UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour Headlines Biggest Single Day Event in Michigan at I-96Speedway
Lake Odessa, Michigan (Wednesday, June 15th, 2011): The Biggest Single Day Event in the state of Michigan is on Sunday, June 26th at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan. The UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour Race #10 for UMP Late Models and the DIRTcar Summit Racing Equipment Modified Nationals Race #10 for UMP Modifieds will be on the same card on the same day!
They'll be joined by the track's Jim's Auto Body of Portland UMP Sport Compacts for an action packed day of Racing on a special Sunday. During the Sunday extravaganza, all three divisions will race on the 3/8s (0.375) mile semi-banked dirt oval that is utilized for the Weekly Divisions within the UMP DIRTcar Racing Series throughout the 2011 racing season.
The UMP Late Models will going for a cool $5,000 to the winner of their 40-lap Feature while the UMP Modifieds will run for a $1,000 to win payday in their 30-lap Feature. The UMP Sport Compacts will run a regular 20-lap Feature paying normal pay of $125 to Win and $25 to start. An expected field of well over 100 cars total from all across the United States and Canada will jam the pits for the special Sunday extravaganza.
The Pit Gates will open at "High Noon" 12:00p.m. Grandstands Open at 2:00p.m. Practice starts at 4:00p.m., and will include UMP Late Models Qualifying, (NOTE: UMP Modifieds and UMP Sport Compacts will DRAW for their Qualifier Heat Race Starting Positions) Racing STARTS at 6:00p.m.
Ticket Prices for Sunday, June 26th are on sale at the track; Reserved Seating $25.00 in Advance - General Admission $20.00 in Advance - Children (6-12) $10.00 - Kids (5 and Under) FREE. On Race Day Grandstand Prices will go up $5.00 except for Children (6-12) which stays at $10.00 and Kids (5 and Under) which will remain Free. On Race Day, Ticket Prices are; Reserved Seating $30.00 - General Admission $25.00 - Children (6-12) $10.00 - Kids (5 and Under) FREE.
Pit Passes will be $35.00 for UMP Late Models Teams, UMP Modifieds Teams, and the General Public. For the UMP Sport Compact Teams, the driver and two crew members will be able to Purchase Pit Passes for $25.00 and all three team members must be present at the time of arrival.
"There's going to be teams here from all over the country for this race in Late Models and Modifieds, and even in the Sport Compacts," Co-Owner / Promoter, Mike Mouch said. "What a great way to spend a Sunday then to come out to the track early, or even the day before, we'll be here; Tailgate one or both days, and watch some of the best racing you'll see all year with some of the best drivers in the country!" He added.
The UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour for UMP Late Models is now in its 24th year. The race in Lake Odessa, Michigan will be night #10 of the marathon 25 races in 32 days and is the ONLY event scheduled in Michigan during the 2011 edition of the Hell Tour! A whopping $25,000 will be going to the winner of the entire series. Over 300 drivers are expected to compete selectively throughout the 25-race 2011 UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour.
In the tours' 2010 visit to I-96, 45 teams made the trip to the farthest northern destination for the tour with Pinconning, Michigan's Jeep VanWormer winning over Devin Shiels, Brian Ruhlman, Ryan Unzicker, and Zack Olger as four of the top five finishers were from Michigan. Jason Feger won the 2010 UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour Series Championship over Dennis Erb Jr., while Shannon Babb, VanWormer, and Unzicker were the final Top Five in the series points standings.
This season's expected entries are staggering to say the least and are led by Defending UMP Summer Nationals Hell Tour Champion Jason Feger of Bloomington, Illinois. His prime rivals for the Summer Nationals title figure to once again be former series champs Dennis Erb Jr., of Carpentersville, Illinois and Moweaqua, Illinois' ace, Shannon Babb, but there's a host of other drivers jockeying for position in the spotlight.
Current UMP DIRTcar National Points Leader Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Illinois is among the stellar crop of drivers planning to follow the entire "Hell Tour" along with up-and-coming teenager Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Illinois. More stout entries declaring their intentions on running the entire tour includes; Jack Sullivan of Greenbrier, Arkansas; Scott James of Greendale, Indiana; Randy Korte of Highland, Illinois; Matt Miller of Waterville, Ohio; Jim Moon of Zionsville, Indiana; Billy Moyer Jr. of Batesville, Arkansas; Brian Shirley of Chatham, Illinois; and Donny Walden of Towanda, Illinois.

