside and just pulled away from the field. He got his 4th win of the season by just over 4 seconds and the rest of the top ten were #7 Ryan Hamm, #024 Cole Roelofs, Kleis, Curtis, #12 Jay Platz, #354 Chris McKinley, #01 Rob Shoemaker, #19 Dave Avink and #4 Ron Myers.

The second Kerkstra Services Pro Stock Jack DeJong Memorial race rolled next with #88 Tony Davis and #7 Kevin DeGood on the front row. Davis maintained his position while the field jockeyed for positions behind him. Lap 6 saw the first caution of the race; DeGood and Regnerus tangled, spinning in turn 2 and collecting Cutler and Gruppen. This resulted in a red flag for clean-up. Once the race was restarted, Hull took the lead with Smith, Jr. and Jewett not far behind. On lap 12, Smith was side by side with Hull, but the caution flag halted his efforts. Jewett was pressuring Smith on the inside lane and outside lane, but, once again the caution flag came out. Jewett was all over Smith on the restart, but was unable to to past him. Smith got his fourth win of the season and completing the top ten were Jewett, Davis, Tillema, Hull, Cutler, #00 Dennis Mann, #81 Marc Coleman, #26 Brian Thome and #89 Kirk Meissner.

The final Engine Pro Super Stock feature were last with #18 Denny Anderson on the pole and #51 Justin Ryan on the outside. Anderson got a big lead on the start and Lake made his way to second, but before the racing got going, the caution and then red flag came out after Slade’s engine blew on lap 4. The top three of Anderson, Lake and VanAllsburg broke away from the field and by lap 17, Lake was challenging Anderson for the lead. At halfway, those three cars were still trying for the lead and on lap 28, the second caution of the night flew due to contact between Lake and VanAllsburg. Nylaan took the lead on the restart and was able to pull away from the field as Anderson and #11 Nick Bonstell battled for second. Nylaan went on to get his third feature win of the season and the rest of the top ten were Anderson, Bonstell, #98 Bob Bliss, #5 Cal Castle, #26 Chris Muyskens, #8 Billy Eppink, #10 Bob Spencer, VanAllsburg and #13 James Haney.
