John Watson Has Fair Run at Shiawassee
John Watson was in the right spot at the right time Thursday evening at the Shiawassee County Fair as he took the MTS
victory over Keith Love, Greg Dalman, Chuck Wilson and Mike Astauskas with a nice crowd gathered on the hillside viewing area.
Steve Irwin and Chuck Wilson sat on the front row of the 20 lap feature on the unusual track that runs up hill on the back stretch and down coming out of four, and at the drop of the green Irwin shot out to the lead with Watson moving up to 2nd from his 3rd starting position.
The caution appeared on lap nine and at the restart it was Irwin, Watson, Dalman (up from 6th), Keith Love, Wilson, Astrauskas and Mike Berkin.
On the 11th circuit Dalman moved into 2nd and was on the move with his sights set on the leader Irwin as the 26 of Watson was still making a strong run.
Dalman took the lead as the white flag appeared, however, at the same time Irwin made contact with the number 33 of Bobby Jackson resulting in a flip by Irwin.
It was determined that Dalman hit the restart cone earlier and was penalized. This resulted in John Watson taking the lead and with darkness fast approaching, the race was checkered with 19 laps completed before a restart could be lined up.
Watson became the first Canadian winner with the MTS series.
Heat races for the 26 cars on hand were taken by Mike Astrauskas, Greg Dalman and "Downtown" Davey Brown. Joe Irwin won the B main but had motor problems and was unable to start the feature.