MARNE -- Three-time defending Berlin Raceway Late Model champion Ross Meeuwsen gave up his ride Saturday night and headed to California to visit his son, whose wife had a baby.
Meeuwsen, of Zeeland, sure knows how to pick a replacement.
Alec Carll of Grand Rapids hopped into Meeuwsen’s No. 32 white Late Model and dominated the second half of the 60-lap Late Model feature. It was the first career Late Model win for Carll.
Carll, 21, drove around Ray Clay for the lead on lap 34 and went on to post a 2.009-second win against fast qualifier Terry Senneker in a race that went caution free.
“It feels awesome,” Carll said. “Ray was pretty good, and I knew I couldn’t go to the bottom because he was holding his line there. I had to go up high, and luckily, it handled better up high. I have to thank by dad and brother for helping me out a lot, because this thing ran perfect.”
The fact that Meeuwsen missed a race won’t hurt his chances at a fourth consecutive title. Drivers are permitted to throw out one race. Meeuwsen entered Saturday’s race sixth in points, 26 behind Senneker.
Andrew Nylaan of Hudsonville won the 30-lap Super Stock feature for his first victory of the season. Nylaan, who started third in the feature, didn’t hesitate when he got his first crack at the lead.
Nylaan was running second when the race’s only caution fell on lap 10, and that enabled him to line up inside of rookie leader Josh Hobson on the double-file restart. Nylaan overtook Hobson when the race went green, and he drove away for a 3.140 second victory over Hobson. Brian Wiersma finished third, followed by Justin Ryan.
“The cars really don’t like it when it’s hot out here like this,” Nylaan said. “The track gets really slippery, and I haven’t had any luck in the heat. I’m really happy to get one when it is really hot out.
“We made a lot of adjustments on the car, and obviously, they were for the good. Hopefully, the car will stay the same next week, and it will help me get back into contention for the points.”
Four-time defending Pro Stock champion Brian Tillema of Dorr earned his second win of the season, capturing top honors in the 25-lap main. Tillema took the lead on lap 10 and led the rest of the way, but it wasn’t easy. Two cautions fell during the final three laps, but Tillema was able to stave off Weston Jewett.
Tillema missed last week because he got engaged, and he has considered selling his car. In fact, there is a “For Sale” sign on his car.
“Money is kind of tight, and I wanted to get rid of the car and try to get a nice house,” Tillema said. “My fiance was like, ‘What are you talking about? You aren’t selling this car.’ So, we might be stuck with it for awhile.”

Lake Odessa, Michigan (Saturday, June 4th, 2011): It was Rudd's Septic Service Night at the Races on Saturday, June 4th as it was Day II of the First Weekend in June Celebration at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Michigan. The cars and stars of the four weekly divisions within the United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) DIRTcar Racing Series were back in action and all together again for the first time in almost a month.
A stellar field of teams were on the grounds and an enthusiastic crowd was on hand as well taking in the action as the Lane Automotive UMP Modifieds highlighted the evening racing for a $1,000 to win. The premier weekly division at I-96, the Tinney Automotive UMP Late Models was also on the card along-with the Renegade Racing Fuels & Lubricants UMP Street Stocks and Jim's Auto Body of Portland UMP Sport Compacts for a jam packed four in one show on the fast 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked dirt oval.
Current 18 and Over Rookie of the Year Points Leader Mike Vezino and 2010 Springport Motor Speedway Track Champion J.T. Leach led the Jim's Auto body UMP Sport Compacts 20-lap Feature to Chief Starter Tim Beebe's green flag and it would be Vezino beating Leach to the first corner to take the early lead as the rest of the field searched for position on the 3/8s mile.
Current Points Leader Rick Peck and Defending Track Champion Dan Reimersma both got by Leach and set their sights on Vezino as the top three pulled away from the pack. Soon Greg Pinard joined the battle making it a four car dash for the cash. Tim Horvath II made it a five car chase for the lead as Vezino and Reimersma squirted by Vezino to take over the lead on lap 12.
Soon Chuck Peterson II made it a six car battle as he shot to the outside of everybody and briefly took the lead away on lap 18 only to lose it a lap later to Reimersma as they were four-wide coming out of turn four taking the white flag lap. Pinard was on the far outside and coming out of turn two would steal the lead away from Reimersma and the Alto, Michigan driver in his Moe's Coney & Grill Pontiac would fend off Reimersma and a late charging Peck to score his first ever Feature win!
