Crystal Motor Speedway: May 2nd

It was a chilly Saturday night at Crystal Motor Speedway but the racing was hot, fast, and furious all night long. A near capacity crowd was on hand to watch 150 cars compete for honors at the famed Crystal clay. The SOD Sprints opened their season at CMS with the first of three of appearances. As he has done so many times in his young career, Dustin Daggett took the lead from the get go and was never headed. Full results of the SOD race will appear on the CMS website soon.

The Late Model feature race saw Brock Cogswell jump out to a commanding lead but about half way through the event, he began to over heat and had to head to the pits, leaving the lead to Mark Andersen. Andersen was hooked and running a great line but faced stiff pressure from a trailing Jay Van Dyke. Andersen was able to hold on to take his first win in 2009. Van Dyke held on for second, followed by Tom Dusen, Carl Ries, Richard Neiser, Justin McNeill, Matt Pickard, Dona Marcoullier, Tim Stott, and Andrew Sprague. Semi-feature wins fell to Scott Haney and Stott while Sprague, Ries, Andersen, and Dusen all posted heat wins.

The Engine Pro IMCA Modified race was another barn burner with tight races through out the field. Milt Montgomery had the field covered early on with Joe Fowler tucked in right behind. Fowler began to make small gains on the leader when a mechanical problem brought Montgomery to the infield, leaving the high flying Fowler to fight off charges from Josh Borton. When it was all said and done, it was Fowler, Borton, Chad Maurer, Chad Wernette, Jimmy Hale, Jr, Brad Roberts, Clifford Denman, Dan Wiggins II, Mickey Carman, Jr., and Don Rohn. Brennan Bowen and Roberts logged semi-feature victories with Milt Montgomery, Fowler, Rusty Zeigler, and Wernette chalked up wins in the heat races.

David Dancer took full advantage of his pole position as he ran a near perfect race on his way to the Pro Truck feature. Tim Wood made a late charge but Dancer was not to be denied in a reinvigorate 2009 Truck field. Wood was followed by Chris Verhaar, Kevin Deal, Scott Nieman, Robert Verhaar, Mike Kresnak, Tim Sooy, Jim Emmons, and Troy Salsbury. Wood and Deal posed for heat wins. Look for this division to get bigger and better as the season goes on!
Dan Corder got out front early in the Big V Photos/Races On The Web Flinn Stock feature and was able to stay out front on his way to his very first feature win in the division. The real battle was for second as last weeks feature winner, Ashlee Scott moved her way from fourth to second in probably the hardest fought play for position of the evening. Scott had to take her moves measure in a couple feet at a time as she was able to stay low on the track and driver under Brady Hollenbeck and Dillon Gentry as they all drove hard into the turns together within inches of each other, providing the crowd a fantastic show. The final top ten were Daniel Corder, Ashlee Scott, Dillon Gentry, Brady Hollenbeck, Rob Nieman, Lee Zahm, Cory Burch, Gavin Parks, Ken Zeigler, and David Shields II. Heat winners were Corder and Burch.

The final event of the night was the Pro Stock feature where Vern Buskirk fond redemption for dropping out of the opening night feature while leading with just three laps to go. Buskirk once again had found the lead but had heavy competition from Barry Rinard. They followed the same path in and out of the turns; with Rinard occasionally draw nearly along side of the leader only to fall back. Dick Reynolds was just a length back out of contention, watching and waiting for something to happen to the leaders but that even never happened and Buskirk brought home the win, followed by Rinard, Reynolds, Nate Jones, Chaney Newland, Jeff Reist, Derrick Dennis, Greg Mandoka, Jeff Loomis, and Ryan Kent. Newland powered his way to win the semi-feature while Buskirk, Todd Bush, and Terry LaClear brought home heat gold.

Next week at Crystal Motor Speedway, the Michigan Legends make their first appearance. The Late Models have the night off. Gates open at 4:30 and racing starts at 7:30. Adult admission to the grandstands is $10 and kids 5-11 are $4. Pit passes are $25.