Peck finished ahead of Reimersma in second while Vezino and Horvath II were the top five. Kyle Brigance was sixth with Peterson II in seventh. Two 19-year-olds, Colee Ruesink and Caleb Schuiling were eighth and ninth as Keith Brigance finished off the top 10. Vezino and Pinard scored the heat race wins.
The Tinney Automotive UMP Late Models were up next for their 25-lap feature and it would be Kris Patterson Jr., and Dale Sheehy leading the field to the green. Patterson Jr., driving the car made famous by his legendary father, Michigan Motorsports Hall of Famer and multi-time track champion, Kris Patterson, would lead the first two laps before Zack Olger charged by to grab the lead on lap three.
Olger, who won the feature the previous night up at Mt. Pleasant Speedway was looking to make it two for two on the weekend and started to slowly pull away from the rest of the field. Dona Marcoulier, who started eighth, worked his way up to second and tried in vain to reel in Olger while trying to fight off the advances of multi-time Hartford Motor Speedway track champion, Curt Spaulding who started 11th.
Soon Brandon Thirlby, who came into the night second in the UMP DIRTcar National Points Standings, joined the duo trying to chase down Olger, but slowed on the track on lap 12. He pitted and returned starting at the rear of the field. On the restart, Marcoulier briefly kept pace with Olger but soon Olger was off and running and the St. Johns, Michigan driver in his Mid-States Sales & Service Cadillac would go on to score his first I-96 Speedway Feature of the season and second feature of the weekend.
Marcoulier settled for second with Spaulding third over Thirlby who clawed his way back to finish fourth over Sheehy, who completed the top five. Patterson Jr., finished sixth as Scott Baker, Dave Hartman, Ben Hidy, and Rookie of the Year Points Leader Kathy Jarvis completed the top 10. Olger, Sheehy, and Marcoulier picked up the heat race victories.
The Lane Automotive UMP Modifieds were the highlight of the evening as their extended distance 30-lap feature paid a cool $1,000 to the winner. Jacob Poel and John McClure started on the front row of the stellar field of open-wheeled machines and it would be Poel beating McClure to the first corner to grab the early lead while the rest of the field jockeyed for position behind them.
Poel maintained his advantage while there was action all over behind the early race leader. Zack Olger, who only moments ago won the Tinney Automotive UMP Late Models Feature, climbed behind the wheel of his UMP Modified and from his fifth starting spot would charge up to second place and began reeling in Poel. Soon Current Points Leader at I-96 and UMP DIRTcar Racing Series Michigan Points Leader, Mark Anderson, who won the previous night at Hartford Motor Speedway, also joined in on the battle.
While Olger and Anderson battled, Poel slowly but surely pulled away and after a marathon night of fixing his car due to an accident the night before down at Hartford, the dedication and perseverance paid off for the Spring Lake, Michigan driver as he would lead all 30 laps and pull his Poel's PRO-ACT Welding & Fabrication Chevrolet into victory lane after winning his first feature of the season.
Olger fended off Anderson to finish second for a great night for him. Anderson was third to extend his points leads while McClure and Travis Stemler were the top five. Two-Time Track Champion Todd Feutz was sixth while Tim Stemler, Trevor Sloan, Kyle Roberts, and Jared Guinn were the top 10. Poel and McClure collected the heat race triumphs.
The last race of the night was the 20-lap feature for the Renegade Racing Fuels & Lubricants UMP Street Stocks and it would be Josh Loomis, the feature winner the previous night up at Mt. Pleasant Speedway and Rich Sweet leading the field to the green. Almost immediately after the green flag fell, Current Points Leader and Defending Track Champion Gary Vandermark shot up to second and the battle began!
The battle took a turn when Vandermark slipped underneath the northern invader to grab the lead away as Bill Brandt Jr., joined the duo making it a three-car battle for the lead. Several cautions plagued the event, but each time on each restart, Vandermark set the pace that everyone was following. Loomis never let Vandermark stray too far out in front and kept the reigning track champion within sight.
Try as he might though, Loomis did everything he could overtake Vandermark, but the Lowell, Michigan driver would fend off Loomis and the rest of the field and for the second time in a row, the veteran driver of the Earthworm Dozing & Excavating Chevrolet would pull into the P.A.T. Landscape & Restoration Victory Lane after winning the feature.
Brand Jr., snuck by Loomis to finish second while Jay Chlebek was fourth over 2010 Rookie of the Year Ron Harper who finished off the top five. 2009 Track Champion Aaron Wolf was sixth as Cody Denny, Ron Wiers, Harley Farkle, and Hillary Smith finished off the top 10. Loomis and Sweet were the heat race winners.
I-96 Speedway will take next weekend, Friday-Sunday, June 10-12th OFF to allow the Tinney Automotive UMP Late Models teams to make the trip down to the historic Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio for the Dirt Late Model Dream! In addition, the Lane Automotive UMP Modifieds will take advantage of the weekend off to go race in the second Michigan Dirt Cup Allstar Performance Modifieds Tour Powered by Lane Automotive, Aeroquip, and ARP event at Butler Motor Speedway on Quincy, Michigan.
The off weekend will also allow the Renegade Racing Fuels & Lubricants UMP Street Stocks and Jim's Auto Body UMP Sport Compacts to visit other UMP sanctioned facilities throughout the state of Michigan in an effort to earn valuable UMP DIRTcar Series State, Regional, and National points. Tim Horvath II made it a five car chase for the lead as Vezino and Reimersma squirted by Vezino to take over the lead on lap 12.
Soon Chuck Peterson II made it a six car battle as he shot to the outside of everybody and briefly took the lead away on lap 18 only to lose it a lap later to Reimersma as they were four-wide coming out of turn four taking the white flag lap. Pinard was on the far outside and coming out of turn two would steal the lead away from Reimersma and the Alto, Michigan driver in his Moe's Coney & Grill Pontiac would fend off Reimersma and a late charging Peck to score his first ever Feature win!
Peck finished ahead of Reimersma in second while Vezino and Horvath II were the top five. Kyle Brigance was sixth with Peterson II in seventh. Two 19-year-olds, Colee Ruesink and Caleb Schuiling were eighth and ninth as Keith Brigance finished off the top 10. Vezino and Pinard scored the heat race wins.
The Tinney Automotive UMP Late Models were up next for their 25-lap feature and it would be Kris Patterson Jr., and Dale Sheehy leading the field to the green. Patterson Jr., driving the car made famous by his legendary father, Michigan Motorsports Hall of Famer and multi-time track champion, Kris Patterson, would lead the first two laps before Zack Olger charged by to grab the lead on lap three.
Olger, who won the feature the previous night up at Mt. Pleasant Speedway was looking to make it two for two on the weekend and started to slowly pull away from the rest of the field. Dona Marcoulier, who started eighth, worked his way up to second and tried in vain to reel in Olger while trying to fight off the advances of multi-time Hartford Motor Speedway track champion, Curt Spaulding who started 11th.
Soon Brandon Thirlby, who came into the night second in the UMP DIRTcar National Points Standings, joined the duo trying to chase down Olger, but slowed on the track on lap 12. He pitted and returned starting at the rear of the field. On the restart, Marcoulier briefly kept pace with Olger but soon Olger was off and running and the St. Johns, Michigan driver in his Mid-States Sales & Service Cadillac would go on to score his first I-96 Speedway Feature of the season and second feature of the weekend.
Marcoulier settled for second with Spaulding third over Thirlby who clawed his way back to finish fourth over Sheehy, who completed the top five. Patterson Jr., finished sixth as Scott Baker, Dave Hartman, Ben Hidy, and Rookie of the Year Points Leader Kathy Jarvis completed the top 10. Olger, Sheehy, and Marcoulier picked up the heat race victories.
The Lane Automotive UMP Modifieds were the highlight of the evening as their extended distance 30-lap feature paid a cool $1,000 to the winner. Jacob Poel and John McClure started on the front row of the stellar field of open-wheeled machines and it would be Poel beating McClure to the first corner to grab the early lead while the rest of the field jockeyed for position behind them.
Poel maintained his advantage while there was action all over behind the early race leader. Zack Olger, who only moments ago won the Tinney Automotive UMP Late Models Feature, climbed behind the wheel of his UMP Modified and from his fifth starting spot would charge up to second place and began reeling in Poel. Soon Current Points Leader at I-96 and UMP DIRTcar Racing Series Michigan Points Leader, Mark Anderson, who won the previous night at Hartford Motor Speedway, also joined in on the battle.
While Olger and Anderson battled, Poel slowly but surely pulled away and after a marathon night of fixing his car due to an accident the night before down at Hartford, the dedication and perseverance paid off for the Spring Lake, Michigan driver as he would lead all 30 laps and pull his Poel's PRO-ACT Welding & Fabrication Chevrolet into victory lane after winning his first feature of the season.
Olger fended off Anderson to finish second for a great night for him. Anderson was third to extend his points leads while McClure and Travis Stemler were the top five. Two-Time Track Champion Todd Feutz was sixth while Tim Stemler, Trevor Sloan, Kyle Roberts, and Jared Guinn were the top 10. Poel and McClure collected the heat race triumphs.
The last race of the night was the 20-lap feature for the Renegade Racing Fuels & Lubricants UMP Street Stocks and it would be Josh Loomis, the feature winner the previous night up at Mt. Pleasant Speedway and Rich Sweet leading the field to the green. Almost immediately after the green flag fell, Current Points Leader and Defending Track Champion Gary Vandermark shot up to second and the battle began!
The battle took a turn when Vandermark slipped underneath the northern invader to grab the lead away as Bill Brandt Jr., joined the duo making it a three-car battle for the lead. Several cautions plagued the event, but each time on each restart, Vandermark set the pace that everyone was following. Loomis never let Vandermark stray too far out in front and kept the reigning track champion within sight.
Try as he might though, Loomis did everything he could overtake Vandermark, but the Lowell, Michigan driver would fend off Loomis and the rest of the field and for the second time in a row, the veteran driver of the Earthworm Dozing & Excavating Chevrolet would pull into the P.A.T. Landscape & Restoration Victory Lane after winning the feature.
Brand Jr., snuck by Loomis to finish second while Jay Chlebek was fourth over 2010 Rookie of the Year Ron Harper who finished off the top five. 2009 Track Champion Aaron Wolf was sixth as Cody Denny, Ron Wiers, Harley Farkle, and Hillary Smith finished off the top 10. Loomis and Sweet were the heat race winners.
I-96 Speedway will take next weekend, Friday-Sunday, June 10-12th OFF to allow the Tinney Automotive UMP Late Models teams to make the trip down to the historic Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio for the Dirt Late Model Dream! In addition, the Lane Automotive UMP Modifieds will take advantage of the weekend off to go race in the second Michigan Dirt Cup Allstar Performance Modifieds Tour Powered by Lane Automotive, Aeroquip, and ARP event at Butler Motor Speedway on Quincy, Michigan.
The off weekend will also allow the Renegade Racing Fuels & Lubricants UMP Street Stocks and Jim's Auto Body UMP Sport Compacts to visit other UMP sanctioned facilities throughout the state of Michigan in an effort to earn valuable UMP DIRTcar Series State, Regional, and National points. Racing returns to Lake Odessa, Michigan on Saturday, June 18th as Renegade Racing Fuels & Lubricants Presents the first of three appearances by the Grand Rapids, Michigan based Engine Pro ASCS Sprints On Dirt Presented by ARP at I-96 Speedway in 2011 as the high flying, winged warriors will take on the fast 3/8s (0.375) mile high-banked dirt oval.
Come out and see all the stars of the Engine Pro ASCS Sprints on Dirt Presented by ARP like former two-time series champion from near-by Portland, Michigan; Dustin Daggett, who just finished 8th in the World Of Outlaws Sprints Series race, "The Rumble in Michigan" at I-96 back on Memorial Day Monday, May 30th, which was won by Jason Sides.
Defending Series Champion Ryan Grubaugh from near-by St. Johns, Michigan will also be in action as well as another former two-time series champion and former three-time I-96 Speedway Track Champion, Brett Mann. Plus former series champion, Ken Mackey, former I-96 champion, Robert Huisken, and other stars like Joe Bares, Gregg Dalman, Shawn Dancer, Jared Horstman, Ryan Ruhl, Trey Smith, and many more will all invade Lake Odessa, Michigan.
Also on the card and helping celebrate Fathers Day Weekend will be the Lane Automotive UMP Modifieds ($500 to win - $125 to start - $25 tow money), Renegade Racing Fuels & Lubricants UMP Street Stocks ($300 to win - $100 to start - $25 tow money) and Jim's Auto Body of Portland UMP Sport Compacts ($125 to win - $25 to start - $25 tow money) as all three divisions within the UMP DIRTcar Racing Series will also challenge the 3/8s mile.
